near-drowning is such a good whump trope, not just on its own but also for what comes after
convulsive coughing or vomiting water after being pulled out
violent shivering and/or hypothermia (or concern about potential hypothermia)
bruised or cracked ribs from CPR
rapid breathing and heart-rate for hours afterwards, even if their body is tired and achy
Exhaustion and chest pain - they're limp, lethargic, but still needy for touch and comfort
Chest infections settling in their lungs from the cold and the dirty water they inhaled
Lingering trauma about the event- nightmares of sinking, panic attacks in darkness, nervousness around water, claustrophobia

Whump Prompt #1086
Anon asked:
Need me some prompts for a really happy-go-lucky character who hides their traumas behind a witty remark and a cocky smile
Happy go-lucky is a trope I’ve modelled an OC on so:
Nothing appears to phase the character at first: even when it really should.
When the Worst Stuff is revealed about their past, everyone is sat in horrified shock except your character, who passes the whole thing off as a funny story. The character shrugs and says ‘and I’m still alive so… I’ll drink to that.’
The ‘it is what it is’ mentality. Someone is mean to them? They’ve heard worse. They’re injured? ‘Not as bad as the last time.’ They’ve just witnessed something horrific? ‘Eh, at least no-one died in my arms this time.’
They’ve learnt to craft their backstory into something more humorous to reduce the impact it has on other people.
“Hahah, well actually I’ve dealt with this before. It’s a funny story really, I was nearly executed for…”
Maybe one day they can’t hold it in anymore. That One Thing is enough to push them over the edge. Maybe they drink, maybe they do something else self destructive and it all comes out. There’s no cocky smile, there’s no joke; your character is being 100% real and It’s jarring for the caretakers… but also a relief that the trauma is finally being addressed.

A's fever is through the roof. They are sleepy, dazed, and in so much pain. They can do nothing but shiver violently under their blankets, burning up yet chilled to the bone.
B keeps pressing cold washcloths to A's head, whispering sweet nothings and trying to comfort A through their hallucinations.
C keeps going back and forth, bringing ice and cold water and doing their best to assist B, looking incredibly worried.
A is shivering so much that they start getting painful cramps, and tears start rolling down their flaming cheeks.
B turns to C, in a hushed whisper. "I think it's time to call the doctor. Fever's getting out of control."
C just nods, darting out of the room with their heart breaking for poor A.

Whump Prompt #1082
Submitted by @jaybol-iiiii - thanks! And welcome back to Tumblr, its good to see you again, friend!
Non-human characters with unfamiliar characteristics and their human/oid caretakers that have never been informed about said characteristics.
Bonus points for caretakers having to figure it out themselves.
I love this trope. Especially if they get worse before they get better!

Whumpee’s drifting in and out of consciousness, every time in a different mood than the last. Sometimes they’re too exhausted to move; other times they cry and panic; occasionally they just quietly look around trying to remember what happened, where they are, and how they got there.
-And then they remember.

a really obscure and tiny detail I’m weak for: someone chafing/rubbing their arms to warm up:
it’s vulnerable af. sure, you could just cross your arms, but it’s the visible detail of trying to get warmer and letting everyone else know “hi okay I’m cold”
when they’re wrapped in a blanket and rub their arms over the blanket because they’re just not quite warm enough
when they’re next to a fire and they can feel the heat but they can’t quite feel the warmth in their bones, so they use the extra friction to jumpstart the process
trying to chase away the goosebumps that keep cascading across their skin
when they’re cold and scared and rub their arms to self soothe and calm down
when someone else sees someone trying to get warm and takes over for them, hugging them from behind and rubbing their shoulders

the world seems to fade in and out, blood rushing through their ears drowning out the voices around them. it hurts- is all whumpee can think, the pain is setting their body alight and sending stars to dance before their eyes. they’re confused and scared, the world too big and loud for their semi conscious brain to comprehend.
but then, arms are wrapping around their fragile body, settling the shakes that ravage their frame. they panic at first, weakly fighting against whatever new torture this is; but then they hear it, the soft lull of caretaker’s voice. a hand cards through their hair and the rumble of caretakers chest is welcoming as they press against it.
the world is slipping through their fingers now, and whumpee lets their consciousness fade away as they weakly grip onto the back of caretaker’s shirt.

