I noticed a stark difference in terms of promotions and castings between RB and Russian companies (particularly Mariinsky and Bolshoi).
1. RB is still going full-principal castings for the lead roles, although sometimes they cast first soloists too, and soloists once in a blue moon (usually in The Nutcracker). I think RB is quite hierarchical in terms of castings. Meanwhile those Russian companies tend to cast younger dancers for lead roles nowadays, and dancers at any rank could get the lead roles if the theatre wants.
2. It's not uncommon for freshgrads (or even graduating students) in Russian companies to get major soloist roles during their first year in the company, but in RB, the young dancers usually have to wait several years to get it. For example, Eva Sergeyenkova got to dance Queen of the Dryads with the main company before she even graduated, but Hanna Park and Sumina Sasaki only got the same role this season after they danced for 3-4 years with the company.
3. I know this is common knowledge: an exceptional Russian freshgrad could enter the company as a soloist without spending a single day in the corps. But in RB, no matter how exceptional the freshgrad is, they should start from the corps for several years before eventually getting promoted (some who were considered exceptional got promoted consecutively after spending several years in the corps, though).
I know that there's no perfect system, but from the perspective of a professional, which one do you think is the better system for the artist's growth? Sometimes, as a general audience, I think Russian companies' pace is too fast, and RB's is rather too slow.
I'm sorry if this is too long :') thank you in advance!
I don't disagree with anything you've written here. I think promoting young and giving chances young can work, but it has to be the right people. You mentioned several cases at ROH and agree with your interpretations. ABT is edging younger right now, but Chloe Misseldine, Sunmi Park and Jake Roxander have clearly proven they've got the chops. Even so, Chloe has done one major classical role and the others haven't yet.
This is a total 180 to recent graduates of BBA and VBA preparing nearly half a dozen of debuts leading roles in a season. ROH takes much slower approach and I think most of the time it pays off. Sometimes they lose people who want their careers to move more quickly but on the whole, I think slow and steady wins the race.
Ill ask you this, lately in the past 5 or so years, which company has been delivering the most consistent performances of quality, with a wide variety of dancers in the leading roles?

Is playing young Masha in vaganovaâs nutcracker an indicator of who will be a graduating top student?
Not always. Sofia Valiulina danced it the same year as Anna Sharova, they were considered just as good as first years, but Sofya graduated top of her class, while Anna didn't even get a solo in the graduation. Now, in Anna's case, I personally think it's just because she didn't grow taller, not because she suddenly stopped being good, a lot of good dancers get lost in VBA (and MT and BT) because they don't have the ideal body, especially the height.
Another thing, VBA is unique in the fact there's 2 Mashas. Act 1 and half of act 2 are done by little Masha (typically a first or second grader, rarely a third grader) and after the battle the rest of act 2 and act 3 are done by old Masha/princess Masha (upperclassmen, grades 7-8 more often than grade 6). What goes on plot wise is that little Masha has been dreaming after the end of act 1, and after the battle she becomes a grown up in her dream, a princess (because being in love is a grown up thing in that society, it's a coming of age story after all).
The issue is that a grade 2 girl (11-13) and a grade 7 girl (16-18) have the possibility to be very close height wise. It's not uncommon for girls with tall parents to be tall already at 12 years old, and not grow a significant amount after 15. Of course that's not true for everyone, but it means that you can have a little Masha and a princess Masha with 5-10cm of height difference, which breaks the illusion of a little girl dreaming of being a grown up, she needs to visually GROW in size.
So in casting, the people assigning roles prefer short kids in younger classes, and taller kids in older classes. The littles have to look like kids, and the upperclassmen need to look like adults in comparison (if you've noticed Aziz is not in snowflakes like some of her classmates). This means that girls that are naturally short while preferred in the early years fall out of favour later on if they don't grow, unless they have an insane amount of technical ability (Aziz)(a soloist doesn't need to match the height of the corps). Similarly, tall girls might never get any role until grade 5, even though they're good, because they stand out too much (I don't think Savelieva ever danced in MT productions, or as a kid in VBA nutcracker).
The height preference is also a thing when kids participate in Mariinsky productions (Sleeping Beauty, Corsaire, Bayadere, Pharaoh's Daughter, Shurale, ...). The kids need to look small next to the professionals, so in parts where the two coexist (Jardin Animé) taller women and short girls are picked. Notably, the Mariinsky Nutcracker is all adults, no students take part, don't ask me why. The Somova/Shklyarov video is that way specifically because it would be filmed.

thoughts on the new vaganava graduates from NT class?
Honestly, I haven't seen much of them this year â just a few clips from the exam.
Overall, the girls are talented and have some clearly noticeable strengths, such as impressive stamina, beautiful jumps with good height, and the ability to handle quick tempos and challenging choreography. However, there's also a slight lack of the qualities that makes vaganova dancers stand out as vaganova dancers, which, personally, I find to be a major issue. The lines, Ă©paulement, purity and refinement within and between movements donât seem to be at the standard weâve come to expect from VBA students. Of course, none of this is the dancersâ fault. They clearly work hard and are doing their best. But thereâs a reason these qualities, and the vaganova method as a whole, are so highly esteemed, and itâs unfortunate that they donât seem to have been a priority in their training over the past two years (which I believe is how long theyâve been under Tsiskaridzeâs guidance).
That said, Iâm particularly fond of Ekaterina Morozova. Sheâs a lovely dancer and was great as Flora in last yearâs graduation performance.
I wish them all good health, bright futures, and successful careers. Iâm very curious to see which theaters theyâll join and how theyâll grow as professional dancers.

