Let me take the $10 I get “paid” when I spent hours in the dmv/probate judge/bank/lawyer or whatever office it is to replace the hundreds of dollars of perfume, makeup, clothes, water bottles and personal care item you take from me every other day. Sure, I can replace them, with money that I don’t have and people who are dead. Nothing is sentimental. Nothing is sacred. I put a lock on one of my bags to keep her from take it stuff. She stole my pliers and broke it off. She comes into my room while I’m sleeping to take my fucking tooth paste and deodorant despite making my grandma spend god knows how much on ones she won’t use because she doesn’t like them, not allergic just won’t use them. And while she has ten deodorants and fifteen lotions and body washes she takes the ONE I have. We get a little bit of what it “means to be a man” in this chapter.If all this stuff was kept in the actual English version it’s no wonder the schools might as well recalled their usage.Sure,schools vary but for me I vaguely remember a book they were set on having us read as fourth graders but then it was pulled once a student mentioned it said “ass” even though the context was donkey.

I’m sure by this point anything that mentions tobacco and/or alcohol usage on the spot must have also been shelved.They try to preserve the purity of elementary school students as long as they can,after all and this story has already proven in many ways it’s doing the opposite in American sentiments.

Keep in mind I was almost tempted to apply usage of “Son of a bitch” during a certain line of dialogue but I found a more professional/child safe alternative.Even if some of this is starting to seem a bit sexual if your mind has been corrupted enough.

Beardley and White kept to their word.Two days later,Giles found himself at his old placement,near the lamppost.

But what a difference!Giles was completely refurbished.Beardley had caringly removed the dents.He had plugged the deepest gashes with plaster and re-welded the large tear near the meter.Then he painted him a bright lemon yellow,cleaned the rubber arm and shined the pistol. Even set back up in place.

Well at ease,Giles warmed up in the sun.The lamppost had blinked a few times with its light.

A huge semi-trailer truck stopped creaking and smoking along the road.It was three times higher than Giles and was certainly about sixty-six feet long.Was the driver stopping for him?Did he need gasoline?The longer Giles looked at the truck,the more he felt himself shrink.Under the truck,there were two gigantic reservoirs which were almost as big as him.Would he manage to fill them?Would he have enough gas?

Giles seemed suffocated.Why wasn’t it a small car that stopped?In the end,this was the first time.It’s never easy!The driver got out, circled his truck and kicked the tires a few times.Then he walked slowly to the lamppost and started to urinate.Finding this action unworthy,the lamppost raised its light to the sky.

Giles was more concerned with his fate than his friend.His meter was in order,he was sure of it!White had tidied up the numbers and greased the mechanism.Giles felt a sense of freedom.

He also had an automatic money distributer.It was Beardley who had put then on.

“It must work!”Giles said to himself for a bit of courage.”If I can't do it now I will never make it.”

The driver had finished and lit a cigarette.

“And now to refuel,” he grumbled,”otherwise I won't make it home.” Without hurrying,he approached Giles.

“First let's see how much gasoline costs here.”He looked towards the meter and read ‘Price per liter’.

“What???” he exclaimed in disbelief.”Thirty-Five dollars!?That’s shockingly expensive.Normally,a liter is about $25.30!”Giles obviously couldn't have known that.White had indicated the price and Giles thought it was correct.

Beep!

He quickly changed the three to a two.

“Eh,” the driver wondered,”did I misread it?Now it’s twenty-three dollars.That’s much cheaper!The cheapest pump in the whole country.I will immediately refuel.”

He pulled out a wad of bills from his wallet,smoothed them out and inserted them one-by-one into the automatic slot.

“This is the first money I made on my own,”thought a proud and jubilant Giles.As soon as he felt the first bill in the slot,but also the driver's fingers.

“Sale distributor!”The driver withdrew his hand,swearing,and rubbed his aching fingers.

Giles was bewildered by his own strength.

“Calm down,” he said to himself.”It’s important to not get overstimulated.”And he sucked up the money very carefully.He was starting to like it and he kept sucking long after the last dollar was gone.The driver frowned and kicked the slot.

Giles gulped,”How difficult! You must think about everything at the same time!What should I do now?That’s right,the gas!Oh,is it going to be ready?”

Suddenly he felt very empty inside.

“What should I do?How do I go about it?”

Desperate,he looked towards the lamppost who nodded to him.The driver grabbed the pistol and picked it up.

“I won’t make it in time…” moaned Giles.”And he spat a blast of gasoline in the air.”

