Children of BFFH, Entry 91

“Duck!” exclaimed Luce as a wicked-looking axe swung out from the wall at Layla’s head.

The rest of us were dodging as well. Though we had decided to take things slowly, none of us actually took any skills for our characters that involved the discovery and disablement of traps. This latest one appeared in the form of a pressure plate disguised as regular flooring, which triggered those axes from over thirty feet back in the hallway to swing out in quick succession all the way to another twenty feet ahead of us.

“This game is crazy! That almost took off my head!” exclaimed Layla, panting rapidly as if she had just been running.

“Really is different when you’re using your character’s body, isn’t it!?” exclaimed Rona excitedly. She was actually doing fairly well at this, using her magic to block off opponents with wall spells and help destroy large groups quickly.

“It is.” I agreed, not feeling too comfortable with VR myself. I didn’t have much experience with the VR rigs due to largely focusing on Ancient Tribes of Earth when I was allowed. My biggest advantage with my current character was the many hours spent under Momma Cosette’s tutelage last week. We had spent a number of hours covering the basics of sword fighting, moved to more advanced techniques, and then started covering more while shapeshifting. There were reasons I had chosen a samurai-style character, given that Japanese swordsmanship was covered in my lessons and I’d be expected to utilize magic in our upcoming training.

One of the disconcerting sensations while in the VR rig was how slowly my character could react. I still had an advantage in being able to recognize what was happening more quickly than a human, but I didn’t always time my response well to the much slower body.

“Anyone need healing?” questioned Layla, holding her bow at her side. One of her interesting character choices was an ability that allowed her to imbue healing magic into her arrows. The arrow merely needed to hit our armor to heal us, but Rona wasn’t using an armored character this time around. A little healing had been wasted several times as the magic forced the arrow back out of the wound.

“Let’s keep moving.” insisted Luce, leading the way in her tall, steel-clad character. Her character wasn’t really the size of an adult, but she was taller than the rest of us, more likely to take traps to the upper chest than to the head.

When Luce cautiously opened the doorway—standing to the side as she forced it open with her sword—the rest of us prepared to attack, but nothing jumped out at us.

“A bedroom?” questioned Luce, sounding surprised.

The room was covered in dust and cobwebs, but would have been very nice in its time. The canopied bed was large enough for three people to rest comfortably and appeared to be in the best shape of everything here. The door of the armoire looked to have fallen off years ago, the dresser was obviously ruined by the damp seeping in through the stone, and the large mirror had shattered when something had knocked it over.

“Let’s at least look for treasure.” encouraged Rona, grinning as she looked around. “I wish my room was this big. Unlike you people, I live in a normal house.”

“My house is perfectly normal too.” insisted Layla.

“Yeah-yeah. We’re weirdos.” stated Luce teasingly as she cautiously stepped into the room. “Something is off here.”

I pulled my sword in agreement, following close behind her. When a sheet from the bed lurched for her, I met it with a slash from my sword as she stabbed up through it. The whole bed writhed, its form twisting as more sections of the now ooze-like creature shot out at us, taking the forms of different blades.

Luce stepped between the bed-creature and our casters, allowing me to step up closer to our enemy, meeting its attacks with my sword. Rona used some sort of cold magic that shot into the creature in a thin line, but quickly spread, slowing the creature down. Where my sword met the frozen body, that part of the body shattered quite satisfyingly. The fight was over fairly quickly from that point.

“I’m so glad that wasn’t the type of ooze that isn’t affected by cold!” exclaimed Rona happily as we carefully poked around the room.

“There are actually several types immune to cold, and this was a mimic, not an ooze.” stated Luce as she lifted a sheet with her sword.

“But it’s body was oozing.” pointed out Rona as she gave Luce a frown.

Luce shrugged a little, letting the sheet fall. “True, but mimics are typically intelligent where oozes usually aren’t. Furthermore, no one knows what the natural form of a mimic looks like, since they’re always taking on other shapes, even after death. ‘Mimic’ might be a broad category for numerous types of creatures, each with its own preferred shape.” she suggested.

“I’m just glad they can’t mimic people. Fighting a Luce would be terrifying.” stated Rona with an exaggerated shudder.

Layla laughed. “Yeah. I’d just surrender.”

“No! Even in the shape of Luce, a mimic would still want to eat us.” I insisted, becoming more and more certain that Luce actually could bite through someone. She was very strong and equally durable.

Luce lifted the front of her helmet, giving each of us a frown. Then she said, “Gross. No offense, but I doubt any of you taste good. Mimics might lack taste buds to find any of us palatable.”

I made a noise as if I was clearing my throat. “Vampire in the room. I would suggest that their taste buds are perfectly fine for a mimic, but when eating a person, send signals to their brain similar to what yours do when you’re eating something you enjoy, like ice cream.”

