Meet Eli Craig: Director of Hilarious Horror Films

Eli Craig is a screenwriter and film director and the son of actress Sally Field known for her roles in Forrest Gump and Mrs. Doubtfire. Craig is best known for writing and directing the 2010 horror comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Audience Award. He went on to produce another horror comedy, Little Evil, which was released on Netflix. However, he hasn't done much since then.

Clark Collins of Entertainment Weekly online praises Craig's accomplishment given the difficulty of the genre. He writes “Like a fat man lying down on a wide wall, the horror-comedy is a notoriously difficult thing to pull off. But that didn’t stop debut director Eli Craig making Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, a humorous twist on the crazed hillbilly genre" (Collins). 

In an interview with Deadly Talks, Craig explained how he and his film school classmate, Morgan Jurgenson, came up with the idea for Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. They co-wrote the script intending to flip the typical horror genre tropes. Rather than having the usual scenario of college kids being attacked by hillbillies, they reversed the roles by having the college kids attack the hillbillies (“Eli Craig, Tyler.” 00:01:00 - 00:01:13). Craig shared that his idea drew from personal experiences, stating that he "has a thing against frat kids, as he never got along with them and always preferred the backwoods guys” (“Eli Craig, Tyler.” 00:00:40 - 00:01:00).

In a review of Little Evil by Kieran Fisher, he mentions that it is difficult to discuss director Eli Craig without referencing his debut film, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Fisher describes it as “a bona fide cult classic among viewers who lean towards the bloodier side of comedy, and one which hilariously subverts the tropes and stereotypes we associate with the backwoods hillbilly subgenre.” While Tucker and Dale vs. Evil had the potential to take Craig to mainstream success, he has been relatively quiet since its release in 2010 (Fisher).

Eli Craig's second feature film - Little Evil

Seven years after his first feature film Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Craig directed his second feature film, Little Evil, which was expected to mark his comeback but fell short (Fisher). Fisher states that Little Evil is “a reasonably entertaining comedy that continues to demonstrate his mushy sensibilities. It’s just a shame that Little Evil sticks to a familiar formula throughout and never manages to sustain a consistent level of quality comedy.”

In another review by Keith Garlington, it's noted that Tucker and Dale vs. Evil isn’t for everyone. The blood and gore are excessive but play an essential role in the parody (Garlington). The film stumbles towards the end with a showdown at an old lumber mill that, despite being a pivotal moment, feels anticlimactic and overly conventional compared to the rest of the film (Garlington). "It was soaked in parody but still felt a little too conventional, something that can’t be said about most of this film. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil isn’t a movie you can pigeonhole, and that’s a really strong point. It’s bloody and hilarious, and you may find yourself grimacing and laughing at the same scene. It’s truly that funny" (Garlington). 

Tucker to the Rescue: Alison Saved from the Evil Frat Boys

In my opinion, Eli Craig is a filmmaker who's good at mixing horror and comedy in unexpected ways. He made a big splash with his first movie, "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil," which turned a typical horror movie upside down. Craig's unique style comes from his personal experiences and his desire to do something different in horror films. While his first movie was a hit with fans, Craig has had a hard time keeping that momentum going. He took a long break before making his second film, "Little Evil," which didn't quite live up to expectations. This shows how tough it can be to stay successful in Hollywood, even after a great start. Craig's work stands out because he likes to surprise audiences by changing the usual horror story rules. But he's only made a couple of movies so far, so it's hard to say what his long-term impact will be but I look forward to see what he does next!.

The Public Interest Internet

I met Danny O'Brien on 9/11/01, at a surreal dinner we pressed on with despite (or really, because of) the intense terror of the day. He was wearing a t-shirt from NTK, his seminal digital newsletter, bearing its slogan: "THEY STOLE OUR REVOLUTION. NOW WE'RE STEALING IT BACK"

Online culture has its roots in a strange swirl of hobbyists, the military, corporate misfits fooling around with their employers' vast computer labs and students and academics dabbling in the early digital world.