“Hey,ho,stop…”the driver yelled as he tried to take back the gas pipe.Before he got there he was soaked in gasoline.

“For goodness’ sake!” he growled. “This pump is a catastrophe!”

The lemon yellow color on Giles was changing more and more into that of a red tomato.He wanted to sink into the ground in shame.What a fool he was!

The driver thought about all the money he had put in the pump,and he tried again.On the side of caution.This time,Giles pinched his pipe.

“Think of nothing,” he said to himself.

“Think of nothing!” The man pushed the pistol into the reservoir of his truck.”Think of nothing,”Giles repeated.The man waited.”Well?What happens now?”

Not a drop came out.The man left the pistol where it was,stepped forward furiously towards Giles and kicked him in the butt like he hadn't received in years.

“Ding-Ding!”went a frightened Giles. His meter began to run and gasoline began to flow at full speed through his rubber arm.

“Sometimes you just gotta give 'em a good blow,”the man said satisfied.”It helps more than swearing or begging.”

The lamppost smiled,” You were awesome,you know.I'm really proud of you!”

Very satisfied,Giles stretched out his rubber arm.He felt good in the sunshine.He listened to the birds singing and hammering with pleasure.Hammering???

“There is something wrong.” Giles thought.

“Birds don’t hammer.Not even when they make their nest.”

“Hey,lamppost,” he shouted,” do you also hear that noise?”

The lamppost,who was dozing,perked up”What?Isn’t that you?I thought you were playing with your meter.”

They both looked around.A little further on,two men were doing work.

They had established a roadblock across the width of the road and now were placing a large sign.

“They’re crazy!”exclaimed Giles furiously.”They throw all kinds of things in the middle of the path.If this continues,no one will be able to pass.”

“There’s letters on this sign,” said the lamppost.

Giles looked it over and over,but couldn't read.

“Do you see what is written?” the lamppost asked.

They stretched as far as they could.”There are four words written one below the other,”they grumbled.

Inspired by Under The Banyan Tree of R.K. Narayan’s short fiction A Career

Once I was a cook in a Chinese restaurant in Sta. Cruz Manila, until the end of the red regime in 1986. My everyday life was immersed in my deep relationship with vegetables, meat of all sorts, fish, and spices. I have dedicated my time cooking savory dishes that would make our customers satisfied. This ordinary routine came to an end when the news about political chaos was announced over radios and tv, triggering a civil conflict and turning the moments of the day into a vacuum of silence. I admit I have no interest in political matters, but my way of gathering information is peculiar and I think it's canny. I would like to believe that hearsay is of a different value. I would tell this seriously with the other chefs in the kitchen then leave them pondering with a grin.

A week passed, when I came home from work, I told my wife about my resignation and my decision to venture to another source of living. My wife did not express any refute to my decision nor she pressed any responses of the effect of that in the family. “Life will go on, I have saved a little money for us to survive,” I said firmly.

A year after my imminent early retirement, and on a favorable fortune, I was able to establish a humble car repair shop along with the boulevard extension in Pasay, hung up on a large board with the inscription The One Stop Repair Shop. - The roadside became a parking lot for my clientele. As the days passed and work kept me busy, the jeepney drivers became my friends, and my suppliers of equipment welcomed me warmly. This business friendship eventually made my machine tools get plenty of different sorts as repair issues came in variety from simple tire repairs, welding loose shocks, and suspension, and building sidecars for motorcycles converted into a trike.

One day a young fellow presented himself at my shop. He looked about twenty, fair and bright. He wore faded blue jeans, a white shirt, and a green scarf on his neck. “What can I do for you?” I asked, taking him as a young customer that might ask for a service repair. If I am not much into details I wouldn’t notice the purple prayer beads when he brought his palm together as if in prayer and said, “Please help me, sir. I will do any work you may give me for any kindness you may render in return.” There is something of a magnet in his persona that made me quickly decide. I thought anyway that it is opportune to hire an assistant in the shop. “I am a law-abiding citizen, sir, and susceptible to moral influences,” I spoke to him for about an hour. He said that he belonged to a family of wealthy landowners in Sorsogon, his mother died of multiple organ failure because of diabetes, his father took a mistress and he was ill-treated by his relatives and consequently ran away from home. A poignant story indeed, initially I felt. I directed him to my house which was only two blocks away from the main road and gave him a note of instruction for my wife to be handed, and when I went home in the evening I found that he had already made himself a great favorite there. His life story has deeply moved my wife and the children. “So young!” She whispered to me, “Without a father or a mother, it will be so difficult to deal with life this early!” She sighed. He had made himself lovable already.