“Do vampires like ice cream?” questioned Layla, seeming genuinely curious.

“The good ones do!” I insisted, feeling a lack of ice cream was certainly a failing of my old life.

“Woo! Jackpot!” exclaimed Rona excitedly. When she had tried opening the lower left drawer of the ruined dresser, the side fell off, which I had taken for a sign of decay. Instead, there was a hidden compartment filled with jewelry.

“But what do we even do with jewels and such? Is there a vendor in the dungeon?” asked Layla, who couldn’t be too against the find with how she lifted one of the necklaces up and smiled appreciatively.

“We’ll divide up the loot before we quit, and then these characters will have money for purchasing better equipment in the loading room, assuming we end up playing them again.” explained Luce.

“Do you think I’d be allowed to come visit fairly often?” asked Layla worriedly as she caressed the necklace she had picked up.

Rona laughed and said, “They let me come back often, and I’m not even a relation.”

Luce nodded in agreement. “You’re our friend, so you’re stuck with us now.”

I smiled and impulsively hugged Luce. She smirked but still hugged me back. In my old life, I didn’t really have friends. Now, I wasn’t certain what I’d do without them with me.

San Diego is a beautiful coastal town in Southern California with a rich history dating back almost five hundred years. There are so many things do just in and around the Bay, that we are not able to list everything available, merely some of what we believe to be the most essential things to do. So without further ado, let’s dive in the San Diego Bay. Tour the Bay with Sail USA Rated the number one thing to do in San Diego on Trip Advisor, this company owns two world-class sailing boats: the Stars and Stripes USA-11 and the Il Moro De Venezia ITA-16. With a crew comprised of expert sailors, you will tour the Bay at twice the speed of a usual sailboat and get unique views of many of the city’s famous landmarks. A professional photographer and videographer is part of the crew specifically to capture your adventure to treasure in the future. This company also offers special team building excursions where the crew will supervise the customers as they learn the ropes and work together against the challenging ocean currents and winds. Marine Life Spotting Between December and April the California Grey Whales migrate from California to ALask for the birthing season, and they often swim right past San Diego. This is the perfect activity for you if your sailboat tour is cancelled or delayed by bad weather or you enjoy history and interactive exhibits such as flight simulators or watching documentaries and movies about events the USS Midway was involved in. All of the docents are military veterans, a few of whom even served during WWII, and you will find that many of them are more than happy to talk about their experiences working with their comrades in high-stakes situations. Surfing With over seventy miles of coast, San Diego has dozens of places to partake in this thrilling activity. Of particular note is a trail that leads you to the summit of the highest point in San Diego: Cowles Mountain. At four hundred and eighty-six metres, the view of San Diego County is unparalleled from this point, and will give you a true sensation of accomplishment at having conquered the mountain. La Jolla Cove When the Spanish named La Jolla, they were absolutely correct. La Jolla cove is the centrepiece of San Diego’s plentiful beaches and coasts. Now a protected ecological area, the area is rich with shallow water wildlife such as stingrays, eels and dozens of species of fish. A little further down the coast is Children’s Pool, home to a host of sea lions and seals. All together, this makes La Jolla Cove a perfect place for wildlife spotting via snorkelling, diving and hiking. However, we would be remiss if we did not mention the other sporting activities available in the area. Kayaking, surfing, stand up paddle boarding and cycling are very popular in the area, and there are plenty of shops that rent out equipment to visitors. After a day of activities, the village of La Jolla has some of the warmest restaurants in the area for you to enjoy. Coronado Island Repeatedly voted one of America’s best beaches, Coronado Island has gentle surf, impeccable beaches and gorgeous weather all year around. Not only has the historical village and the hotel housed celebrities, but also royalty and some even say that ghosts haunt the area. The Island can be accessed by bay, ferry or even by hiring a private sailboat to take you there. On the island itself you can relax on the spotless beaches, rent bikes to tour the island or partake in even more sporting activities before heading to a sublime restaurant for a delicious dinner. Balboa Park Balboa Park is twelve hundred acres of cultural and botanical attractions ranging from San Diego’s world famous zoo to plenty of art and natural history museums as well as gardens, theatres and restaurants galore. To truly take in the area would take several days, so it is best to do some research and plan a full day of exploring the area. The zoo itself would take a full day to explore, as would the San Diego Air and Space Museum and the Natural History Museum, meaning that a visitor is almost spoilt for choice. Similarly, Balboa Park has dozens of miles of hiking trails, though none as challenging as those in Missions Trails Regional Park, making this a wonderful place for first time hikers. Of special note is a cactus garden so well designed that it truly makes you feel as if you are in the middle of a desert and not one of the largest cities in America. Cabrillo National Monument Found near Point Loma, this national monument is another spectacular piece of San Diego’s natural beauty. This is an excellent spot for hikers or for people who want to go tide pooling in the many caves and hidden nooks and corners. It should be noted that there is no cellphone service at the tidepools, so it is important to arrange drop off and pick up times and follow them as there will be no way to contact others at this location. It is also vital to research tide times as the best time to see the tidepools is two hours before and after the low tide has begun. The best time to visit is in late autumn and winter. Building A Dream Sand Castle The famous sand artist JT Estrella offers three-hour lessons for groups of up to seven people (though more can be accommodated if contacted in advance) to learn how to build high quality sand castles involving trips and tricks for carving, forming bridges and towers and other delicate finishing touches. This unique activity offers a special chance to work with others in creating a piece of art with your own bare hands. Requiring lots of attention to detail and cooperation, this one-of-a-kind challenge is a fantastic way of encouraging team building and problem solving.