In defence of tsiskaridze⊠he came to the school in 2015, which means heâs been rector for the whole time Koshkarova, Valiullina, Kuprina, Karamysheva, Gritsina, Barinova, Zakota, Solomina, Kishnova, Efimova and others were in the first grade. And they are beautiful dancers, like I think we are overestimating the changes happening. In addition to this, the class that Tsiskaridze took over was a âweak classâ (I swear these are his own words from an video with Ilya), and they look good in the exam, even though itâs not pure vaganova. However we donât know theyâre day to day classes. We donât know if during class they do plain vaganova pure exercises, and then tried something new and a bit bonkers just for the exam. I wouldnât be surprised, and it would explain why the exam isnât super clean, maybe they donât do these crazy exercises every day, just they put on a show for their exam, which is objectively more fun to watch, and maybe itâs more fun for them to execute, like the little variation breaks? Bonkers, but fun! We canât forget how passionate the Russians are about the art of ballet, they are so passionate and they are risk takers!
I'm not inclined to give Tsiskaridze undeserved credit. Of the four you named who are now relevant rising soloists, they all graduated under the guidance of Ludmila Kovaleva, the same woman who is responsible for Olga Smirnova, Kristina Shapran, Diana Vishneva, Maria Khoreva and Ekaterina Borchenko among other prominent dancers. Kovaleva has been producing world-class ballerinas for over 40 years, her teaching prowess and clear ability to transform students into ballerinas was well-known before Tsiskaridze ever stepped into his role at VBA.
I think Tsiskaridze's main abilities lie in coaching and administration. The way he developed Angelina Vorotsova as well as Denis Rodkin is proof of this. Furthermore, the way he's been able to raise the production quality of the VBA performances in terms of the staging, costuming and venue is remarkable, I'm not sure where he suddenly found the funds but he made it happen. In my opinion, based on the quality of his students, I don't think he's nearly as good a teacher- many great dancers aren't.
As someone who graduated from a prominent ballet academy and is now working professionally in a major theater, I can tell you that they absolutely spend significant amounts of their time in class practicing what they did during the exam. You can't suddenly do a full ballet class nonstop if it hasn't been practiced and rehearsed extensively. If they just suddenly decided to do a whole class of crazy combination sporadically or just for the exam, it would be a complete mess.
Furthermore, exams are not for fun, their purpose is not to entertain an audience. If you want to be entertained, go buy a ticket for a performance. The purpose of exams is to demonstrate the student's progress and assess their mastery of technique. Itâs about highlighting consistent and structured training that builds discipline, strength, precision, and artistry over time. If the whole class is dancing better in 'normal classes' than in an exam, what does that say about their preparation for high-pressure moments when working for a ballet company. It suggests their foundation might not be as solid as it should be.
Especially in Russia, passing the state exam determines your grades, your diploma, and your ability to work in a state theater. I personally think it's harder to accurately assess the skill of each individual dancer when the exams are overly choreographed with complex formations that showcase some students and hide others. When exams are so critical to a dancer's future cannot simply be viewed as a showcase for "fun" or "flashiness"âthey are fundamentally about the demonstration of technical mastery and readiness to join the professional world.

Are ballet intensives money grabbers? I think that if youâre in a great school already (Vba, Bba, la scala, Paris opera, princess grace or even royal ballet) they are unnecessary. Like students need their rest, and they can still do conditioning and barre exercises on vacation! Of course if youâre going with your friends they can be fun and an opportunity to do variations, and meet new teachers and friends, but at the same time⊠so expensive. My opinion is that they are not necessary but can be fun, but it saddens me to see students think they are absolutely necessary to get ahead, because I donât think they are.
I agree with you. If you study in one of the big ones, your job in the summer is to rest. That doesn't mean sit and eat ice cream, most if not all of those students continue to train in the summer, just more lightly (no allegro, less pointe, more focus on basic elements and corrections from the year).
If you are not in such a school, then yes, summer programs are an opportunity to be seen directly by the school, in the exact environment you wish to end up in. I mean that even if you're seen in competition, it might not be where the school is looking for recruits.
Now, this is all very general, going off of VBA, BBA, POB schedules. We have no idea what goes on in the rest of the world locally. For example, in my country, the entrance exams for professional schools are from mid-September to October. So starting 15th of August there are "summer intensives" (we call them preparation classes or preparation programs) from all the big schools, where we all go to not only get in shape after summer break, but to meet the teachers and get an idea of where we want to go if we pass (the exam is a state exam, so these teachers have no say on who passes). So in this context, summer intensives do have a point, even if we're not trying to get into Vaganova. There could very well be similar reasons to go somewhere different to train in the summer in other countries as well.

