Volume Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition with Krueck + Sexton, Reflections – From There to Here, opening Saturday, September 9th from 5-8 PM at 1709 W Chicago Ave, Chicago IL, 60622.

Ron Krueck and Mark Sexton have worked in partnership for over 35 years. Their first private residence commission was the now iconic Steel and Glass House (Chicago, 1979). Soon after completion, they began a series of commissions for prominent Chicago tastemakers including Beverly/Barry Crown and Joan Weinstein – the owner of Ultimo, an infamous fashion boutique known for bringing Giorgio Armani and Sonia Rykiel to Chicago.

Reflections, focuses on works – specifically, chairs – from these 1980s commissions, which propelled Krueck + Sexton’s career. Larger projects, ranging in scale, followed–from restoring Crown Hall to larger buildings like Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago, as well as numerous projects around the U.S. and Europe.

Central to Reflections is the Lounge Chair. Originally designed for the Weinstein commission, this piece is being realized for the first time. Fabricated by the same metal craftsmen that were responsible for the production of all of the furniture from the 1980s, the Lounge Chair is a beautiful example of Krueck + Sexton’s unique approach to juxtaposing a cool material like polished stainless steel with the bronze metallic leather.

Each piece of furniture in Reflections is an elegant expression of form, proportion, and sensuous materials. The structures are highly reflective appearing to lighten the mass of the design. The byproduct of reflectivity is that it absorbs and becomes part of the environment it is placed. It is an object at one moment and folds into space the next. The reflective stainless steel enables an expression of fluidity in form. Paradoxically, each organically inspired piece appears to be a celebration of industrial design, while in reality they are all meticulously handmade.

The mohair and cotton velvet fabric is a natural material that is visually soft with multidimensional hues created by how the light hits it and is used in all of the chairs. The fabric is supple and almost warm to the touch, in contrast to the cool precision of the machine made stainless steel. The connections are all about expressing how materials are put together. They are often highly articulated to support the visual delight, rhythm and scale of the object. Although the furniture was designed for specific residences, their classic form and materials allow them to work outside the original space.

Ron Krueck was born in 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where, in his early years, he was exposed to art in the local art museum and was encouraged to draw. He chose to study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where he was impressed with Crown Hall, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

During the summers, while studying at IIT, Krueck traveled, thinking he could gain more architectural insights from seeing the world’s great cities and monuments than from working. After he received his B.A. from IIT in 1970, Krueck took a job at the Chicago office of C.F. Murphy, now Jahn, and then with the office of Hammond Beeby. In 1975 he left the practice of architecture to study painting and drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, until he opened his office with the commission of The Steel and Glass House in 1979.

The studio continues to be influenced by Krueck’s interest in art, as well as by his early education in the Modernist doctrines at IIT. Krueck had worked with Mark Sexton for ten years when they established the office of Krueck & Sexton Architects in 1991. Krueck has taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and at the Illinois Institute of Technology, a position he held until 2012.

Krueck’s built work has received numerous design awards, and his architectural drawings are in museum collections and have been exhibited in exhibitions worldwide since 1981. Krueck is active in Chicago’s cultural affairs and serves on boards and committees of related interest. Krueck was elected to the Interior’s Hall of Fame, as well as to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 1992.

Mark Sexton is a founding partner of Krueck + Sexton Architects, Mark designs and manages all of the firm’s work along with Ron Krueck. His belief that exceptional architecture can and does make a difference to people’s lives is a hallmark of the studio. His dedication to craftsmanship, material, and detail enables the firm’s built work to express the values of modern design with a timeless quality.

Mark graduated from the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1980 and continues his support of the school serving on the Board of Advisors. He is a member of the GSA Design Excellence Program National Registry of Peer Professionals, the Chicago Architecture Biennial board and is on the faculty of Northwestern University teaching Architecture Engineering and Design at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

He received the distinction of Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2006 and annually participates in the Bridge mentor program sponsored by the AIA, College of Fellows and Young Architects Forum.

Mark lectures at diverse venues worldwide including universities, cultural institutions and conferences. Sharing the firm’s experience of collaboration, he has participated in symposiums jointly with clients, consultants and colleagues.

Volume Gallery has a specific focus on American design, particularly emerging contemporary designers. Founded by design specialists Sam Vinz and Claire Warner, Volume Gallery releases editions, publications, and exhibits that showcase the work of American designers to regional, national, and international audiences. Volume Gallery asks critical questions of what it means to be an American designer in a culture that is rapidly becoming global in scale, while simultaneously examining the American experience. Volume Gallery is derived from a compulsion to provide a platform for emerging American designers to engage with an international audience.

A structural evaluation revealed that the stone cladding was unstable. For the client, Tishman Speyer, it was an opportunity to change the image and metrics of this commercial office building with a catch: the building’s tenants could not be displaced.

Renault's EZ-ULTIMO is a self-driving luxury lounge

With its last two concept cars, the EZ-GO and EZ-PRO, Renault focused on how autonomous cars could transport people and packages en masse, with a bit of style. With its latest car, the EZ-ULTIMO, the automaker is focusing mostly on the "style" part. Unveiled appropriately at the Paris Auto Show, it's a robotic EV concept that offers a "premium travel experience" rather than basic transportation, coddling occupants in wood, marble and leather.

Much like the EZ-GO and EZ-PRO, the EZ-ULTIMO is an all-electric, connected and autonomous vehicle. Renault sees it as a luxury vehicle for hire owned by ride-hailing services, five-star hotels, airlines or businesses. It could be offered to clients as a fancy perk, ferrying folks to a Michelin-starred restaurant, or important business clients from the airport to a hotel.