All in all, San Diego is a fantastic place to go for those who enjoy physical activity or enjoy seeing wildlife in their natural habitats. It is an even better place to build bonds of trust and cooperation between team members due to the variety of diverse and off-the-wall activities offered by this quirky seaside city. If you only have time for one special activity, we absolutely suggest taking advantage of San Diego’s natural harbour and exploring the marine area and life found in this place by taking in a cruise on the bay.

Player Background:

Travelling adventurers

Belong to adventuring guild in a neighbouring kingdom

Not native to Elnea (the location that the adventure will take place in)

Quest details (as detailed on quest board):

Requester: King Harris of Elnea

Description: Slay the dragon residing in a hidden cave in Mount Thohan

Reward:

All salvageable remains of the beast.

All loot hoarded by the beast.

10,000 gold per player

Elnea’s Honor*

*Prestige title. Earning this title will give you unhindered access to the kingdom, as well as the unquestioning protection of the kingdom in times of need.

Locations:

Elnea: A peaceful kingdom, shadowed by the towering peaks of Mount Thohan and its passes in the distance.

Crown city of Elnea: A bustling city where players are allowed to purchase supplies when available.

Mount Thohan: A perilous mountain range, made even more dangerous by the presence of a dragon. It lies just beyond the outskirts of the Gleaming Forest, to the south of the kingdom. (Takes 4-5 days of travel)

Thohan Village: A small village at the foot of the mountain. Life is harsh and unforgiving, as land is scarce and resources are spread thin amongst the villagers. The architecture in the village seems to be teeming with dragon motifs, as in the dragon was held in high regard.

Gleaming Forest: A forest notorious for its Robin Hood-esque bandits, as well as its confusing terrain which leaves even seasoned travellers walking in circles.

Elves Stronghold: The former rulers of the Gleaming Forest, the Elves were forced to retreat to this small, secluded area to escape the wrath of Elnea.

Room One:

Arrival in Elnea.

Townsfolk are friendly and helpful when players ask for directions. Players will make a friend, Kaleem.

Kaleem: A young, aspiring tanner producing high-quality leather hides for the royal guards.

Players will follow Kaleem into the crown city if they help him with his deliveries to the barracks in the main castle. (Takes 2-3 days of travel)

People residing in the city are friendly as well, if not a bit snobbish. The kingdom does not feel like a kingdom under the oppression of a malevolent dragon.

When questioned about the dragon, Kaleem confirms that there is a dragon living in Mount Thohan, as its roars can be heard every fortnight.

Cue dragon roar in the far distance, sounding similarly to a thunderclap.

Kaleem does not remember any dragon attacks on the kingdom for as long as he has lived.

Arrives in court to meet the King.

King Harris: A middle-aged benevolent ruler managing the lands of Elnea, and of his physique as well. It was rare to see a ruler who was not portly.

Informs King Harris about the decision to undertake the quest. The King is strangely ecstatic and enthusiastic at the news, and urges the players to stay at the castle to prepare for their journey to Mount Thohan.

The players are allowed to roam the castle and interview the staff or ministers, or head into the city.

Staff and ministers are snobbish and difficult to approach for information.

When heading into the city, news have broke out that the players are the team who has undertaken the quest. City folk would be uncooperative after hearing the news, and some would try to dissuade the players from the quest, but refusing to tell them of the reason why.

Players are unable to gather any supplies.

Return to the castle.

King Harris, when questioned, would explain about the quest.

Dragon has been in the mountains for centuries, and was rampant in its pillaging.

Elnea has been at constant war with the dragon, until when the King’s son, Prince Cass, a learned mage, went to battle and sacrificed himself to seal the dragon in the mountains.

