DOWNTOWN LA ARTWALK
by ShowzArt and SkidRobot
Self-proclaimed “art jedi” ShowzArt credits his mother with his passion for community and his father with his illustrative abilities. Moving to South Central Los Angeles with his family as a child ShowzArt was introduced to graffiti early on but soon traded spray cans for brushes. Actively working from the streets of Skid Row, Showzart has been a powerful voice for equal rights and services for all disenfranchised, no matter their background. Also raised in Los Angeles SkidRobot—founder of the Living Art Project—has been perhaps the most visible artistic voice addressing the city’s complex homelessness issues with his paintings of dream homes and beachscapes on the walls of Skid Row helping bridge the gulf between the “us” and the “them.” In early 2018 the two joined forces to paint this wall on S. Spring St for the Downtown LA ArtWalk. @_showzart_/ @skidrobot/

If the city has 1000’s of vacant lots why are they imposing on homeowners and communities to host affordable housing units. The city shouldn’t be Leaning on homeowners when they have plenty of real estate to work with! Don’t get me wrong it’s great that certain homeowners are willing to participate But these are the type of ideas that are going to really fix the problem. https://www.instagram.com/skidrobot/p/BxLZa-OBzKf/?igshid=a9eebnzwqe7p

Week 11: Visual Activism Art
Homelessness is an incredibly relevant issue and is becoming more concerning everyday. Through our research we have found a couple of artists who put visual activism into practice in their work. Maxwell Ruston was an artist Francesca came across last year on her facebook feed who really moved her and I thought he was a good inspiration for this assignment. Known for his most famous work Left Out, Ruston creates a social experimentation piece that forces the public to interact with it. Not only did Ruston make this sculpture but he then placed it on the streets of London where he filmed the public walking by. It was incredible the amount of reactions and non-reactions this artwork got. Because the work looked so realistic, some people went up to it, thinking it was a person to check whether they were okay because it was such a shocking thing to see. However, it was quite shocking to see the amount of people that chose to just walk past and ignore it. This goes to show how the homeless population are treated within our society. Another artist that Sian came across was Skid Robot, an anonymous graffiti artist based in Los Angeles who incorporates homeless people into his pieces. Robot creates frame like works around homeless people to create a kind of simple fantasy world which most humans have but homeless people are without. Not only does he create street art, he also does a lot of campaigning to help spread awareness about the growing population of homelessness in our world. When we looked at his work we found it especially powerful because it looks as though it could make a homeless person’s day just through some graffiti. Robot feels that through his art he is giving back to homeless people as best he can. Through visual activism, both of these artists involve either the public or the homeless population directly by create moving artworks that are a response to the issue of homelessness.

Caught up with Tosha recently and was in a nice surprise. She totally transformed the install into her own art gallery which she calls "Tosha's Perfect Imperfections" Please swipe right to check out some of the work she's been producing and if you'd like to help her out by picking up a piece you can visit her gallery off of 5th street in between Gladys and Stanford. She would surely appreciate anyone who came by to even take a look and say hello. Thanks y'all for the support! #skidrobot #artwillsavetheworld #dtla#skidrow#losangeles #streetphotography #streetart#artgallery

This is one of the earliest works that I produced, it was off of 6th and Wall during the dead of night. They were snoring heavily and with a bit of stealth I pulled it off without disturbing anyone... #skidrobot #lostfiles#bsides #dtla#skidrow#losangeles #losangelesgraffiti#streetshot #streetphotography#graffiti

#flashback to the original 3D art installation for the #birdman. It was the first piece of its kind and one of my most favored works of art. The art installation had a tremendous positive effect on Birdman and the community as a whole. It's a shame that these installations only last so long because they really do make a difference on the streets. Last year I had experimented with a few more around Skid Row and every installation brought an uplifting experience and energy to the environment. As an artist, it's my way of #givingback and at the same time raise awareness about a serious social illness we are dealing with on a national and global level. There have been a lot of ups and downs on this mission however I remain diligent and maintain my faith in the vision set out for this project. Currently the project is in need of storage space for more installations being planned for now and the next few months. If anyone has the space, hit me on the DM. Thanks to everyone who's stayed aboard for the ride, your support is deeply appreciated. -Skid Robot #skidrobot #savehumanity #artforchange #dtla#skidrow#echopark #streetart#streetphotography#thirdworldsociety #peopleoverprofit #losangeles#california (at Echo Park, C.A. 90026)

If a change in Los Angeles politics sounds good to you and you're ready for a positive transformation of our beloved city , then I need everyone reading this to follow @maier4mayor right now and spread the word to everyone you know to do the same. Repost, hashtag #youngbernie#maier4mayor I've worked with Michael on various projects and consider him a good friend and a strong ally in the war against homelessness in LA I support what he stands for and believe he is a great alternative to re electing Eric Garcetti who has yet to make good on his "state of emergency" promises and has swept the housing issue back under the rug. Michael Maier represents the change we need in Los Angeles and I'm asking everyone sincerely to give @maier4mayor a follow and share the campaign far and wide. We can bring the power back to the people, for the people! Stay tuned for further announcements! #skidrobot x #maier4mayor #savehumanity #savelosangeles #changeourcity #changetheworld #dtla#skidrow#losangeles