It was no garden of Eden. There was plenty of fighting and plenty of difference, but there was, despite it all, a sense of mission: a collegial urgency to build a commons that would be part of the digital world that everyone could use.

Right from the start, there was a sense that this commons was wonderful and fragile, facing a remorseless enclosure movement that would turn all our collective work into someone's private, rent-generating preserve.

It's been 20 years since I met Danny, and the enclosure is well underway. Danny - who's been warning us about stolen revolutions and fighting to steal them back since last century - has now embarked on a wonderful series of essays for EFF on the subject.

These essays are grouped under the banner of the "Public Interest Internet," EFF's equivalent to Ethan Zuckerman's "digital public infrastructure" Hana Schank's "public interest technology," the EU's "public stack" and Eli Pariser's "New Public."

Despite decades of sustained assault, the Public Interest Internet is still with us and still vital, from the Internet Archive to Wikipedia to Creative Commons to the vast array of FLOSS projects. Any effort to rein in Big Tech must not destroy these vital commons.

Danny: "When Big Tech is long gone, a better future will come from the seed of this public interest internet: seeds that are being planted now, and which need everyone to nurture them."

Danny's published two case studies so far. The first, "The Enclosure of the Public Interest Internet," recounts how early film enthusiasts migrated from Usenet's rec.arts.movies to the volunteer-maintained and hosted Cardiff Movie Database.

You probably haven't heard of the Cardiff Movie Database, but you've certainly heard of IMDB, the Amazon-owned system it turned out, privatizing the hard work of public-spirited volunteers and turning it into the exclusive preserve of a digital monopolist.

IMDB shows us how volunteers' passion projects can turn into someone else's private concern, but as Danny writes, this isn't inevitable. From Wikimedia to Openstreetmap, public interest projects have shown how to resist enclosure

The next installment i, "Outliving Outrage on the Public Interest Internet: the CDDB Story." The first great volunteer music metadata database became the private property of Nielsen.

A/N: fully intended this to be shameless smut, but alas, the plot took over. smut will be in the next part ;)

Part 1

Summary: A storm forces the reader to stay at Demetri's; unfortunately, he's not the only one after her company.

    “Thanks for letting me stay for dinner,” you gracefully thank Demetri's mom. You had gotten to know her once you started coming over to Demetri's a couple of months ago to “study” and it was clear she liked you, always inviting you to stay for dinner and urging you to come visit more often. “I should be getting home.”

    “In this weather?” she peered out the dining room window; it had begun to hail. It had begun raining earlier that day but you couldn't be bothered by it, much too busy with Demetri to even consider the weather outside or how you were to navigate home in it. “Certainly not. Call your mother, tell her you're staying here for the night. She'll understand, no parent would want their child driving on that ice. You can stay in Demetri's room and Demetri can take the couch.”

You gave Demetri a passing look so quick it almost didn't happen; you didn't want to show his mom just how eager you were to stay. “Okay,” you agreed. “Yeah, I'll go call her real quick.”

You took to the privacy of Demetri's room to notify your mum about your plans, to which she agreed, not willing to let you risk the dangerous ride home.

    “So?” Demetri asks as her enters his room a few minutes after you did, shutting the door behind himself. You grinned, pleased.

    “All clear.” you wrap your arms around Demetri's neck, pulling him down for a passionate kiss. You shiver in to him, enjoying the way his hands glide down to the small of your back, holding you close. After a minute he pulls away, clearing his throat.

    “This is... really great, but I actually came to fetch you. My mom wondered if we want to see a movie all together, and... You know my mom. It's not much of a question.”

You grinned cheekily, assuming this was her way of keeping tabs on you both. “Sure,” you agreed. “I'd love that.”