The seal is ending soon, and the King wishes to destroy the dragon before the kingdom is placed into peril again.

The King seems to be unaware of his people’s disagreement with his plan.

King Harris will then supply the players the supplies they have requested, and send them on their way into the Gleaming Forest.

Room Two:

Monster Encounter

Bandits

3 Rouges + 1 Mage + 1 Cleric

All of them carry some form of dragon insignia.

Players will assume their intention is to steal equipment and money.

In the case that they are successfully defeated, they will flee the area.

Their hideout can be tracked and looted. Upon looting, in additional to gold and equipment, disjointed pieces of information can be found regarding a “mission”.

Guardian Encounter

Cat

In the case of the players being unable to defeat the bandits, the Cat will appear, seemingly from thin air, and intervene the battle by performing a spell from a magic crystal hanging from its neck.

In the case of the bandits being defeated, it will appear in the hideout.

It suggests that the players seek rest and shelter with its friends by heading towards the west.

If players decide not to follow, the DM decides if they continue on to Room Three or arrive at the next area in any case.

Hostile Encounter

Upon entering Elves Stronghold, the players were stopped by hostile elves who were threatening to shoot them where they stand.

Elves

Players will perform a Charisma check.

If successful, they will be able to negotiate with the Elves for safe passage and shelter, by mentioning their allegiance with the Cat.

If the check fails, the players will engage in combat with the Elves. The Cat will intervene as before with the Bandits.

The Cat will appear once more, convincing the Elves that the players are friendly and not natives from Elnea.

The players are allowed to replenish their supplies and converse with the Elves.

If asked about their history and animosity with Elnea, the Elves will reveal that they were forced to retreat to this small section of the Forest after some very aggressive expansion campaigns by the King, when they were originally in control of the entire Forest.

If the players restock on weapons, they will meet and befriend the young apprentice Vamir.

Vamir is a Ranger and is interested in joining the party to join the adventure.

Players will be able to convince him to join their party.

The Elves then lead them out of the Forest, towards Mount Thohan.

Room Three:

At the foot of Mount Thohan, players will arrive at Thohan Village, located at the foot of the mountain.

Locals are hostile and unfriendly, and soon capture the players. Players will perform a Charisma check.

If successful, the players will be able to negotiate for their safety, and the Cat will intervene (again), transforming into Prince Cass. BEGIN TRUTH BRANCH.

If failed or choosing battle, the players will flee the village (no matter if the villagers were defeated or not) and head straight for the next room. BEGIN LIES BRANCH.

[TRUTH BRANCH] The Prince then explains to the players about the truth behind the quest.

The Elves and the dragon was originally living in peace with Elnea.

The Elves were trading and business partners with the citizens of Elnea.

The dragon created mining tunnels in the mountain, enabling Elnea to grow in strength and wealth.

However, King Harris became greedy for dominion over the two parties. He expanded into the Gleaming Forest, and was intent on destroying the Elves if not for the intervention by the skilled warriors from Thohan Village.

The Prince was sent on the quest to kill the dragon, but he discovered the King’s true intentions along the way. He decided to remain in the Village to muster strength and overthrow the King.

Room Four:

[LIES BRANCH]

The players begin their ardous journey up Mount Thohan and into the cave.

The players then engage in battle with the dragon, who was oddly sentient.

Upon defeating the dragon, the players are allowed to loot the dragon’s cave.

It was rather barren, barring the equipment, weapons and gold left behind by previous adventurers.

Further exploration of the mountain reveals several disused mining tunnels, with diamonds and jewels that can be mined.

After making their way down the mountain, the players will need to perform a Stealth Check.

If the check was successful, the players are able to sneak undetected past the village and escape back to Elnea.

If the check failed, the players will engage in battle with the Bandits from the second room, only now they declare themselves as the Warriors of Thohan, seeking revenge for the dragon. The enemies must be defeated before the players are allowed to return to Elnea.

[TRUTH BRANCH]

The Prince leads the players up Mount Thohan via a safe route.

The dragon is friendly, and offers the equipment and gold of the previously fallen adventurers.

If requested, the dragon is also able to lead the players to the mining tunnels to obtain diamonds and jewels.

The players and the Prince will try to convince the dragon to join them in their cause, but the dragon refuses to cause harm to the innocents.

The Prince the joins the player’s party, and returns to Elnea.

Room Five:

[LIES BRANCH]

The King heartily welcomes the players back into Elnea and gives the players their rewards as previously agreed.

The next day, a compulsory conscription of all young, healthy males is ruled (including Kaleem) as the King prepares for war with the Elves and Thohan Village, to expand Elnea.

[TRUTH BRANCH]

The party reunites with Kaleem, whom they will convince to aid their cause.