As radical as the other vehicles looked, Renault has amped up the EZ-ULTIMO's styling to another level. Inspired in part by the classic Renault Reinastella, it has a Batmobile-meets-Bentley vibe on the outside, with a spacious "neo-retro" leather, marble and wood interior meant to resemble an old-fashioned Parisian apartment.

As opposed to the EZ-GO, which used glass to increase a rider's safety by make them more visible, Renault's latest concept is about privacy. Occupants are invisible thanks to the one-way mirror effect of the "technical faceting" glass on the exterior. It also messes with observers' heads: "At first sight it appears to be deep black in color," Renault explains. "As the vehicle approaches, the light brings out bright and sparkling hints of green.The vehicle's appearance changes as it moves, so it appears to be alive."

A smartphone app lets you book the vehicle and access route planning and destination info. Even boarding the vehicle is meant to be an experience. When the large side door opens, the upper glass sections pop up automatically. There's no B-pillar, so you can simply step into the car, and the seats rotate to help you more easily take your place.

Renault/Bertrand Le Pluard

The EZ-ULTIMO has level 4 self-driving capability, but unlike the EZ-GO, is meant to be taken on highways as well as city roads. Built with the same electric platform as the other two EZ-vehicles, it has front-wheel drive and uses a wireless recharging system. Autonomous driving cameras, radar and LiDAR cameras and sensors are fitted into discreet boxes on the car's corners. Occupants get WiFi via a 5G antenna (5G doesn't exist yet in France, but hey, it's a concept).

While the fairings nearly touch the ground, an active suspension raises the vehicle automatically over bumps. And though the vehicle is a whopping 5.8 meters (19 feet) long, four-wheel steering makes it nimble enough for Paris' tight streets. Finally, at higher speeds, two small side wings deploy behind the rear fairings to improve the aerodynamics.

The EZ-ULTIMO completes Renault's trilogy of fantastical concept cars, which help us imagine an autonomous EV future more about ride sharing than private transportation. It's also obviously a way to market its styling and engineering chops, but that alone doesn't justify the expense in developing such costly vehicles. Rather, Renault seems to be making a serious effort to probe cutting edge tech and design in order to help itself -- and the public -- better visualize a world with fewer cars.

For years I have tried to feel identified with Moschino, and therefore with his creative director Jeremy Scott. It just never happened. Probably due my love for boho chic, perfect tailoring and conceptually- aggressive statements. The self-proclaimed “fashion’s last rebel” never fulfilled my expectations, disguising pop art as irreverence just doesn’t work on its self anymore. Basically it’s just tacky. I only liked the brand’s “this is not a toy” perfume label because it reminded me of an iconic Magritte painting (ceci n'est pas une pipe)

So, even though my personal feelings towards the brand, I watched the 2019 show. Itself, it wasn’t particularly shocking, but what it was pretty interesting about it was people’s reaction to it. Several Fashion blogs and twitter users noticed the similarities between Scott’s latest show with the 2017 spring-wear show from a Norwegian womenswear designer based in London. The designer Edda Gimnes says she actually met with someone from Moschino in New York last November and showed that person, whom she does not name, all of her work, including her sketchbooks and ideas. “Seeing the Moschino show yesterday makes me so sad and I feel so hurt that someone has, the way it looks to me, unquestionably used my SS16 and SS17 collections as inspiration without granting me any credit,” she writes.

I do not want to split hairs over the brand’s development, but you can see it was pretty congruent with pop’s art premise that it often takes imagery that its currently in use in advertising. But in this last collection what is undergoing? Where is that imagery? “The premise for Spring was that I didn’t have time to finish the collection, so all I have are sketches,” he told Vogue.

Edda Gimnes its not a minor designer, The London College of Fashion graduate has been heralded as one to watch by a number of publications. When we dont have time to finish, we ask for help. And Edda Gimnes seems perfectly fit for the job. And she should have been quoted as a collaborator.

When will fashion industry fully embrace collective culture emphasizing on cohesiveness among individuals and prioritizing the group over the self? There is no shame in naming everyone who has participated in the creative process, so Mr. Scott has added something else to my personal list for not liking him.

To close up with PFW: Versace, Versace, Versace. We always love Donatella’s work. And this year to make it even better she used her former 90’s Versace-Girl Shalom Harlow (who we absolutely adore, finesse impersonated). Jacquemus also surprised with its show in the Parisian Italian-embassy, and I felt it as the most inclusive and diverse in terms of models casting. And I guess we are all waiting to have an occasion to wear that blue fringed dress with red leather knee boots from Gucci’s, and some other puffed shoulders looks.

No quiero encontrarle la quinta pata al gato sobre el desarrollo de la marca, pero se puede ver que fue bastante coherente con la premisa del arte pop que a menudo toma imágenes que están actualmente en uso en medios masivos y en publicidad. Pero cual es la interlinea de la ultima colección? De donde surge esta estética? “La premisa para primavera era que no tenía tiempo para terminar la colección, así que todo lo que tengo son bocetos”, le dijo a Vogue. Edda Gimnes no es una diseñadora desconocida. La egresada de El colegio de Moda de Londres ha aparecido en una serie de grandes publicaciones, incluyendo Vogue Britanica. Cuando no se tiene tiempo para terminar, se pide ayuda. Y Edda Gimnes parece perfectamente adecuada para el trabajo. Y debería haber sido citada como colaboradora de la colección.

¿Cuándo va a ser el momento en el que la industria de la moda adopte plenamente la cultura colectiva haciendo hincapié en la cohesión entre las personas y priorizando al grupo por sobre el individuo?