    It's nearly an hour in to the movie when Hawk starts blowing up your phone. The living room's lights were off, supposed to immerse you further in to the movie you were watching, but inevitably emphasizing the brightness of your phone screen to an unignorable point.

You picked up your phone when it began to ring. Seeing it was just Hawk, you silenced the call and put your phone back down on the coffee table, assuming that would be it. You didn't notice Demetri's eyes darting to your phone when you had picked it up before, you leaning a little further in to him as you leaned your back back on to the sofa.

It was two minutes later that your phone lit up again with Hawk's name, your ringtone blaring. “Sorry,” you apologized to no one in particular, silencing the call one more, this time putting your phone on mute and leaving it by your side so you could monitor it quicker.

Demetri tensed by your side, agitation creeping up in him. He knew you were friendly with the Cobra Kai's, but he didn't know to what extent your friendship with Eli went. He bit his plump bottom lip, trying and failing not to think about what might be going on between you two. Eli already had everything Demetri wanted; friends, confidence, courage. He didn't know what he'd do if he'd get you too.

Your phone keeps lighting up until the movie is finished, texts from your friends coloring the screen.

    (20:45) Hawk👊: Where the fuck are you? Pick up.

   (20:52) Hawk👊: We're all going to Aisha's to hang until the storm's over.

                              Send me your location, I'll come pick you up.

    (21:07) Aisha💕: Whats up? Hawk said you aren't answering him.

                                Come overrrrrrr!

    (21:15) Hawk👊: Y/N!

    (21:23) Tory: Wya?

   (21:35) Aisha💕: For the love of God, please answer Hawk

                            He's driving us all mad

The final text came as credits started rolling, much to your relief. You took your phone in your hands to answer when Demetri's mom rose, stretching her arms up high with a yawn. “Well, I'm calling it a night. I expect you two to do the same soon, yes?” You both agreed – and with that, She left.

You typed a reply.

   To: Hawk 👊

   (22:03)     You're drunk. Don't come over. I'll talk to you Monday :)

Demetri looked away, trying to decide what he was to do. He couldn't help overseeing your texts, you were right beside him after all; and if he was to be completely honest, his insecurity was rising beyond levels he was comfortable with. It was one thing swaying you away from your fantasies about Sensei Lawrence; that was schoolgirl wishful thinking, at best. But Hawk? Hawk was readily available, practically in your hands already.

And you – you were going to “talk to him on Monday”. What about? Demetri's anxiety pestered him. Would you rather be with Hawk right now, only with him because you were stuck there?

    As if to solidify the thought, Hawk called you once more right after he read your text – and this time, you answered.

    “Hey.” Demetri grew restless in his seat, seeing you smile to yourself as you heard the other boys voice. “No, no, no... No, I'm serious!” despite your words, you chuckled. Demetri felt sick. “You're obviously drunk. I can hear it in your voice! Don't worry about me. Just stay at Aisha's. Promise?” you cooed at Hawk through the phone, as though he were a child. “Okay. Yeah. I'll text you tomorrow. Give Aisha a kiss from me.” You roared laughing at something Hawk said. Demetri rose, not finding the comfort to be able to stay still any longer. “Have fun... Bye.” with that, you hung up the call, a smile still gracing your features.

    “You guys are really close, huh?” Demetri asked, halting his pacing.

    “Um, I wouldn't say close. Friends, I guess.”

    “You -” Demetri stopped himself, reconsidering his words. “He obviously wants you.”

    “Um -” you began, disbelief on your face. “I – don't think so. Besides, what's that even matter? I'm here with you.”

With a grin, you reach out to pull Demetri to you, looking up at him. His brow was still furrowed with concern; you wanted to kiss it all away. How could he still not tell how you felt about him, only him?

    “Is this even where you want to be?”

Your smile widens before you plant a gentle kiss on Demetri's hipbone. “No where else.”

With that, you rise to stand too. “So, are you gonna offer me pajamas or do you expect me to sleep in a skirt?”