The party must now sneak past the barracks and the guards in order to assassinate the King. Perform a Stealth check.

If successful, they manage to sneak past the bulk of the guards with Kaleem’s help, silence the guards posted at the King’s chambers and confront the King.

If the check failed, Kaleem dies, and the Prince will be forced to reveal his identity to the royal guards in the barracks. The group will then have to battle the Captain of the Royal Guards in order to progress to the King’s chambers.

The party then battles the King as the boss battle.

After the King has been successfully overthrown, the players gain the rewards as previously agreed with the King, as well as added Charisma, Intelligence and Wisdom.

It was always attended by a number of court officers, by the Grand Marshal, the Grand Chamberlain, and the Reis Effendi. Whenever it was necessary, the Grand Vizier had the power to call a special meeting of the Divan at his own residence, and the Imperial seal is always intrusted to his care, for its use is essential on all documents of state.

Page 26: The murder of all princes of royal blood henceforth became the safeguard of the Ottoman dynasty. The Koran says: "Sedition is worse than slaughter," and brothers of Sultans are ever seditious. On this account all princes are usually kept in strict seclusion in the palace. Since the foundation of the empire by Osman I in 1299 till the reign of Achmet I the throne passed from father to sons. But in 1617 Moustapha succeeded his brother Achmet I, and after his death the Divan convoked a special session in which a custom was established by a fetva, that thereafter the successor of the Sultan should as a rule be the oldest male relative, whether uncle, brother or nephew, and not his eldest son, as in other European countries.

Page 42: The month of Ramazan is followed by Sheker Bairam or Candy Easter, which lasts three days. On that day his Imperial Majesty goes to the Mosque in a court carriage drawn by four magnificent Arabian horses, accompanied by a brilliant retinue of marshals, generals and superior functionaries in full uniform emblazoned with gold embroidery and decoration, and by the Caftan Aghassi or the Grand Master of the Wardrobe, whose duties are in all processions to throw silver coins to the people; there the Sultan is received by the Grand Vizier, the Sheikh-ul-Islam and other dignitaries, and is greeted with three cheers of “Long live the Sultan!” The religious service lasts about an hour, and at its close the Sultan rides on a richly caparisoned white charger to the Dolma Baghtcheh Palace with his suite, where he withdraws to his private apartments to rest. Meanwhile the civil, military and religious dignitaries take their places in the Divan Khaneh or reception room, which is of immense dimensions. This throne room is embellished with great oriental splendor; the walls are decorated with immense mirrors, and from the beautifully ornamented high ceiling hang colossal crystal chandeliers. His Imperial Majesty enters and takes his seat on the throne, and the ceremony begins. The first in rank are their highnesses the Princes Imperial; they are followed by the Grand Vizier, who approaches the throne, bows low to kiss the hem of his imperial garment, which is now discontinued and a scarf attached to the throne is substituted for that purpose; the Sheik-ul-Islam, dressed in his white caftan, and turban of white, crossed in front by a band of gold, comes next and attempts to do the same, but is prevented by the Sultan, as there is but little difference in their religious rank; next come the Chief Justices, the Kadi-al-Askers of Roumeli, Europe, and Anadoli, Asia; the Istambol Kadisi, etc. During this ceremony the imperial band continues to play, the cannons are thundering, after which the people leave the palace.

Page 114: The Imperial Ottoman Divan or Council assembled four times a week, on Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, under the presidency of the Sultan; Friday was observed as a day of prayer, Wednesday and Thursday were days of rest.

Page 169: In October of the same year, 1579, while the Grand Vizier Mehemet Sokolli was presiding at the council, a man disguised as a dervish approached him to present a petition, and, as he did so, stabbed him mortally ; the murderer, a Bosnian, was condemned to death. The Grand Vizier was succeeded by Achmet Pasha, an Albanian who died six months after and was succeeded by Sinan Pasha, an Albanian who disliked the Austrians.

In the Divan he asked their ambassador, Pezzen, who had given authority to the King of Austria to appoint a common clerk as his representative. "My sovereign," he replied, "is as free to appoint a clerk to be his Ambassador as the Sultan is to make a swineherd his Grand Vizier." Sinan Pasha turned to the other pashas and said, "I am paid in a good coin by this giaour."

Page 170: During the reign of Mourad corruption and favoritism prevailed. Every appointment, civil, military or judicial, was bought, as the Sultan was spending large sums on his musicians, the parasites, dwarfs and buffoons with whom he spent the most of his time; he humiliated himself by partaking of a part of the bribes his courtiers received for such appointments. Incompetent men were appointed as generals or officers in the army; this brought insubordination on, and at last, in 1589, the Janissaries, being agitated by the debased coinage they received for their pay, attacked the Seraglio, where the Divan was assembled, and demanded the head of Mohammed Pasha Beylerbey of Roumania, and that of the treasurer, who was entirely innocent. Mourad was obliged to comply with their demands.