The other skill of Emil was his brilliance in history and literature. It was never a fail to him to remember all, he would tell stories to my children at night of epic heroes of mythology to urban legends of aswang, tikbalang, tiyanak, and folk tales of other regions; Amazingly, if someone would ask 'where these stories he learned from' he would answer, “I have read a wide array of books from public libraries, I have some books collected but unfortunately destroyed by a typhoon that devastated the provinces of the south.” The children had already developed a male-nanny relationship at an instant, “Let Emil stay in our house, he is great, he can attend to children, and tell them more stories and help them do their school works.” My wife looked at me with a smile of approval.

Emil offered himself to help in the kitchen and it was a random attempt. “Why won't you allow me to help in the kitchen? Is it because you think I can't cook? Give me a chance and see.” He said with audacity. I protested at first as I doubted his capability for the task. He dashed into the kitchen and prepared delicious food for us. We were all very pleased. After that I allowed him to freely work on the stove, and as well it did not require much time to train him on the simple chores in the shop. In a matter of a week, he already learned how to dismount truck tires, and the iron treatment of the rubber interior was superbly clean and customer service was at par to gain my client's trust. After a month my confidence had turned, no doubt entrusting the management of every service request. He had many attractive ways about him, our clients liked to talk to him, he helped everyone to the best of his capacity.

The result of Emil's presence in the shop was a real convenience, and the sales increased nearly tenfold. I had plenty of rest now. “Beautiful!” I told myself. I left the shop entirely in his care, there are many instances where my wife and I talked about giving him deserved compensation for the undoubted effort, we felt we ought not to exploit his kindness but when the subject was pressed his eyes turned glassy and said, “If you don't want me to stay anymore just tell me straight and I'll leave.”

Five years and a half passed. He lived with us through all our joys and sorrows, the business had prospered enormously. We were living in a bigger house in the same place. I had immense work orders from clients of all sorts of machines and automobile repairs. This business gave me large profits. It kept me running to look for other suppliers who would be able to provide large quantities of auto parts and other metal supplies. The shop was entirely in Emil’s hand. - At a near-distant district in Manila, I used to stop in a shop supplies store in Recto, bidding a price canvass for the next month supplies of the shop in which have kept me busy the whole day till the late afternoon. When I went home at eight o’clock, Emil was at the doorstep of the house all prepped with a bulging knapsack on his shoulders red-eyed and sobbing, Emil said, “My father, father, stroke. Never thought he would get it!” I consoled him. I had never seen him so broken, “He will survive, don’t worry,” I said shakily. And maybe because of the surprising news, I had hardly to ask about the shop – “I have handed the keys and the cash payments to Mother.” – “All right, all right,” I will look at all that, “don’t worry anymore,” I said. Immediately, I arranged a means of transport for him and instructed the taxi driver to take him safely to Pantranco bus station. The car jolted forward and he put his head out of the window and said, “I will be back in two weeks if my father gets well, whatever happens, I won’t be away for more than fifteen days. “Topeng has asked me to bring him,” – His voice receded while getting far from where I stood praying in my mind for him a farewell – “A wooden toy car, please tell him that I will surely bring it, my regards to mother,” tears welled up and rolled down his cheeks. He put out his arm and waved goodbye to indicate “I will surely be back soon!”

Having some unfinished Recto business on hand, I could hardly go near the shop for a week. When I reopened, the first thing I noticed was some of the new machine tools I bought for quite a price were missing. I read the account books and examined them. The entries made were all in a mess. I put them away. Having my regular clients informed that the shop has reopened is more imperative. I went out to see the signage and turned on the lights.

