I read Go Ask Alice in middle school.

The whole book is a collection of diary entries from this girl who falls into addiction, and to this day, I believe it is one of the best books I’ve ever read for many reasons.

The biggest one was how it gave me a realistic understanding of what addiction can do to your life.

Both of my grandparents were old school hippies and are now members of a Narcotics Anonymous group, and have both been sober since my mom was 2. When I told them I was reading this book, they opened up to me about the reasons they got sober, and I got probably the best anti-drug talk one could ask for.

The spark notes are this: It’s okay to have fun, but there are consequences for not consuming in moderation. If you want to experiment, do so carefully and set boundaries with yourself. Always test what you're taking and understand that a profit can be made from getting you hooked.

My parents who are both nurses added this: All drus have the ability to permanently mess with your personal brain chemistry (if you have a family history of psychosis there are a lot of drugs you will want to steer clear from), so make sure you understand precisely what you’re signing up for, and in the worst case scenario have friends who who will look out for you, and always have Narcan on you.
