Moniek Darge / Vanessa Rossetto — Dream Soundies (Erstwhile)

Belgian Moniek Darge and American Vanessa Rossetto, are sound artists who work primarily with collected sounds. Each sources their material from a practice of recording everyday environments, but since their respective days are as different as their emotional orientations, their respective works are different. Darge has traveled the world, often seeking out what she finds to be sacred. Rossetto has spent her life in a small number of American cities, and her personal struggles tend to get folded into her work; she once made an album that dealt primarily with the sounds of a hotel room that she had trouble navigating and the limited distance that she could move when she escaped it.
Their differences prove to be complementary on Dream Soundies (Darge applies the word “soundies” to her audio productions, using the diminutive term to escape the limits of music). Together, these two women who are accustomed to working with anything at hand turn a selection of regular sounds into a soundtrack that is simultaneously ineffable and ordinary. It’s definitely a soundtrack, since sounds often deploy in a cinematic fashion. Loops create continuity, and the arrival of each new element — a chirping bird, a slammed door, a banging disco party, a distant hum that might be a car engine — advances the action as purposefully as the introduction of a new character or visual perspective moves a film along. But these action sequences do not add up to a narrative. Why should they? Sounds were around for a long time before stories, and their vibrations will surely persist much longer than story-bound humans are likely to last.
One might as easily turn to painting to metaphorically describe Dream Soundies. Each moment is layered with sounds, like a thick crust of oils applied to canvas over a span of time. Sirens wail and critters cluck, church bells toll and lesser metals clatter, flutes call and respond and harmonize in compatible disregard with music boxes and ducks. And just as a painter stops at just enough paint (or at least refuses to show you the works where they didn’t stop at the right time), even the densest moments of Dream Soundies are never overloaded. That’s what separates this work from, saying, opening the windows and turning on the TV and radio at the same time; it is arranged, and even if you can’t grasp the rules governing its arrangement, it resonates because of them.

Catherine Lamb and Johnny Chang — Viola Torros (Another Timbre)

youtube
Viola Torres is a work of mystification. According to an interview on the Another Timbre website, it grew out of a recurring conversation between Berlin-based violists and composers Catherine Lamb and Johnny Chang about the work of a composer named Viola Torros. The musicians share an insider’s skepticism about core assumptions and practices of classical music. Both believe in giving musicians the opportunity to provide not just instrumental skill but creative input. While little is known of Torros beyond reports that she was born in the Indus valley during late Vedic age (c. 500 BC) and was sighted in different locations across India, Europe, and points in between, Lamb and Chang grew their discussion into a body of work that has been recorded for this album and performed around Europe and the United Kingdom.

Dead Kennedys — DK40 (Manifesto Records)
youtube
The “40” in DK40 refers to the fact that it’s been 40 years since Dead Kennedys released their first record, a 7 inch, “California Über Alles” b/w “Man with the Dogs.” For punks of a certain age (ahem), that’s a positively gob-smacking number and historical fact. But it’s so; Dead Kennedys have been putting out records for four decades, and they’ve been a band for a bit longer than that. Of course, given the events of the last 20 years, “been a band” begs any number of questions. Foremost among them is: Can you have Dead Kennedys without Jello Biafra? DK40 neatly sidesteps that question, observing the anniversary by focusing on two years in the 1980s during which the band was at the top of its game, with Biafra firmly installed as front man, resident big mouth and provocateur. Listeners will have to decide if that’s the best way to engage the complexity of those 40 years, full of innovative punk rock, criminal and civil court proceedings and very, very public recrimination and dispute.

Bill Meyer: Year In Review 2017

Dusted’s writers bid 2016 farewell with a mixture of sadness and revulsion. We grieved the many great musicians who died, but the sense that the countries we live in were collectively embracing paths that might make us mourn the toppling of fundamental principals weighed even heavier. And 2017 has shown that our dismay was not misplaced. There’s no need to recount the shit show of USA politics here, except to say that it’s fucking embarrassing to know that a sizable portion of your country is swallowing scams so transparent that if your teenager pulled that crap on you, you’d ground them an extra week just for thinking you were that dumb. But while compassion, justice, and reality contact seem to have gone out the window, I’ve never found music more sustaining. So let’s talk about what gives a guy hope.

Listening Post: The Fall Singles Box Set

Over nearly four decades, 32 studio albums, around a dozen labels and a dizzying array of line-ups, the Fall has been a source of endless fascination, amusement, irritation, astonishment and enjoyment to a healthy minority of Dusted writers. Centered around the irascible, unpredictable, absolutely inimitable Mark E. Smith, the Fall has been churning out singles since most of us started buying them, and, unlike other youthful obsessions, continues to do so, right up to the current moment. So, when we heard that Cherry Red was putting out a massive seven-disc, 117-track singles collection, we were intrigued. We were also a little daunted. We decided to listen to it together, or at least at the same time, as much as we could, and talk about it in this listening post. As usual, some of us were long-time fans, others were new to the Fall and a couple were, shall we say, not convinced. Contributors included Jennifer Kelly, Bill Meyer, Justin Cober-Lake, Ben Donnelly, Ian Mathers, Mason Jones, Michael Rosenstein and Marc Medwin.