Demetri's eyes widened, at what thought exactly you weren't sure. “Uhh - Of course. You can choose out anything you want from my closet, I'll wait here. Let me know if you need help finding anything.”

    “Okay,” you agree cheerfully and turn on your heel to his room, amused by the privacy Demetri was granting you so gentlemanly-like, as though he hadn't experienced much more of you just hours prior.

You closed the door after yourself, leaving you all alone in Demetri's room for the very first time. You trailed a finger along his desk until you reached his closet, ready to dig through until you'd find his comfiest-looking hoodie. But then, seeing one of your favorite t-shirts of his, a different idea came to mind.

Rummaging through piles of neatly folded clothes to get it, your hand scratched itself on something when you retracted it, shirt in hand.

Curiosity spiked, you burrowed through the piles to find a golden line of condoms hidden.

    It would seem as though Demetri remembered what he was hiding too, as a sudden knock on the door startled you, prompting you to hide the condoms where you found them.

    “Y/n?” Demetri's voice called from the other side of the door, loud enough for you to hear but hushed enough to not wake his mom up. “Are you – um – finding everything alright?”

You giggled to yourself, the nervous undertone to Demetri's words obvious; he wanted to know if you found what you had without asking directly.

    “Yeah,” you gleefully replied. “Give me a minute.”

Quickly stripping off all of your clothes, you toss on a green shirt adorned with a large pai sign splayed on its front. The hem of the shirt reached the middle of your thighs, with Demetri being so much taller than you. You took a deep breath, stepping to stand in front of the bed before calling, “You can come in now.”

Tentatively, Demetri opened the door. His eyes couldn't help but rake over your body, from your bare legs all the way up to his t-shirt. He swallowed hard, trying to burn the image of you in to his mind.

He suddenly noticed the pile of clothes you left on the floor; notedly, the pair of panties peeking beneath your discarded skirt.

    “You’re n-not, um, w-wearing anything under that, are you..?” Demetri asked, his big blue-green eyes widening in awe.

    You smile michevously. “No.”

Finally got a chance to watch CNN’s Apollo 11: Quarantine and wow is it good!! One big thing I had forgotten (I was 5!) was the bio-hazard suits they to put on. @kaiyves and any other Capsule Heads out there, well worth your time.

Everyone says they’re lucky to have met their partner, and that’s undoubtedly true for me. As for me? The number of things that had to fall into place, even in some cases, not wanting to do something (I didn’t want to move to Splash, and there’s no way we would have met otherwise), are just staggering to me.

We were introduced to Willie by our friends at Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue. It seems that he had "nipped" at someone and his former owner was told that he was  "too aggressive and should be put down". Thankfully they chose a different path and turned him over to EGRR. It's true that in the beginning he was just a tad aggressive, but never dangerously so, and our best guess is that he was the Alpha in his old pack, but he quickly learned his place in our pack he was just fine. Once he figured out that, he was all bark till we told him it was okay and then he'd try to bring you a toy.

Will was never much on the whole Golden Retrieving thing, but he was outstanding at being a Golden Carrier. Water bottles, branches, and after we moved down here the occasional palm frond, if it could fit in his mouth he'd want to carry it (one of our neighbors used to leave out a stick for him with a note that it was Willie's stick and no one else's). Will became a fixture at 5k runs in the Seattle area, always carrying the event t-shirt or a bandana around the start line and out on the course, I seriously have no idea how many people have pictures of Will on their phones but we were always being asked by other if they could take a photo.

In October of 2017 he made the migration to San Diego with us and instantly became a San Diego Dog. The Lovely & Talented worked from home full time which meant he had the run of the place, and with the nice weather he found places to sun himself as well as places keep cool when the occasion called for it.

We had to say goodbye to him today, but as with Eli, Ollie, and Toby, he'll be in our hearts forever. Fair winds and following seas Willie the Wonderdog, you will be missed.