The usurer Digoy lived a few blocks from the shop. Called me up that afternoon and said that he needed to reassess something on my account of borrowed money. I am so much sure of the balance that I left unpaid and today is not yet due to make a payment. “I’ll be there, yes I will,” I put back the phone on the hook. The conversation made me think – not so sure but it made me confident to see him. I owed an enormous debt of gratitude to this person for the unlimited credit he allowed me at the start of the life of my business. - After some introductory and inconsequential talk, I put before him the matter of his call. He gave me a grin, He said “What on earth are you being forgetful my friend?” He opened a book that is in disordered pages of a ledger and showed me the line of the outstanding balance that is under my name. The figures showed: Sixty-three thousand nine hundred fifty-three and zero cents. I stooped forward and read it with my lips and frowned “What?” I almost fell out of poise when I tried to resume my posture. “I only owed you the total balance of twenty-three thousand, and made a payment sixteen thousand before its due last week which made my belief of seven thousand as the total balance up to date,” I explained. “Don’t get me wrong my friend, you are a businessman and so am I.” He recited this with full authority, “No use talking indirectly and vaguely, I will tell you what the matter is, your account stands as the figures shown in the record, and if you have paid at least the sum of the amount you mentioned, I should have considered your last statement of seven thousand,” this is the first time in my life I heard him talk to me like that. “But, last week I sent the sum of sixteen thousand to partially pay off the debt – There must be a balance of,” he took his ledger again and showed me no payment was made and there were additional cash loans that added up and made the sum of the outstanding balance to be claimed. “The young fellow said that business was brisk and you would clear the account at once the date that was promised which was supposed to be yesterday – And as I didn't hear any word from you I called up.” I felt my head was shot. “I will see you again,” and went back to my shop. I examined the books once again. The pages showed some collectible amounts from customers I supplied metal and auto parts. The next day I went to collect the payments. Mr. Fajardo looked surprised. “There must be a mistake. We paid the bills completely the other day. Otherwise, Emil would not leave us in peace.” - My wife said, “he was coming early at two in the afternoon, he used to tell me that you were meeting your old comrades and you sent him home early.” And ask him, “how’s the shop?” He replied, ‘The shop is good, good, there is a little slack but good, don’t worry, leave it all to me I will manage.’

Manong Isidro, a peddler of soy milk who used to spend the afternoon in my shop, to help and be paid an extra half-day wage asked me, “Where is the young apprentice you had?” - I told him. “Look here,” the old man said. “Keep this to yourself. You remember they lived next door to us, those people from Ermita?” He made sure that there was no other eavesdropping before he continued, “Your boy was socializing with them a little too much. You know there was a tall, pretty girl with them. Your fellow was taking her out every afternoon in a taxi, those people went back to Ermita a few days ago.” This information led me to inquire more about Emil. I learned that there were a couple of loans of branded shirts, jeans, perfumes, and wristwatches, a pair of jackets that were left unpaid in his name, and left a promissory note under my guarantee. I learned his father is all well and has never been ill. This information came from his near relative who was once employed by one of my suppliers of motorcycle brakes. In tallying these accounts of information, Emil was never known to have visited Sorsogon.

I sold my shop and all things I have achieved through my hard-earned money and effort, paid off all my credits, and left Pasay. I was bankrupt, with a wife and three children to keep up with, living on the charity of friends, relatives, and unknown people. Sometimes nobody would feed us and we threw ourselves at night time in Luneta Park. I know I don’t need to exhaust you of my account of struggles. I must tell you about Emil. I have to add only this coming from my own and not from any hearsay.

Four years later I came across a welding shop owner in Quezon City where they manufacture scrap metal thin plates and made them into an art deco for home wall ornamentation. I looked at the displays which looked like a harem of peafowls all around the shop. But there’s one hanging alone on the wall that caught my curiosity, an iridescent blue, white, purple, and green peacock with its train all spread out. “Beautiful isn't it?” Said the man wearing a red beret “Yes, it is!” - Our conversation started from there and he trusted me swiftly and gave me a fresh start, and I must say thanks to him, and my experience and knowledge in the metal business joined together. All I can say is the event has fallen into unexpected synchronicity.

Now about Emil, A year ago I was walking along Baclaran while enjoying my survey of bargain clothes and toys for children: I had passed a few steps of the sidewalk along with the sampaguita vendors. When a familiar voice echoed resoundingly to my ears from among the group of vagrants lined along the way. I stopped. And there he was, I could hardly recognize him now. I had seen him off ten years before.

Quickly it came to flash the last I could remember his face, waving goodbye and never coming back. His face was now dark, scarred, and dented. His eyes were fixed in gaze. I could not have noticed him if he hadn’t called out for alms. His voice never changed. I stopped and said, “Look here.” He sensed my presence but did not recognize, “I can’t see, I am blind” He said in a raspy voice “Who are you? Where do you come from?” I asked in a voice that I tried to disguise. “Go! go your way. Why do you want to know all that?” He said. I told myself in the name of my family that if I see him again I would tear his flesh and break his bones, but this was not at all I had hoped to meet him again. I felt confused and unhappy. I dropped a coin on his raised palm and passed on. But after moving a few steps I stopped and beckoned another beggar sitting by his side. He came up. I held up another coin before him and said. “You may have this if you tell me something about the blind man” - “I know him,” said this beggar, who had no arms. “We keep together. He has arms but no eyes; I have eyes but no arms and so we find each other helpful. We moved about together. He came here about two years ago; He once had a lot of money in Ermita, Pampanga, or somewhere. Glaucoma took away his sight. His wife, a bad sort, deserted him... But surely you would not tell him I have spoken all this? He becomes wild if those days are mentioned.”

