I have to say that I believe his backstory is alive. Until Larian says otherwise. Now this is a thought with EA infromation. The Ascension "mask off" reveals Astarion's inner, enhanced evil. Considering what the Astarion Magistrate was doing, it was similar. Arrogant, noble with power.

Act 1 Astarion Mirror scene

Astarion is quite narcissistic character (he has a point, the most handsome man in Faerun). Vampirism gives eternal youth, but demands too much in return. Yet Astarion describes the Vampire Lord's powers with admiration. It's hard to say how much Astarion wanted to be a vampire to get eternal life. I think he was considering the option. Cazador obviously sick of it. So he conjured Ascension and crafted 7k souls to feel alive again. The first Ascended Vampire is a cheat. The soul is not taken away. I wonder if Astarion Magistrate would appreciate the idea of becoming an Ascended Vampire.

If the sacrifice is from the ranks of criminals, gnomes, halflings - probably. If it's just low-status people, vagrants, people who are easy to get, but no crime, I don't know. It depends on how much Astarion cared about who was guilty and who wasn't when he was collecting food for the vampire clan.
