In-depth Recap
Game 3 of the First Day (Game 3 of the Tournament) - United States vs. Finland - 9:30am
Final Score: United States - 4 / Finland - 1 (USA wins in regulation)
United States Goal Scorers: Abbey Murphy (1), Clara van Wieren (1), Audrey Wethington (1), Rory Guilday (1)
Finnish Goal Scorers: Kiira Yrjanen (1)
Box Score:
1st Period:
UNITED STATES GOAL - Scored by Abbey Murphy, assisted by Haley Winn
FINLAND GOAL - Scored by Kiira Yrjanen, assisted by Sofianna Sundelin and Sanni Rantala
2nd Period:
UNITED STATES GOAL - Scored by Clara van Wieren, assisted by Lacey Eden
UNITED STATES GOAL - Scored by Audrey Wethington, assisted by Kiara Zanon and Maggie Nicholson
3rd Period:
UNITED STATES GOAL - Scored by Rory Guilday, assisted by Lacey Eden
American Player of the Game: Kiara Zanon (1 assist, 1 shot, +1)
Finnish Player of the Game: Kiia Lahtinen (47 saves on 51 shots, 0.921 save %)
Player to Watch Out For: Well I try not to put whoever the player of the game was here (and I won’t!) but it’s impossible to not mention Kiia Lahtinen’s stellar performance. The newly sixteen year old’s performance was definitely a bright spot in an otherwise lackluster game for Team Finland. Other than that, it was clear from past performances alone Abbey Murphy has great potential, and she showed that in this game. She had a goal in this game to go along with her SEVEN shots. She has 12 points in 11 games with the U18 program and is committed to the University of Minnesota next year.
This was a game I got to watch, and what a game too! The USA girls, or “eaglets” as I’ve been affectionately calling them, played phenomenally in this game. 51 shots! Penalties were almost even with Team USA being only slightly better disciplined, taking 3 penalties to Finland’s 4. I can’t say I blame Finland for taking that many penalties, considering just how dominant Team USA was. This game could’ve been 8-1 if it weren’t for Kiia Lahtinen just about standing on her head! The game was rather rough for Tyttöleijonat, but if the offense can get going then, with a goalie like that, I think they could be a huge threat and even compete for the gold medal.

EYOF (Banská Bystrica, Svk): Ray Marinx 5° - Victoria Sibille 7°
(26/29-Jul-2022)
>> 2022 EYOF (live results, ijf.org)
>> link saaie VJF-verslag
In haar 1ste repechage tenslotte verliest Lola tegen Seyma Yildirim (°05; Tur; hier 7°; 1°NK’22 u18/-52kg; 3°EK’21 u18/-48kg)
Victoria Sibille (°04; /-48kg; Inter-Gembloux-Wavre) : 7° (1 own)   vroeger lid van Saint-Denis; sinds 2020 by IGW; nog nooit Belgisch kampioene geweest; wél 5x na mekaar 2° (2018-2022) en 3° 2017; behaalde meerdere podia in Frankrijk op Label-A / Excellence tornooien (2° Harnes’19; 2° Amneville’19; 1° Maubeuge’20; 1° Antwerp Open’20; 1° La Roche-sur-Yon’22); Internationaal onder de radar: nam net als Lola, ook deel aan het EK u18/-44kg en werd er 9° na 2 overwinningen. Ze verliest in 1/4-fin tegen de latere winnares Pauline Cuq (°04; Fra; in 2019 3°EK & 3°WK /-40kg; momenteel reeds 10x ECup medaille, waarvan 8x Goud); en Victoria verliest daar ook in haar 1ste repechage tegen Farida Mirzayeva (°??; Aze; daar 7°).
Hier op dit EYOF vecht ze haar 1ste kamp tegen de lokale Martina Sekova (°??; Svk): winst met ippon na 1′44″min; in 1/4-fin echter ippon verlies tegen Konul Aliyeva (°04; Aze; hier 2°; 3x zilver momenteel op een ECup u21/-48kg); en in haar 1ste repechage verliest Victoria eveneens tegen Helen Habib (°05; Ger; hier 3°; 2-voudig Duits kampioene u18/-44kg en 3°EK’21 u18/-44kg);

Two medals for SA at canoeing World Marathon Champs
Team South Africa celebrated a double medal haul at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships on the Cavada River at Vila de Prado in Portugal, as Nick Notten and the junior K2 crew of Hamish Mackenzie and Dave Evans raced onto the podium in their respective races.
Notten was locked in a ferocious four-boat scrap at the front of the Men’s Under 23 K1 race that was reduced to three after the dramatic disqualification of Hungarian star Grygory Jakab.
With the medallists decided Notten was left to slug it out with John Vold of Denmark and German ace Marcel Paufler to decide who would occupy which steps on the podium.
Vold took charge of the final end sprint and Notten was content to settle for the bronze medal at the end of a gripping race.
Maritzburg College schoolboys Mackenzie and Evans grabbed the first medals for Team SA missing out on a world title by the narrowest of margins.
The race was soured however by an appeal by one of the trailing Spanish crews objecting to the South Africans paddling under one particular arch of the bridge over the river.
Despite the fact that it had no impact on the outcome of the race, the race officials slapped the crew of Mackenzie and Evans with a fifteen second penalty that took them down to third.
The duo, who raced to the silver medal at last year’s world championships at Camps Drift, raced a hugely courageous race, staging a staggering solo break during the first half of the six lap contest and went into the last 1000 metre lap seemingly holding all the cards over the powerful Danish crew of Thornbjorn Rask and Nikolai Thomsen.
The Danes timed their charge in the finish lane to perfection and surged in the final stroke of the race, forcing the judges to a photo finish to confirm that they had indeed pipped the South African crew by an estimated three centimetres.
“I definitely didn’t expect the rest of the bunch to catch us after we got away,” said Mackenzie after the race. “Rask and Thomsen are so powerful, we just couldn’t hold them off at the finish.”
The Euro Steel Maritzburg College pair were dominant on the portages and managed to establish and build on their leads using their running prowess at the end of each lap.
“We had practiced our portages so many times, we knew we could get away there, but it is a long way,” said Mackenzie.
“When they caught us I did feel like we still had it because we could rest on the diamond, but they were the better crew on the day,” he added.
Compatriots Uli Hart and Matt Fenn were also on the front bunch early on but were the first casualties of the ferocious pace and tactical jousting on the front bunch, and were left to race alone into fifth position overall.
Earlier in the day the Junior Women’s K2 racing saw Hamish Mackenzie’s cousin Caitlin Mackenzie race into eighth position and teammates Amy Peckett and Cayleigh Shaw earning a solid top ten finish two places further back.
Saturdays programme sees South African paddlers taking on the Men’s K1 and the Women’s K1 races.
Dave Evans (back) and Hamish Mackenzie won the silver medal in the Men’s Under 18 K2 race on the second day of the 2018 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Vila de Prado, in Portugal.