Joe McPhee – The Willisau Concert (Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey)

youtube
Numerous are the musicians who adopt the DIY tack and launch record labels to document their work. Relatively few are those that can claim an enterprise founded by others with the express purpose of releasing their music. Joe McPhee holds that latter distinction thanks to Werner X Uehlinger and the Hat Hut imprint. Up to 1975, McPhee had been dividing his time between occasional teaching engagements at Vassar College and a day gig at a factory in his hometown of Poughkeepsie, NY, fitting music into the time between and off from both. The Willisau Concert, Uehlinger’s second release on his fledgling label, documents an eponymous Swiss leg of a European tour undertaken by McPhee and his colleague John Synder in the fall of that year. South African drummer Makaya Ntshoko joined the group, but the chemistry between the three players was apparently off leading to a truncating of the tour soon after.

V India hraje na kytaru Tomáš Kopáček (Black Tar Jesus, Tempelhof, Latviri...) a svoji už tak legendární kytarovou hru po odchodu do Budějic přetransformoval na úroveň monstrum a k sobě si přibral dva (skoro) lokální klasiky: Sokola (Nuly, Microvomit...) a Bejbiše (DAT, Benelux, Kidney Trauma...). S repetitivním kytarovým zvukem u nás pracuje málokdo lépe než právě India, energická intenzivní nálož ale opouští hranice žánru a je schopná zaujmout širší nezávislou posluchačskou scénu. September 15th 2017 / Praha, Husova 18, Brno, Czech Republic / 8pm
Jéromé Noetinger & Aude Romary Jérôme Noetinger is one of the driving forces in the French experimental music scene. He is a member of Cellule D’Intervention Metamkine (a group that manipulates image and sound via 16 mm projectors), he asserts himself both solo and in collaborations (Lionel Marchetti, Michel Chion, Kevin Drumm ...) with field recordings, feedback & tape recorders, he writes for French magazine Revue et corrigée and he manages Metamkine (a record label and international distributor of experimental music). He has been working with experimental French cellist Aude Romary since 2014, a collaboration that was documented on the brilliant CD Discordes (Centre Culturel André Malraux, 2017). Cello, tape recorders, microphones & loudspeakers are the musical weapons of choice with which Noetinger and Romary allow a surprising electro-acoustic world of sound to bloom. https://vimeo.com/105279691 Laundry Room Squelchers Franka „Rat Bastard” Falestra aka Miami's Godfather of Noise and his co. In the early 1980s Falestra co-founded a recording studio in North Miami Beach, Florida which existed under different names and locations for nearly twenty years. Nuly (NAAB, CZ) - Trencin - Klub luc - 21/6/2017

Nuly = jedinci bez väčších schopností k niečomu, ale so snahou o niečo a nakoniec nič ... Žáner: Sad-pop/Alternative (soulnoise) Rodné mesto: České Budějovice / Čakov Nahrávacia společnosť: Noise Assault Agency Budweis Veľmi svojrazná a osobitná kapela brázdi už dlhšiu dobu v tomto rybníku. Nuly sú teraz v bezprostrednom hľadáčiku milovníkov gitaroviek a nevšedných textov. Nuly vzišli z kapely d'Mixomatóza, kde sa prvý krát stretli Jakub (gitara a spev) so Sokolom (basa).

V rámci svojho európskeho turné nazvaného Ghosts príde do trenčianského klubu Lúč talianska partia Kill Your Boyfriend a predstaví tu svôj nový, rovnako nazvaný album. Duo KYB vzniklo v roku 2011 a tvoria ho Matteo Scarpa a Antonio Angeli z talianskeho Trevisa. Ich hudba je brilantne vyváženou zmesou postpunku, dark wave, garage rocku a shoegaze. Muzika KYB osloví fanúšikov kapiel ako Joy Division, M!R!M alebo napríklad Indian Jewelry. Posledný album Ghosts vyšiel koncom roka 2016 na nezávislej značke Shyrec Records, po boku kapiel ako Diplomatics, Wora Wora Washington, The Giant Undertow či ďalších nezávislých zoskupení. Album Ghosts nadväzuje na ich predchádzajúci, úspešný počin The King Is Dead z roku 2015. Jedna zaujímavosť súvisiaca s názvom kapely Kill Your Boyfriend - jednotlivé pesničky na predchádzajúcich albumoch nesú rôzne mužské mená (Rudolph, Frank, Alan...).
