once again — nineteen: confession
riki exited his last class of the day with his heart rate gradually increasing. he made his way to the school gates where you two had agreed to meet. with every step he took he felt himself grow more nervous.
this is it, this is the day i confess. he thought to himself, not knowing you were planning the same.
a smile grew on his face as he saw your figure from afar. "y/n!" he said, picking up his pace to meet with you quickly
you turned around, seeing the boy you had been waiting for. smiling from ear to ear, you reached your hand out to grab his but stopped yourself. both looking down at your hands that were almost interlocked, riki took the initiative. intertwining his hand in yours, he spoke, "the picnic basket i prepared is at my house, so we can stop there before going to the park."
you nodded, your cheeks starting to turn pink at the thought of having a picnic with your crush, and the fact you were holding hands with him right now.
the two of you started walking in the direction of riki's house. hands still intertwined as you walked down the street in silence. hearts racing and cheeks blushing as you looked away from each other. the scene unfolding looked straight out of a shoujo anime.
if any of your friends had seen this, they probably would have have wanted to throw up.
finally arriving at his house, you could hear his small dog barking from the second story window. you had been to his house many times before, even recently when you spent the night because your brother said it was better not to come home.
riki let go of your hand to open the front door, revealing the dining room which the tiny picnic basket was placed on. grabbing some sandwiches he made for the two of you out of the refrigerator he placed them in the basket next to many other snacks he carefully picked out.
"ah!" he said, remembering the plushies he had bought you to confess with but never got the chance to. "actually, i have a gift for you. wait right here!" he ran up the stairs to retrieve the gift at a record breaking speed.
"okay, close your eyes," he said from the top of the stairs, walking down with the two plushies behind his back. he waited until he was standing right in front of you to tell you to open them.
you opened your eyes, seeing the plushies you had been wanting forever but never bought. your hands covered your mouth, genuinely surprised at the gift. "oh my god- thank you so much!"
he smiled at your reaction. taking the plushies, you sat them on the table next to the picnic basket before giving riki a big hug. "really, thank you."
"it's not problem," he patted your back before you let go, "i knew how much you wanted them."
you took some more time to adore the gifts before riki grabbed the picnic basket. "are you ready to go?" he asked and you nodded.
exiting his house, you headed to the park he's been meaning to take you to. it was a very pretty park that was close to both of your houses and school. there were many trees surrounding a grassy area perfect for an afternoon picnic.
after laying down the pink checkered blanket riki borrowed from his mom, you began to put down the snacks and sandwiches he prepared.
it was a perfect afternoon, sitting on a picnic blanket in the middle of a park with the boy you were absolutely in love with.
you both started to eat your sandwiches, enjoying each other's company. it was a comfortable silence, that you knew would end soon because you were planning to confess.
your calm exterior slowly collapsing, and now your heart was practically racing.
you finished the sandwich, riki following after. he too had noticed how you seemed more on edge, making him nervous. at this time he didn't even know if you liked him back, and that terrified him.
the way he could be ruining his relationship with you by confessing absolutely terrified him.
you cleared your throat before speaking up, "i need to tell you something."
that sentence definitely had his heart racing, hoping maybe somehow you felt the same way and would be confessing to him right now.
he looked at you, prepared for whatever you had to say. "i- god. i didn't think saying this would be this hard." you took a deep breath, this time looking into riki's eyes before speaking. "i like you."
he swore his heart skipped a beat.
his whole world paused.
he couldn't believe that after years of liking you, that you liked him back.
you waited for him to answer, searching his eyes for any sign that he would say he liked you too.
"well, i think i've liked you for... four? years now," he chuckled.
you hit him playfully on his arm, laughing with him. with the biggest smile on both of your faces, you spoke in unison.
"so..."
"so..."
"you go first," you motioned for riki to speak.
he paused for a moment, thinking about what he was about say. "does this mean, we're dating now?"
you nodded. as soon as you did, he brought you into a hug.
this is the day you've both been waiting for, your first day as a couple.

— you and riki were bestfriends until a year ago when he moved away without a word, now he's back in town and ready to pretend like nothing ever happened.
