In general I think the people who bitch loudest about Bombadil being cut from every single abridged adaptation of LOTR haven't given any real thought to how they themselves would go about pruning down that unwieldy beast of a novel while preserving that particular side quest.

HOWEVER,

I am now madly obsessed with the idea of Matt Berry playing Tom Bombadil. This casting has put me in a 180° from thinking no production could do the character justice to knowing in my bones that the perfect actor is out there and would probably jump at the part.

#if you keep bombadil you pretty much have to include the whole misadventure through the old forest as well as the barrow-downs #arguably omitting the barrow-downs is worse than omitting the stay at bombadil's house #that moment is right up there with weathertop and shelob's lair in terms of the quest almost failing #and it happens before they even get to bree (!) so it's a huge moment for character development #the brush with the black rider is the first “shit is real now” moment #but none of the hobbits fully comprehended how dangerous that moment was until later