Page 179: Safiye, the Valideh Sultan, was an important factor in the imperial court and exercised a strong influence over her weak, impetuous and irascible son Mohammed. The Sultan's advisers were very anxious that he should join his army and command it in person. The Valideh, who feared the loss of her influence over her son, strenuously opposed his departure for the scene of action, and kept him infatuated with the beauties and pleasures of the harem. Public opinion and the announcement of further losses finally aroused the Sultan. He summoned the Mufti, who with rare good sense advised Mohammed by adroitly giving him a poem of Ali Tchelebi to read, which depicted strikingly the victories of the Hungarians, and the consequently pitiable condition of the Ottoman dominions.

This had the desired effect, and Mohammed immediately ordered a three-days' service of prayer at the Ok Meidan. Meanwhile all the Turks, including the historian Saadeddin, his tutor, the Mufti and the Grand Vizier, urged the Sultan to engage personally in the war against the infidels, while the Janissaries added to the pressure upon him by refusing to march in defense of their country without their ruler. This enthusiasm overruled the influence of the Valideh; in her indignation she forgot her Christian birth and the ties of early kindred, and proposed a massacre of the Christians in Constantinople, in which she was seconded by the fanatics in the Divan. Wiser councils finally prevailed, and the banishment of all unmarried Greeks in the capital was the result of the fury of this powerful woman.

Page 200: The change of rulers made no improvement in the condition of affairs in Turkey; after Ibrahim's accession to power matters grew worse. His earlier years had been passed in forced seclusion and in constant dread of the executioner's sword; it was almost a natural sequence, therefore, that the fostered immaturity of youth, combined with the strength and passion of untrained manhood, should form a character weak, voluptuous, selfish, cruel and despotic in the extreme. He was regardless of the welfare of his subjects, amused by his buffoons, and controlled by the beautiful and capricious women in his harem, whose desires were excessive and extravagant, and whose whims, however slight, were instantly gratified. One of the extravagant favors demanded by a lady of the Seraglio was, that Ibrahim bedeck his beard with jewels. He immediately complied with her wish, appearing in public thus adorned. He was exceedingly fond of perfumes and amber; he had also a mania for costly sable furs, and not only wore them, but used them as upholstery covering for sofas and divans, and as carpets.

Page 217: Of course this forced the Divan to open negotiations with the Russians, but Kara Moustapha Pasha opposed this course so emphatically, that he was allowed to take command of a new army thoroughly equipped to regain control of Poland. This expedition was joined by 30,000 Tartars sent by the Khan of the Crimea and the total army then besieged Cehryn, which fell after a long and painful siege (1678).

The return of the Turkish army through the wild fastnesses of the mountains was taken advantage of by the Russians, who attacked them unawares and slaughtered the soldiers and captured the baggage and artillery. Eventually this horrible war came to an end in 1681.

Page 236: A messenger was sent to Charles proposing a safe return to his kingdom, through either Poland or Germany, but Charles in reply threatened to hang him as he did not wish to listen to his propositions. The Sultan thought it advisable to send him a complimentary letter in which, after styling him the most powerful among the kings who worship Jesus, brilliant in majesty, and a lover of honor and glory, he requested him to depart in care of Providence, and promising that he should be accompanied by a noble escort, supplied with money and every other necessity. Charles accepted the 1,200 purses, but was in no haste to depart. The Sultan perceived that only force could compel him to return to his country. A decision of the Divan to force him to leave Turkey was sent to the Pasha of Bender, who at once waited upon the King of Sweden and made him acquainted with it. "Obey your master if you dare!" said Charles " and leave my presence instantly!" Charles proceeded to plan a defense, erecting intrenchments and other works. Shortly after this his camp was surrounded by a large number of Turkish troops.

Page 248: The Sarratch Khaneh or Saddlers' Bazaar is a small quarter by itself adjoining one of the principal streets of Stamboul, the Divan Yol. The rich bestow the greatest possible attention upon the trappings and equipments of the animals they use, and the workmen who produce these objects constitute a special guild. In this bazaar may be seen elaborate saddles covered with leather or stuffs or velvet decorated with ornamental hand-sewing with silver and gold and with selected pearls sewed on to it; some of these valuable saddles are to be seen at the imperial treasury. Saddlebags of all descriptions are also made here. They are of all shapes and sizes, and useful for the long journeys on horseback into Asia, which are often undertaken from Constantinople. In this Bazaar in 1853 by orders of Abdul Medjid a saddle of great value was made of cloth and leather decorated with valuable jewels and sent to Pope Pius IX.; also Hamid I presented a saddle in gold to Empress Catherine II, which was made in the same place. The Sarratch Khaneh was formerly entirely in the hands of the Greeks, but as soon as the Turks learned the art, the Greeks were obliged to quit.

