i know we talk a lot about all the ways kevin is similar to wymack (eyes, stance, attitude) but what about the ways his other kids resemble him, too.

what about how wymack and dan share a favorite diner, have the same preset radio stations, how they will unwittingly show up to practices in matching jorts-and-tank outfits. how they both look on this team with the same eyes, the same resilience.

what about how both wymack and andrew smell like cigarettes and whiskey, and how they both manage to be fiercly protective while coming across as aloof and uninvasive.

what about how wymack and matt are both protective of their group while at the same time being the person to invite new people into it. that they share eyes that sense loneliness, and the heart to heal it.

what about how wymack and aaron both clench their eyes shut for a second and let out a long-suffering sigh instead of rolling them when they’re annoyed.

what about how wymack and seth both shared the same self-satisfied smirk after every game won, or how their undecipherable angry grumbling could be mistaken as the same voice.

what about how wymack and allison share the same curl of their brow when they think they’re seeing the signs of something more. how they will both say it’s none of their business but can’t help but look closer.

what about how wymack and nicky both settle for ruffling people’s hair as an expression of affection and how they both count their company silently with a sweeping look, as if to making sure no one has disappeared between one blink and the next.

what about how wymack and renee share the same hope and optimism, despite the teeth clenched and the sweat on their brow and the grime and blood under their fingernails.

what about how wymack and neil never give up, how they step into the court and feel the same sense of belonging. but also, feeling the same belonging while looking at their loved ones.

and it’s not until he’s gone that they realize how in that particular fast food place, they will always expect to see him returning with their trays, or how a particular shirt will forever remain the shirt they wore when he first told them he was proud of them. and they will never step off a court and not, for a split second, expect his large hand to land on their shoulders for a quick squeeze of support. no matter if they had parental figures before joining the foxes, they had one when they left.

If people in the AFTG fandom think what Nicky did in the Foxhole Court was irredeemable and hate him for that, they should also think Andrew is irredeemable too

Because he orchestrated Nicky drugging Neil. He was the one who asked Nicky to do it

If they're blaming Nicky for it, they should hold Andrew to the same level of account as Nicky

I'll get around to writing this fic at some point, but:

Jean and Jeremy get photographed kissing and it's all over the news. It's a problem for both of them because of their pasts, with Jean stressed because he got caught wanting a man and Jeremy stressed because of pressure from his family and because this reminds him of the banquet. The media is vicious, because they're the first confirmed-gay Exy players (Andreil does no PDA, Cat and Laila are obviously Just Good Friends, and I guarantee the 2007 press misgenders Cody).

They keep saying that gay players are ruining Exy, that they should be kicked off the team, that the founders of Exy would be horrified, etc.

And who should read all this bullshit but Kevin Day? Kevin "it'll be easier if he remains heterosexual" Day, who is now watching reporters bully the man he failed all his life and the man he has always idolized. Kevin Day, who is watching bigot online say that his mother would be ashamed of having gay people play Exy, like Kevin himself isn't bisexual.

It's the last straw.

So when they play the Trojans, Kevin decides to make a point. I imagine this is Neil's sophomore year, so the Foxes scraped past the Winter Banquet by the skin of their teeth but everyone knows they won't make it more than a match or two into the spring season. And they just happen to be up against the Trojans as one of their first games of the spring semester.

So a reporter gets to Kevin before the game to ask him about the new scandal and, thinking Kevin will be supportive, says something like, "don't you think Exy would be better if there were no gay players?"

And because Kevin is a diva and a drama queen, he says, "I'll answer that after the game." And he walks off.

He goes to the locker room and he asks Wymack if they've gotten their line-up to the Trojans yet. Wymack says no. And Kevin says, "Good. Take Neil, Andrew, Nicky, and I off."

Everyone looks at him like he's insane. The whole locker room goes quiet.

Neil asks if Kevin is joking.

Kevin looks at Andrew. "A reporter out there thinks Exy would be better without gay players. So I thought we should let him see what that looks like."

And then while Kevin and Andrew are having a moment of dramatic eye contact and understanding, because Kevin is finally prioritizing protecting his loved ones above Exy, chaos erupts.

(Mostly it's Nicky loudly asking why no one ever tells him they're gay).

Kevin hands the line-up to Jeremy and it's a mirror image of the year before, one team sacrificing a chance at victory for a greater cause.

Kevin Day, for the first time since his hand healed, does not play a single minute on the court the entire game.

Neither do Neil, Andrew, or Nicky.

The Trojans win.

At the end of the game, Kevin finds the reporter, in a sea of other reporters trying to ask post-match questions. They're al asking if Kevin's hand hurts, if the Foxes are ill, and what the hell happened that most of the best starters didn't play.

Kevin, in a speech that Neil would be proud of, says that he heard Exy would be better without queer players. So they all sat out, since they weren't wanted.

