Yup!! You summarized it perfectly! I don't doubt that Yang raised Ruby, at least for some period (do people actually doubt this? It is pretty much stated point-blank in the show). Was that healthy? I suppose that is a matter of relativity. The short answer is heck no, but infinitely better than the alternative.
They saved each other, maybe literally for Ruby but at least emotionally for both. They grew so much closer as a result. But it also took a serious toll on both of them. Being forced to be a parent when still just a kid yourself is not just a hypothetical, it happens all the time in real life and imposes all sorts of psychological stress (or distress when it becomes too overwhelming) on both individuals.
Yang never got to be a kid really. Ruby was Yang's whole world before v1 and continued to be an inseparable part of her life (along with Blake of course) throughout the story.
But there is also her desire to find out more about herself. It is uncertain how much of a childhood Yang had, but she doesn't want to miss out on her early adulthood. So her behavior in v1 makes sense to me.
Anyways, if anyone is interested, there is an amazing AU that explores this in far better detail than I could ever articulate. I would highly recommend it!

do you think Ruby and Yang's relationship is codependent? Maybe I am using that word wrong but I just feel like, throughout their lives, and especially before the Fall of Beacon they just lived orbiting each other and living for each other to a level that might be considered unhealthy idk.
I just really like your analysis/interpretation of their relationship so... thoughts???
Is water wet? Yeah they’re SO codependent they’re lives revolve around each other
They have been with each other for SOOOOO LONGGGGGG
even if you don’t really believe in yang raising Ruby because of their father being a victim of “depressed because my wife died and I also have to raise two children alone and I’m overwhelmed” which happens, it sucks but it happens
They’re still VERY close and yang is the older sister and that’s what HAPPENSSSS
That’s what I love about ice queendom (im pretty sure I haven’t totally finished it yet so no spoilers) they acknowledge that relationship they have really well (in the beginning with yangs convo with their dad, and also just in how yang acts about Ruby’s plans and actions)
Personal I believe as reliant as Ruby probably became on yang
Yang also relied on ruby
Just after their mom died and their dad shut down
Taking care of Ruby was something to do
Keep her busy and not thinking about what was going on
And she’s someone who literally couldn’t leave her
As hard and awful as it is to be only two years older and step up emotionally or physically or whatever you perceive the situation to have been, she still is probably grateful that she still at least has Ruby, even if as a job to do
And I think they never really escaped that relationship fully
Yang left to go to beacon and Ruby ended up just following her there
But then yang lost her
And Ruby left
And they had to confront finally each other’s absence
And I will say I think they didn’t do it very well

Headcanon time!
I feel like Yang's used to being called "beautiful".
She's probably been told multiple times by people (either just complimenting her or attempting to flirt) that she's "beautiful", "stunning", "gorgeous", "pretty", "good-looking", "ravishing", etc. And I feel like she's never cared, probably just smiled and laughed it off.
The first time Blake calls her "handsome" is the first time Yang completely shuts down over a compliment. She's blushing, stuttering, trying and failing to maintain composure, making jokes, probably trying to deny being THAT attractive or something. Blake, of course, is a smart cookie and immediately gets what's going on. So she calls Yang "handsome" again. And it feels right to the blonde. It feels more right than anything ever has.
She's handsome.
#this yang is handsome -> pass it on#she is my butch hero - i miss them so much#scathing eyes ask that we be symmetrical - one sides and easily processed#yet every misshapen spark's unseen handsomeness is greater than its would be judgement#yang xiao long#blake belladonna#bumbleby#rwby

Random RWBY thought 3,954:
So if RWBY is canonically a part of both the Dungeons and Dragons multiverse and the Justice League multiverse, does that mean that the DnD and JL multiverses are the same?
JL notes: The movies are considered canon optional, meaning you can consider them canon or not. The RWBY x JL comics are non-canon. Since WB sold RWBY, does it still count?
DnD notes: The Grimm Campaign is canon within the RWBY timeline. It was inducted in as an official DnD campaign by The Wizards of the Coast.