Page 253: During these reverses the Mufti Pirizade Osman Effendi tried to persuade the Sultan at the Divan to massacre all the Christians of the empire. Previous to this proposition he issued a fetva commanding the slaughter of all Moldavians and Wallachians, and their wives and children to be taken in slavery; but as the Mufti found no seconders the project was rejected.

Page 254: Captan Hassan Pasha was a native of Persia, where he was kidnapped when a boy by the Turks, and sold to another person, from whose service he freed himself by the assistance of a Greek. He escaped to Smyrna, thence to Algeria, where he enlisted in the army, promoted for his ability and courage and at last was appointed governor to some province. He became very wealthy, and being suspected by the Divan of Algeria, was obliged to escape in order to save himself and his accumulated wealth. On his way he was captured by a Spanish vessel, and was detained six years in Madrid; he was sent to Naples in exchange for Christian prisoners. From Naples he passed to France, and sailed in a Danish ship for Constantinople. On his arrival there he had a private interview with the Grand Vizier Kaghip Pasha, through whom Hassan obtained an opportunity of appearing before the Padishah Moustapha, who, being convinced of his intelligence and characteristic vigor, appointed him captain of Turkish man-of-war. He afterwards became Admiral, and at last he was promoted to the highest rank of Grand Vizier. He died at the age of seventy years, and it is supposed that he was poisoned.

Page 266: About four hundred and seventy of these Mamelukes, under the command of Saim Bey, wholly unsuspicious of the treacherous design of Mehemet Ali, accepted the invitation. They were received and treated cordially at the Divan (hall of audience) on the 1st of May, 1811, and offered to Mehemet Ali their hearty congratulations. As they were passing at their departure through a narrow defile between high walls, all mounted, with their attendants who usually served on foot, armed and attired in gorgeous robes forming a brilliant procession, they were swept down by Albanian troops with cannon and a hail of bullets from the tops of the walls and in all directions, which threw the unprepared Mamelukes and their horses in a confused mass. Death passed over them like a whirlwind, not sparing one of them. The lifeless body of the brave Saim Bey was dragged by a rope around his neck through various parts of the city. The heads of the principal officers were embalmed and sent to the Sultan at Constantinople. Only one of the Mamelukes, named Emin Bey, escaped this horrible massacre in Cairo. Being detained on business and not able to attend the festival, he arrived there when the Mamelukes were entering the narrow defile. He waited until all passed and would have followed them, but the gates were shut at once and immediately after he heard the reports of the firearms. He surmised the result and at once galloped out of the city. He afterwards with a small party retired to Syria.

Page 280: Mahmoud had been determined for a long time to humiliate and destroy this audacious man, and the opportunity finally presented itself February, 1820. Two men were arrested in the mosque of St. Sophia, in the act of firing upon Ismail Pasha Bey, who, having fled from Ali Pasha, had taken refuge in the imperial court. These two assassins were hired by Ali Pasha, but the attempt failed, and they were compelled to confess the name of their employer. The Sultan issued an order immediately declaring Ali Pasha to be a Fermanli or an outlaw, and all his loyal subjects were commanded to fight the rebel. A series of engagements between the two parties took place, with varying success, and he was able to stop the bribes which Ali had used freely among the members of the Divan, and which were only prolonging the conflict. At last Ali Pasha, after a brave resistance, not being able to defend his capital any longer, took refuge in a castle which he had built on an abrupt peninsula jutting into a lake. He was well fortified there and threatened to blow himself up unless the Sultan's pardon was granted him. At last, Khurshid Pasha, who was in command of the besiegers, succeeded, on the pretense of offered capitulation, in getting Ali Pasha into his power.

Page 284: The commerce of Russia on the Black Sea had to be completely discontinued on account of the blockading of the Bosporus. The ultimatum of the ambassador was not answered, and as a result, on July 18th, Baron Straganoff decided to cease all diplomatic relations whatever with the Reis Effendi. On the 31st of July he sailed for Odessa, having first declared to the Divan that if the Porte did not at once better the situation Russia would give to the Greeks refuge, protection and assistance. The Reis Effendi replied to St. Petersburg, too late, however, and the most atrocious cruelties were committed by the Janissaries and troops from Asia Minor before the foreign ambassadors, particularly Lord Stangford, the British ambassador, could succeed in persuading the Grand Seignior to recall his command to arm all Mussulmans.