From Spreadsheets to Smart Tech: CFA Professionals Embrace AI

Finance today is facing unprecedented changes in the past decade. Automation, machine learning, and predictive analytics replace the traditional ways that were considered manual and relied heavily on data entry and spreadsheet analysis. Today the professions of CFA include financial analysts, and these professionals are becoming data-driven strategists who combine a strong financial background with IT skills. In recent decades, therefore, taking an online CFA course became popular as the avenue to acquiring both time-honored financial knowledge and newly found tech skills vital in this emerging sphere.
It is an overtly radical shift. Till recent years, spreadsheets such as Excel were regarded as financial modelling. As the newer demands of finance are coming in with volumes, velocity and complexity, Excel has been found to be increasingly incapable in holding its unique selling proposition with maximum impact. A CFA charterholder must, therefore, also acquire command of Python, R, and Tableau to remain in the race.
The Decline of Excel
Excel was considered to be synonymous with financial modeling for the past several decades. Analysts constructed elaborate spreadsheets with macros, pivot tables, and VBA scripts. But the financial markets today are flooded with real-time data, alternative datasets (like satellite images or sentiment analysis), and vast amounts of unstructured data; all which traditional spreadsheets cannot efficiently process.
New platforms, powered by AI, are filling that void. Machine learning algorithms can now predict changes in the market, measure credit risks, and potentially automate large segments of portfolio management. Financial modeling is not about achieving formulaic correctness, it is about developing flexible, intelligent models that can learn and gradually improve.
How AI is Changing the Face of Finance
Artificial intelligence is doing much more than just speeding up processes; it is changing the meaning of finance itself:
Portfolio Management: AI-powered robo-advisory solutions provide personalized portfolio construction with little human oversight.
Risk Analysis: Predictive analytic models help institutions such as JPMorgan Chase detect risks faster and more accurately than ever before.
Investment Research: Natural language processing-based platforms such as AlphaSense search thousands of reports, news articles, and transcripts in real-time to provide analysts in-depth insights without requiring them to search manually.
For CFA professionals, AI means a huge opportunity that liberates them from mundane tasks and gives them ample time to devote to high-level strategic thinking, advising clients, and making ethical decisions.
The skill sets that CFA professionals will need in 2025 and beyond
This tech-advanced environment needs a tool set upgrade; hence, modern-day CFA charterholders and candidates are focusing on:
Programming Skills: This includes knowledge of coding in languages such as Python, R, or SQL that are highly relevant for data analysis.
Data Visualization: Mastery of modern communication tools like Tableau or Power BI.
Machine Learning Literacy: To effectively collaborate with data scientists, an understanding of elementary ML concepts is required.
Cybersecurity Awareness: The protection of financial data is paramount; CFA professionals need an understanding of the issues around privacy and compliance.
This evolution has been establishing a bigger trend. Finance is no longer separated from technology; it is driven by technology.
The Real-Life Examples Pushing the Frontiers of AI
Some of the leading institutions today are showcasing the possibilities:
BlackRock's Aladdin uses AI and big data to optimize portfolio management for trillions in assets.
An AI solution at Morgan Stanley helps advisors provide personalized insights to clients faster.
Goldman Sachs' Marcus platform employs machine learning for smarter credit products and risk models.
Boutique investment firms and start-ups are also leveraging AI to build bespoke financial products, automate auditing, and predict emerging market opportunities.
The integration of AI is not something in the future; it is already occurring. CFA professionals conversant with and working on such systems will be in a position to take the lead.
Challenges of the Transition
Steep Learning Curve: Not every finance professional has his way through coding or data science.
Data Quality: AI will become an effective tool only when fed with good quality data, and either way, poorly structured data will lead to bad predictions.
Etical Risks: The decisions made by AI must be ethical; this is a key focus for CFA charterholders.
Job Displacement: Some traditional financial job roles can become extinct due to automation if professionals do not keep pace.
Still, for those willing to evolve, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Conclusions: Surfing the Financial Technology Wave
Financial professionals must develop a hybrid skillset: the analytical depth of a CFA and the technical agility of a data scientist. The dynamic combination will define leadership in finance for many years to come.
There is a global surge in demand for finance professionals who possess AI, automation, and big data skills, especially in regions undergoing rapid financial innovation. Thanks to high-quality educational avenues, the likes of online CFA course in UAE, professionals can upgrade their skills to meet the market's changing expectations without interrupting their careers.
Excel or AI, the principles are the same, excellent, ethical, and intelligent financial analysis. The tools may change, but the unwavering commitment to good work will not.
