Prologue: The Red King
Wonderland is a strange place. It is what remains of the world after it perished. Before, there was life. Now there is no time, no space, no anything; Just the game that was invented in the first few moments of chaos to stop people from going mad. This obviously failed, because the game is no longer a game. It has become something more - a reckless, cruel war, designed to keep people entertained.
We call it chess and the rules are simple. The White chess players attack the Red chess players, with methods as strange and brutal as the people themselves. They fight and lie and kill, until the game ends when one of the kings is, at last, dead. Not many believe it will ever be over, though.
It's been like this for as long as anyone can recall. No one remembers the past or the life we had - except me and the White King. We are both aware that one of us must die, or else risk destroying what remains of humanity.
I’m interrupted from my thoughts as my Bishop comes in with the evening report.
“The evening report, Your Majesty,” he drawls. “The white troops have advanced further into our land, and we have lost many Knights at battle. There is an uprising amongst the Pawns and-”
“Send out more players to the battlefield and a Bishop to settle the riots,” I say, with a small sigh. The evening report is always the same, messengers repeating the dreary, hopeless news of things that happen every single day. The incoming advancements barely even worry me anymore; I have become more dull to violence with every battle that is fought.
“Your Majesty - there is also the matter of some prisoners from the White troops to be dealt with,” the Bishop adds, looking unusually troubled.
“Well you know what to do with them - execute them! You should be used to this by now,” I scold, frowning.
“I beg your pardon, Your Majesty, but these particular prisoners are of a most peculiar nature,” he responds.
“Peculiar? What could possibly be of interest to me about a couple of disgusting Whites,” I say, sighing again. “Now be on your way.”
The Bishop shuffles his feet in a most irritating manner. “Well, Your Majesty, these prisoners - well, they turned themselves in, and it is stated that only captured prisoners are to be executed.”
I stare at him, stunned. Who in their right minds would actually turn themselves in? These people must be insane. Why else would they do such an outrageous and unheard of thing? Although, of course, everyone in Wonderland is insane. Still, this is a strange thing, even for Wonderland.
“Who are the prisoners?” I ask, still confused.
“Well, there are six of them, Your Highness,” he replies. “They are the three most famous assassins who work for the White King; a spy, a thief, and, if I may say, the most intriguing of the lot, the White King’s youngest son. They are currently in the dungeons.”
I tap my fingers against the ornately carved oak of my throne I am sat upon, and consider this situation. There is nothing in the rules that describe what would happen if players choose to turn themselves in - it is such an unforeseeable circumstance - but I can’t just let a gang of criminals and my enemy’s son walk free!
“Bring them to me,” I tell him, heaving one last sigh.
I think I have finally found the solution to end this brutal game of chess. One King must die, and for once, I am certain that it will not be me. All it takes is a little betrayal to set us all free.
