I've been on a real space sim kick lately with the double feature of No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous. Both games have a surprising amount in common as giant endless procedural exploration do everything space sims, but they attack the problem from two completely different perspectives. There's a great contrast between the two and they complement each other well.

I had a very bad first impression of No Man's Sky. They just did a free weekend, and the way they had set that up, I found completely overwhelming and was thoroughly confused the entire time. They just throw too many things at you all at once, since what you're actually playing is a sort of side-story that seems designed for experienced players.

There was still enough I liked about the game that I was still thinking about it. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was missing something. A week later I bought the full game, started playing the vanilla questlines which introduce mechanics one by one, and now I'm completely hooked. The sort of dream-like spatial and temporal incoherence of the game still really bothers me, and you have to be in the mood for it, but when it clicks boy does it click. This is a game that's easy to spend hours playing in one sitting because there's never a shortage of things to do and places to go.

Elite is a game that I played a lot of around its launch in 2014, and then haven't really played much of since. It's gotten a ton of updates, and several major expansions adding planetside landings, capital ships, and even walking around on foot.

I've been surprised by how much I like the on foot and planetary landings. They add a lot of flavor to the game since before you were always in your ship flying between space stations. There's a lot more to do now, with a formal mission system, much more usable ingame UI (though you should still reference external tools for trade routes).

From the very beginning Elite always got the hard things really right. The sound design and polish of the ships and their flight is top notch even a decade later, and I adore how the game is physically grounded in reality with how it depicts star systems and stellar phenomena. It's the kind of game that has you reading up on stellar evolution in bed.
