Forgot to post this yesterday, but here’s my Inktober piece for this week! It’s based on one of my best friends, who is a high school math teacher. We were both math majors in college, and she would always help me out with my num theory proofs. The world definitely needs more amazing math teachers like her, so that more students (particularly girls) can see how awesome math really is! (Seriously though, math gets a bad rep.) Also, not exactly high school math in there, but I wanted to incorporate some geometry and topology since she did her thesis on non-Euclidean 3-manifolds. So cool!
Anyway, it was super rainy outside yesterday, so it was nice to spend the day indoors drawing!

Week 2 of Inktober! For my ink piece this week, I focused on the ‘S’ in STEM this time with astronaut Mae Jemison! Jemison was the first African-American woman in space, and is a huge proponent of getting more minorities students involved with science. Among her various accolades, she holds nine honorary doctorates in science, engineering, letters, and humanities. Role model, much?

Happy first day of Inktober!! Unfortunately I’m not on vacation like last year, so I’m going to aim for one drawing a week rather than one a day. I decided to try out a theme this year! Inspired by Anna Cattish’s “girls” theme, I’m going to do portraits of females, only with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics theme) twist.
This first one’s a personal portrait, and it's on the type of girl I know best: the computer science girl. For some backstory, last year I graduated from a Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) graduate program where it was about 25% female, which is actually considered to be pretty high for CSE compared to the national average. And now I’m currently the only female iOS engineer at my company, out of about 25-30 iOS engineers. Sometimes it’s rough. I don’t always fit in and I often feel like I need to prove myself when I shouldn’t have to. But I love coding, it’s 100x more rewarding than it is frustrating (most days ;)) and I hope someday soon more girls can feel the same enjoyment that I do without having to deal with the same gender imbalance.
Anyway, went and picked up a few new ink pens this morning. I still suck at drawing hands (and the clothing ended up as an inky mess), but overall feel like I’ve learned a thing or two from last year! Happy Inktober everyone!
p.s. Yes, that’s actual Swift code in the background... but I wouldn’t try executing it :P

Because a Pokémon themed garden is what every 90's kid hoped to someday have.... Am I right?? :D

I wanna be the very best Like no one ever was To plant them is my real test To grow them is my cause
I will travel across the land Searching far and wide Each plantémon seed to understand The power that’s inside
Plantémon! Gotta grow ‘em all! It’s you and me I know it’s my destiny, Plantémon! Oh you’re my best friend In a garden we must defend Plantémon! A root so true Our courage will pull us through,
You feed me and I’ll water you, Plantémon! Gotta grow 'em all
Every pest along the way With courage I will face. I will weed every day To claim my rightful place. Come with me, The time is right, There’s no better team. Arm in root we’ll win the fight! It’s always been our dream!

Spent the day visiting some of my favorite places in Seattle today, ending in my old haunt Chocolati. @chrislamart and I used to have lots of old drawing/coding sessions here, so figured it was an appropriate place to do my ink drawing for today :)