You know what I love? When characters wake up to a cold cloth being applied to their forehead.
Maybe they've been in and out of a fever for a while now, blinking through their blurred vision and trying to make out the confused faces and voices around them as some concerned person dabs at their face.
Maybe they had a horrible fever that has now broken, and when they wake up their head is clear again but they're so weak and achy and covered in cold sweat with a now lukewarm compress draped across their head that it takes them a minute to notice.
Maybe they wake up from a nightmare thrashing and gasping and crying out, and somebody at their side already shushing them gently and trying to calm them, sponging sweat from their forehead as they do so.
So many options.

I love the idea of a tough character finally crying in front of others and it's nothing like what people expect. Like everyone expected soft, discrete whimpers but what they get is loud, gasping, obnoxious wailing. Perfection.

Whumpee is kept in a cage that’s far too small for them—they have to hold completely still and tense to avoid brushing the bars. This wouldn’t be an issue if the bars weren’t electrified. Any lapse in attention or drift into drowsiness is met with agony. Whumpee can barely feel their muscles anymore, and they haven’t slept in days.

picture your whumpee huddled in bed, covered in blankets, trying to warm up after a long day getting soaked to the skin in the cold rain.
they’ve been indoors and in dry clothes for hours now, but they still can’t shake the icy cold in their bones. no matter how many layers they curl up under, they still feel chilled and shivery. They cinch the blankets to their chin, feeling the goosebumps prickle on their arms and rubbing at them weakly.
when caretaker comes in to check on them, whumpee pitifully asks them to lay with them for a bit and warm them up. caretaker obliges, curling their warm body around whumpee’s shivering one, holding them until the chills subside into sleep.

an idea: character who has 0 sense of their own wellbeing, so when they're starting to feel unwell, they wait for it to pass (=spend hours with a growing headache because they're not sure if there's actually something wrong or they just had a too strong coffee or something), and eventually decide they're gonna be an adult about it and casually admit they're not feeling that well - just when their body has Had Enough and Succumbs (eg. they faint). worried companions ask them why they hadn't mentioned anything and the character goes "I DIDN'T KNOW"
I LOVE IT<3
i feel like we always see whumpees who very consciously try to hide their illness (which i also love), but it's such a fun twist when they genuinely realize "oh shoot i'm sick" but they're already too far gone to take care of themselves and have to rely on everyone else

Turns out, unsurprisingly, that lack of follow-up/care is a pretty universally hated thing! Since we have now established that it is the Worst, I'm curious what other whump sin people really can't stand-- before the writers have the chance to fade to black, put in a time jump, or otherwise forget the whump ever happened.

okay I know I just reblogged something about this but there is something just so gut wrenching about a whumpee who is absolutely flattened by illness. like, we’re talking so achy they can’t move, let alone get out of bed, so feverish and delirious that they can’t string a sentence together, so miserable that they can’t do more than stare up at the caretaker with a glassy, half-lidded glance, hoping that they’re able to intuit their needs so they don’t have to force their words through their burning throat. everything’s heavy, and blurry, and just off enough to make panic twist in their gut, but they’d be too sluggish to flee these percieved threats anyways. so they stay under their mountain of blankets and covers, praying one thing over and over to caretaker: don’t leave. please don’t leave.

Another hurt/comfort aesthetic: half-closed eyes
Feverish from an infected injury, with glazed eyes rolling erratically under half-closed lids; they’re semi-conscious and barely coherent, moaning softly in pain, limbs writhing weakly, and they only quiet when Caretaker holds their hand / strokes their forehead / cradles their head in their lap.
Eyes narrowed, head bowed and shoulders hunched against the driving rain/snow, barely able to make out the way in front of them as they constantly blink precipitation out of their eyes, stumbling with pain/fatigue as they flee from danger or seek out safety/shelter.
Sinking down into the chair, letting their head fall back and their eyelids drift downwards and all the tension in their body melt away, just enjoying being warm and dry and safe after a harrowing journey or a difficult mission.
Exhausted caretaker who has stayed at whumpee’s side all night listening anxiously for each rasping breath, watching each shallow rise and fall of their torn and bloody chest; again and again caretaker feels their eyelids start to close and their head start to droop but each time they jerk themself awake…
