Story summary: In the modern world of Toril, the existence of magic and devils and the like are believed to be relics of the distant past. But Wyll Ravengard knows all too well that these things still lurk in the corners of his own city, Baldur’s Gate, where he fights every day in the arena of the courtroom for his clients who have no one else by their side. One mundane morning, he meets one of his semi-regulars in lockup, Astarion Ancunín, a rare elf remaining in this world. What seems like one of Astarion’s usual street-level run-ins with the law explodes into something much more—something touching the highest levels of the city-state’s government and infernal planes beyond. Wyll struggles against the forces in and out of the system that wish to use Astarion, and at the same time contends with his own long-sleeping pact with a higher power which will lead him and Astarion on a journey far beyond the familiar confines of the Gate.

“Attorney Ravengard,” Zorr said shortly, not bothering with a greeting. “Ask your client if he’s willing to talk to me. He has information we want, and we’re willing to help him out if he helps us.”

Wyll blinked. Whipped around and stepped toward the wall as if he didn’t already have enough privacy in this completely empty hallway, twenty minutes before the courthouse closed. “What do you mean?” he asked quietly. “Why—why didn’t you say something yesterday?”

“Because things change quickly. I just got a hold of the detective I needed to confirm some things with. We have good reason to believe Ancunín has information on missing persons. A lot of them.”

“What?” Wyll blurted. “Do you mean… human trafficking?”

“No,” said Zorr flatly. “People taken and never seen again, to be blunt.”

Wyll’s face knit in confusion. Drugs, prostitution—these he might have expected Astarion to have some knowledge of. Smuggling, even. But… dead bodies? “That’s absurd,” Wyll said. “Are you trying to say he, or his employer or whoever, are involved in some kind of—of serial killing?”

“Thought you had been in this job long enough to know reality is often absurd, Attorney Ravengard.”
