2017 Jan. 25: And there we are -- President Trump signed two executive orders on immigration; one that directs federal agencies to begin construction of a wall on the border with Mexico and to end the "catch and release" policy; the other placing a monthlong ban on allowing any person into the United States from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen.
For the record, the picture of Trump with a a Henry repeating rifle was shot in July 2015 at a dinner of the Republican Party in Hot Springs, Arkansas; the road sign is authentic and can be seen, for instance, on Highway I-5 within San Diego County, California

2017 Jan. 9: Two years from today, a few hours before Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, Amedy Coulibaly, who had pledged allegiance to Daesh, attacks the people in a Hypercacher kosher food superette at Porte de Vincennes in east Paris. The day after he killed police officer Clarissa Jean-Philippe in Montrouge, he kills four people, all of whom are Jews, Philippe Braham, Yohan Cohen, Yoav Hattab and François-Michel Saada, and take several hostages. These men are to be added to the list of people killed by terrorists in France for being Jewish. After the assault of Charlie Hebdo, Jews are once more targeted in France. At the same time, the 2 gunmen of Charlie, the Kouachi brothers, take refuge in a printing house north of Paris. Coulibaly demands that the Kouachi brothers not be harmed. A few minutes after the Kouachi borthers try to escape their shelter and are killed by police, BRI forces (SWAT), helped by a Malian shop assistant, Lassana Bathily, launch an attack on the supermarket and kill Coulibaly. From this day on, Jews of France live under the protection of heavily armed forces.

As a background, a French flag and a detail from a painting by Henri-Paul Motte, "Richelieu sur la digue de La Rochelle" (1881).