Page 299: This defeat enraged the Sultan and the Divan; and on no condition would they make any terms, or accept the Treaty of London, which the foreign Ministers, especially the representative of Russia, urged more peremptorily. In the meantime the Porte seized all of the ships of the Franks in Constantinople, detained them for some time, and stopped all communication with the allied powers till indemnity should be made for the destruction of the fleet. This gross offense caused the departure of the ambassadors; but the Ottoman Government endeavored to induce them to remain and offered complete amnesty to the Greeks, with other insincere promises, but positively refused to recognize their independence; the only reply made by the ambassadors was to leave Constantinople on the 8th of December.

Page 324: Mahmoud abolished the power of a Turkish governor to condemn to death for a simple cause either a Christian or a Turk unless authorized by a legal sentence, pronounced and signed by the Kadi; he also prohibited the confiscation of his property, as heretofore was the custom. Instead of holding himself aloof from the cares of state, Mahmoud always attended the Divan. By thus keeping himself informed in the affairs of the Government, he was able to redress many of the worst of the wrongs connected with the Vacoufs by placing the revenues under the administrations of the state. However, he did not undertake applying this vast resource of wealth to the uses of the Government. The military fiefs, Ziamets and Timars, he handled more boldly. Since they had for some time ceased to serve their purpose, that of furnishing effective military service. Mahmoud attached them to the public domains, and in this manner essentially strengthened the resources of the state, at the same time putting an end to a host of corruptions.

Page 338: Nicholas I. of Russia, after mustering a fleet at Sebastopol and an army of 30,000 men, sent Prince Menschikoff as a special messenger to Constantinople. He demanded the protection of all members of the Greek Church in Turkey and the settlement of the question regarding the Holy Places of Jerusalem in such a manner as to leave the supremacy to the Greeks. On May 5, 1853, Menschikoff, appearing before the full Divan in his top coat and muddy boots, delivered his message with ill-concealed disdain and contempt. At the time Lord Stradford de Radcliff and M. de la Cour, the English and French ambassadors, were absent. On their return, however, they assured the Sultan of their entire support, and the Russian demands were at once refused. Menschikoff delivered an ultimatum that was disregarded, and started for Russia.

Page 342: The Divan by this time perceived the impossibility of properly defending, unaided, the coast of the Black Sea against the Russians, and called for the assistance of the allied powers whose fleet occupied the Bosporus, and these vessels entered the Black Sea January 2, 1854.

Page 376: Except on special occasions the Sultan eats alone. His meals are prepared in his private kitchen. The Aktchi Bashi or chief cook officiates under the ever watchful eye of the Kelardji Bashi, controller of the cellars, one of the most weighty functionaries in Yildiz Palace, for the health, the very life even, of the ruler is at his mercy. When cooked, his meals are served in silver vessels and each one is closely sealed with the red wax bearing the official seal of the Kelardji Bashi. Scores of people from the kitchen follow the meals in procession into the imperial chamber. The Kelardji Bashi breaks the seal before it is given to the Sultan, and often he is requested to taste some particular dish before the Sultan partakes of it; this is done as a precaution against poison, and it is eaten from the dish in which it is served; the Sultan partakes sitting on a divan in a loose robe with the sleeves turned up. The repast is wound up with coffee and a cigarette, formerly the tchibouk, which is made, as previously mentioned, of cherry wood or jasmine. The precious amber piece was encircled with rings of gold, enameled and often enriched with diamonds or rubies. The Sultan's drinking water is brought to the palace in casks under special precautions from a certain spring in the suburbs of Constantinople.

While considering the 2019 auction, he decided to surpass his zirconium Joker by creating an even more extravagant watch. It should be a Joker again, but even more emotive. It seems impossible, because the already incredibly charismatic Joker was taken as the starting point. However, in the imagination of Konstantin Chaykin there an ambitious plan was formed, a new formula for the Joker, which includes the portrait of the watchmaker, the traditions and history of watchmaking art, as well as some pages of the chronicle of his own watch manufacture, Konstantin Chaykin. Especially for the Joker Selfie Only Watch-2019 Piece Unique he decided to develop a new movement, based on the famous precision Caliber 2809 of the Chistopol Watch Factory, known as “Vostok”. The solid technical features of Caliber 2809 are complemented by high-quality design and finish, provided by Konstantin Chaykin manufacture. The newly-developed movement is a great choice to use in haute horlogerie collectable watches. The platina was heavily modified, especially for the installation of a proprietary Joker display module. The barrel bridge, engrenage bridge, escape-wheel cock, pallet cock, balance cock, barrel wheel, index and index spring were newly manufactured. In addition, the movement is endowed with typical signs of high watchmaking art – polished caps of the escape-wheel cock and engrenage bridge, and a newly-designed spring-held pawl of the barrel wheel.