I went back to Emil, stood there before him, and watched him for a moment. I felt like shouting, ‘Emil, what a misfortune you have suffered enough. Now come with me. Where is your sweetheart? Where is my money?’ But I checked on myself that the greatest kindness I could do for him now is to leave him alone. I silently took out a fifty pesos paper bill and placed it on his hands - immediately he kept the money inside a grubby sling bag, he brought his palm together as if in prayer and said gratefully “Salamat po!” I had already moved a few steps when I heard him say, “Patawad po” as his way of asking for mercy and alms. I stopped. I did not turn my head to have another look at him. I smiled and went ahead because there is no other way now but to move forward.

*manong - manang (feminine) a hierarchical marker, it is used to refer to any male/female who is older than the speaker within his or her family but it could also be used for men outside the family to convey respect.

Breaking Barriers

Growing-up in Boston in the 1990s, the coastal landscape featured a Goliath-sized crane, a 3,000-ton gantry crane at General Dynamics’ Fore River Shipyard.

“It’s the second largest crane in the world,” my father would tell me. “The biggest one is in Russia.” I don’t know if that last part was true, but it’s a fond memory of my father. What I do know is that the massive Fore River crane was a phenomenal piece of machinery that was also completely unemployed and useless in all the years I looked at it. When I was 20, the majestic beast was finally dismantled and eventually reassembled in Romania at the Magnolia Shipyard, but not before taking the lives of three local New Englanders working on its dismantling between 2005 and 2008.

As a child, looking up at the Goliath crane was awe-inspiring. As an adult, I consider it kind of depressing – and certainly in a financial sense. During its time in Boston, that crane spent 11 years working, constructing eight LNG tankers and five maritime prepositioning ships, followed by 22 years of sitting idle as a 100-meter-tall piece of art.

Shipyard owners, terminal operators and vessel owners may well appreciate art as much as anyone, but it’s generally not what they’re looking for when buying cranes for their facilities and ships. In an age of rapidly developing technology, practicality is still paramount.

For example, smart or intelligent features such as target positioning, sway control, 3D wire monitoring, automatic cooling and many other automated or semi-automated technologies stand to improve safety and efficiency. Likewise, cranes are lifting heavier loads with wider radii under more extreme conditions and with greater mobility and versatility.

Environmentally friendly options are also on the rise. Yet the realistic goal for marine crane manufacturers is most often to simply find the right fit for the customer. Appropriately, the crane manufacturing industry is advancing in this way, offering sustainable machines and long-lasting value.

Custom Builds

Dario Ricci, CEO of Heila Cranes, says it’s a matter of knowing what’s relevant in the maritime industry, of being able to offer proven solutions to his customers. Heila competes with larger-sized crane manufacturers by having the expertise to personalize custom marine cranes, fitting them to a great variety of vessels (including yachts) across several maritime sectors.

Providing quality customization often means knowing what questions to ask of the customer and having the experience to notice opportunities and discrepancies while in the design phase. Fitting a crane to the park space of a vessel, meeting the needs of classification societies, knowing the trade-offs of a design model and taking into account protocols, servicing and revisions – there’s a lot more than just technology at play in the making of a custom-built crane.

Specifically, the telescopic knuckle boom crane is an area where Heila leads the market. Developed in 2018, the HLRM 1000-6S, a 70-ton foldable knuckle telescopic crane, boasts a rating of 1,000 tons per meter. Dario says this crane “will dramatically change the heavy-duty crane market. It’s equipped with a telescopic arm that can extend to a maximum radius of 30 meters. In a stored position, however, the crane requires only minimal space.”

Heila offers crane options from stock or with quick delivery in addition to its custom builds. The many types they manufacture include offshore cranes, lattice boom cranes and truck-mounted cranes. With input from customers, these cranes can be customized as to length, lifting capacity and sea-state working conditions.

Heila’s research, development and manufacturing are all located in Reggio Emilia, Italy, near Parma. Service branches are located in the Netherlands and Singapore, providing quality after-sales service. Commissioning, inspections, revisions and managing spare parts are all part of the Heila package, making it a leading crane manufacturer – proven solutions done right.