Weiss is the unsung beefender of the bees!
Can we talk about how Weiss just knows she has to get to Blake? She knew she'd be so distraught that she'd try to yeet herself off the ledge after Yang. Weiss was at her side the second Blake dropped to her knees.
She was there for Yang when she had a breakdown about Blake, and she was there for Blake when she thought she'd lost Yang for good. 💙❄️

If I had a quarter for each time someone posted about Kipo and The Age of the Wonderbeasts on Tumblr, then I would have two quarters. Which is criminally insane! Since this one of the best shows I've ever seen! And Scarlemagne is a 100/100 villain/anti-hero. I seriously want to give him a hug, while simultaneously being terrified at the thought.
i think i waunt him 💔

Exactly!!! As someone who is also pretty far on the aro-ace spectrum, I understand why people get jaded with platonic relationships getting seen as less meaningful than romantic ones, at least when it comes from a place of genuine exhaustion (eg, with amatonormativity). But just because two characters enter a romantic relationship doesn't mean that they are trading in their friendship for smut, like some type of designated mating pair. If done right, it can greatly complement their friendship (but of course, we can still see equally complex and supportive bonds in platonic relationships, it's just a different flavor).
But whether they are besties or romantic partners, what matters most is that they are happy and supported. And while they may be fictional, I believe this matters more than what we as fans want.
It is aggravating seeing people using the idea of 'friendship' or 'sisterhood' as a smokescreen to hide their bigotry. Yes, platonic relationships are just as important as romantic ones. But if someone is *only* using this assertion when criticizing same-sex relationships, then they don't actually care about friendship!
Case in point, Yang and Ruby have a *fantastic* relationship! Yang literally raised Ruby after Summer disappeared and Tai shut down (for several years). Yang traveled across Anima, facing down a crime lord to find her sister. She supported Ruby when she was at her lowest after the incident with the hound, and literally threw herself in front of Neo to save Ruby's life. And her support for Ruby over boba tea? Absolute peak. And yet somehow, Yang is a 'bad sister' because she dares to have a life of her own. I can pretty much guarantee that these dunderheads would not be making this argument if she was dating a man, instead of Blake. Especially since many of these same people touting the virtues of platonic relationships are simultaneously angry that Blake and Sun have a healthy platonic relationship, rather than a romantic one.
But, there will always be those who seek to spread harm. At the end of the day, they are just making themselves miserable trying to bend the world to their draconian views. Meanwhile, RWBY and similar shows will continue to foster an inclusive array of relationships.
As much as it frustrates me when people believe romantic relationships are somehow more valuable than platonic ones, I also don't understand why someone shipping characters who are close friends together (f/f or m/m) is seen as diminishing their relationship.
like, the characters are still besties. the romance is built off their deep bond, the friendship is why people ship it
I'll see it under edits a lot, comments like, "finally, someone who understands they're JUST FRIENDS" or "why are you ruining their friendship?"
And look, as someone on the aro and ace spectrums, I really understand frustration with other people devaluing platonic bonds, I truly do. However, such statements often devalue friendship within them ("just friends") and assume the people who ship them cannot possibly comprehend the complexities of the relationship simply because they see it as romantic - which is not the case. tbh sometimes I end up shipping a pairing because the only people thinking deeply about their bond and posting about it are the shippers! (that's what happened to me with eremin lol)
uh anyways we know the answer is primarily homophobia, probably mixed in with some genuine frustration about amatonormativity. It sucks that the language aro/ace people have for commenting on this issue is so similar to the rhetoric other people use to poorly conceal their homophobia. There is a genuine discussion to be had about how romantic and sexual relationships are valued over platonic ones and placed on a pedestal, but they get lost in the sea of bad-faith comments.
For instance, I do sometimes see the bond between characters be reduced to their romantic connection, even in well-intentioned analyses. The "would friends look at each other/treat each other like THIS?" style of posts also often rankle me because yes! I do look at my friends with adoration, and we do hug and we do go out of our way to support each other. Yet, those are traits I enjoy in ships, so I can't even get too mad lol. The problem is when that type of affection is thought to be relegated to romance.
extension of thoughts
#within fan faction; nuts and dolts is my light in the darkness (whiterose as well some times)#but i 100% headcannon ruby as aro-ace in the main show and love her for it!!!#i might not be attracted to people irl but i enjoy fictional romances when they are built from friendship (like bumbleby)#rather tgan blase tropism and fan service#im looking at you Gorilla God's Go To Girl!#but i also adore close friendships (and other platonic relationships) and believe that they are equally essential to good story telling!#aroace#aromantic#asexual#rwby#yang xiao long#blake belladonna#ruby rose#lgbtq#fight the darkness#fight the hate#yes