The reporters go quiet.

Kevin goes on about how Exy has always been a co-ed sport. It's always been welcoming to everyone. How the Foxes, started by Kevin's father, have always been about making sure everyone gets a chance to play. How the Trojans, perpetual winners of the Kayleigh Day Spirit Award, have always stood by their queer teammates. How last year's winners (the Foxes) and this year's future winners (the Trojans, Kevin is calling it a half-season in advance) wouldn't be half the teams they were without the queer players on them. And how Kevin can't believe the reporters dare insinuate that Kayleigh Day wouldn't want her own son playing Exy because he might taint the sport by being queer.

It's the most massive thing Kevin's ever done. Bigger than saying Wymack is his dad. Bigger than "I've never been skiing." Bigger than getting the two on his cheek covered up.

Because Exy is the Queen's game. Kayleigh and Tetsuji and Riko are all gone and only Kevin can now define what Exy is and what it was meant to be.

He's found his spine and decided that he's going to use it to fight for his right, and the right of those like him, to play Exy. He's going to fight for Andrew and Neil, who fought for him. He's going to fight to Jeremy, who embodies the spirit of Kayleigh Day's Exy better than anyone Kevin's ever met and who was the only sunshine he ever saw in the Nest. And he's going to fight for Jean, who he never fought for before but he never wants to let down again.

In 2007, with no out players in the sport and his entire career ahead of him, Kevin Day decides to come out, gambling that the world loves him more than they hate gay people, deciding that he loves his friends and his spine more than his spotless reputation.

And he's right.

Neil's books wrenched my heart, but god, Jean's were devastating.

there is something about a character who doesn't want to live soldiering on anyway and finding a life worth living has grown around them. who has been broken and abused being treated gently and loved for the first time. It's the way he conceives he didn't deserve to be hurt because the idea of hurting his friends around him makes him sick. It's him holding back his aggression and forcing patience teaching the drills and thinking of Tanner in his list of brothers. It's the way he returns Cat and Laila's easy affection.

It's how he grits his teeth again and again until he breaks down in his coach's arms and adds "Fathers." to his reasons for staying alive. It's "Did you think you were special?" and his baby sister is gone and he has to live for them both. It's "So was Elodie." and "Your parents threw you away, too." and "If he's going to be a Moreau, you have to teach him french." It's the space he gives Jeremy about his family and the unwavering acceptance to his teammates. It's "I don't care what they think of me." but when the west coast teams like him following the banquet it feels like breathing for the first time.

it's the horrors he's endured and the tenderness that still beats in his heart underneath the scared tissue. Jean Moreau man of all time. I love him so much

It is not bi/homophobic in the year 2006 of all times to admit or say “hey, as a college athlete on track to go pro, it’s so much easier if everyone thinks you’re a straight jock”

Kevin and Jeremy KNOW THIS. As the two most media-trained, they KNOW. It would be easier for Andreil if the public never knows. If Jean was equally in love with an Elle Woods and a Jeremy Knox, it WOULD be easier if he chose Elle woods. Jeremy and Kevin being aware of societal homophobia is not biphobic or homophobic.

Jeremy doesn’t fully realize that Jean doesn’t want someone else, so yes he is worried because he’s INSECURE. He’s afraid Jean would never choose him for a variety of reasons, this is just one flavor.

2. (On speaker phone)

Neil: Kevin is drunk again...

You see Wymack exhale slowly through his nose. Eyes full of fury and exhaustion.

Wymack: (pulls the cigarette from his mouth) He’s in a park in where, Neil?

Neil: Downtown. Near that fountain with the horse statue. He’s arguing with a pigeon.

Wymack: Get him home. God damn. And don’t let him out of your sight until he’s sober or unconscious. Whichever comes first.

Neil: Would it help if I said he only had half a bottle this time?

Wymack: Neil, I swear to God, if I have to bail out one more Fox this month, I’m gonna start charging you rent at the precinct.

He hangs up, sighs heavily, and stares at you.

Wymack: "Who are we missing from the dorms?"

You (trying not to panic): Um. Neil. Nicky. Andrew. Renee. Kevin. Aaron. Also, one of them asked where to buy five cans of spray paint and how to collect dog shit... for reasons, sir.

Wymack slowly exhales, takes out his cigarette, and points it like a weapon.

Wymack: If anyone asks... they were here all day. I just got a call about someone vandalizing a church. A church that belongs to Luther Hemmick. I’m going to die of a stress aneurysm before playoffs.

5. "KEVIN, I SWEAR TO-" "I don’t give a damn who started it!" "You do not launch a bag of oranges at Nicky just because he said your form looked off!" "I will bench you, Kevin. I don’t care if we’re playing the Ravens and you’re our only sober striker. I’ll sit your ass so fast you’ll bounce off and head sticking off the roof!" "Try me!" (Hangs up.)