3D-Printed Crane Hooks

Netherlands-based Huisman is a household name in cranes, and lately it’s been innovating crane manufacturing with the use of 3D printing. The American Bureau of Shipping recently certified a 3D-printed, 36,000-kilogram crane hook from Huisman, and the Netherlands-based manufacturer has more scheduled for production.

For many, it’s a sensational thing to be able to 3D-print anything. While 3D-printable wrenches and screwdrivers might be considered a technological marvel, 3D-printed heavy machinery starts to feel like we’re living in a science fiction movie. Perhaps we’ll soon be building ships with 3D printing. Perhaps in the galley we’ll soon replace our cooks with 3D printers that can create hamburgers from seaweed.

Moreover, it often seems like the maritime industry is implementing technologies that have already been proven elsewhere. But in this case Huisman’s groundbreaking 3D crane hooks will be used offshore with the maritime industry setting the pace for innovation.

This particular 3D printing technology was developed by Cranfield University, located about 50 miles north of London. It’s called Wire Arch Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), and Huisman is using it to produce parts that are stronger than those made with traditional casting methods. The technology might be understood as a highly sophisticated application of the traditional use of wire feedstock to weld repairs.

It’s certainly interesting to think about the implications of being able to 3D-print heavy equipment. Costs for warehousing and logistics and the ways in which designs are sold and delivered are just a few aspects of how the industry could change with this technology. Let’s see what happens.

Huisman also recently contributed to the creating of a new world record. Two Huisman 10,000-ton revolving cranes, featured on the Heerema semi-submersible vessel Sleipnir, carried out the largest lift ever by a crane vessel. The Sleipnir broke the world record with a tandem lift of 15,300 tons, which was a single portion of the combined 24,000-ton topside installation for the Leviathan gas field off the coast of Israel. The 24,000-ton operation was completed in an amazing 20 hours.

Everything’s Bigger in Texas

Welcoming the challenge of exotic requests for custom crane manufacturing is ACE World Companies. The American company manufactures more than 85 percent of the components used in its machines – they even create their own software – and love it when a customer presents a challenge by asking, “Can it be done?”

Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, the old adage “Everything’s bigger in Texas” may be applicable to ACE’s founding principles. Established in 1987, the company’s vision was to differentiate itself from other American builders by specializing in the biggest and most complicated jobs, manufacturing the designs that no one else wanted to attempt.

Ace provides crane solutions internationally. For ports, it offers smooth-functioning Electric Overhead Traveling gantry cranes ranging from 10 to 400 tons. Providing solutions to industry demands, these machines are built to be quick and reliable in harsh conditions. Given its size and experience, ACE is able to serve many different industries with proven solutions.

German/Swiss Giant

Another household name in cranes is Liebherr, the Swiss-based company with German roots that makes some of the biggest cranes in the world. The numbers show Liebherr’s Mobile Harbor Cranes (MHCs) of various sizes are in high demand. Liebherr’s influence is far-reaching, and it’s involved in developing new port capabilities in places like inland India and Africa. Recent sales of its world’s largest MHC, the LHM 800, include ports in Qatar, Mexico, Italy and Uruguay.

In August, Liebherr inaugurated a TCC 78000, a streamlined new rail-mounted traveling gantry crane, at the port of Rostock, Germany. With a lifting capacity of 1,600 tons, the TCC 78000 is a heavy-duty crane and a heavy-duty investment for the port. Before the end of 2019, the Rostock TCC 78000 is expected to install an even more powerful Liebherr crane onto the bed of the Orion, a DEME 216.5-meter offshore installation vessel.

Bigger, Faster, Safer

In 2018 and 2019 crane manufactures broke several barriers, increasing lift capacities of telescopic and mobile cranes, setting a record for a lift by a crane vessel, implementing 3D-printed, heavy-duty equipment, and providing solutions in developing areas of the world – going bigger, faster and safer.

There was also the development of fiber line-using cranes, such as the MacGregor FirbreRope Off-Shore crane, which uses a Lankhorst fiber rope that is environmentally friendly in that it requires no greasing. This lightweight and neutral-buoyant fiber rope ultimately increases the lifting capacity of small vessels. There was also the continued development of all-electric cranes like the Liebherr LPS 420 E, which contributes to the feasibility of all-electric port facilities.

At this rate of innovation, perhaps I will one day be writing an article on marine cranes that feature heavy load-lifting laser beams and anti-gravity technology. In the meantime, here’s to the proven solutions that are safe and reliable as well economically and environmentally practical! – MarEx
