The Honeydrippers
The Honeydrippers were a post Led Zeppelin side work for musician Robert Plant, letting him to engage his genuine love for classic R&B. Plant in fact established the Honeydrippers in 1981 in order to resume his pre-Zeppelin origins in American blues and R&B; the band got its name from blues pianist Roosevelt Sykes' nickname.
The initial group listed guitarists Robbie Blunt, saxophonist Keith Evans, Andy Sylvester, bassist Jim Wickman, saxophonist/harmonica player Ricky Cool, and drummer Kevin O'Neil. Even so, as soon as Plant started playing with Blunt on original material, he considered it more suitable for his objectives as a alone artist, and he consequently created a hard rock backing unit, placing the Honeydrippers within the back burner.
Soon after his 2nd single album, Plant expanded the Honeydrippers, this time having an extraordinary roster of studio friends which includes guitar players Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and keyboardist Paul Shaffer, Nile Rodgers, drummer Dave Weckl and bassist Wayne Pedziwiatr. With each other they recorded the 5 track EP The Honeydrippers, Volume. 1, that was released in 1984 and included Plant's takes on '50s and '60s R&B volumes. The 1st single, a cover of Phil Phillips' "Sea of Love," was a break, peaking at number 3 in the American chart, in fact, better than Led Zeppelin's top charting solo "Whole Lotta Love."
Stray Cats guitar player Brian Setzer joined up with the Honeydrippers' live concert group, and conducted with the band on Saturday Night Live. Soon after touring with the Honeydrippers in 1985, Plant continued his solitary career; there's never been a Honeydrippers, Vol. Two. In 2006, Plant quickly improved the project under the label The Return of the Honeydrippers in a charity live concert he held for a friend who has been having cancer treatment.
