Ford Madox Brown
French-born British painter Ford Madox Brown was born on this day in 1821. Brown was known for painting moral and historical subjects in a graphic and detailed Pre-Raphaelite style. Though he was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he never became a formal member.
Brown spent the latter years of his career painting the Manchester Murals, a series of twelve paintings based on the history of the city and the ideals of the leaders of Victorian Manchester; Christianity, commerce and the textile industry. These paintings are now located in the Great Hall of Manchester Town Hall.
We have a number of paintings by Brown in our collection, including The Seeds and Fruits of English Poetry, The Stages of Cruelty, and the Nosegay pictured below.
