July 2, 2000
Aaliyah, photographed at Puff’s annual Fourth of July weekend BBQ and party at his property in East Hampton on July 2, 2000
In the late 90's when Jigga would throw these parties there would be over 800 people. Since 1997 Hov and the Roc-A-Fella Records family had been renting mansions (which often came with a $30,000-a-week rent tag) and hosting Summer-long parties for their family and friends. The festivities would culminate in a massive Independence Day soirée, complete with a Roc-themed menu and VIP guest-list. That year they had booked the club Conscience Point to host the “Big Pimpin’ Party,” but two weeks before invites were sent, the party started to get too hot for its own good. “We were getting 20 to 30 calls a day, without invitations,” his publicist Lizzie Grubman remembers. And so the Tuesday before the party, Jay and Dame Dash asked Grubman to change the venue to Jay’s rented mansion. In line with the permit issued by the East Hampton town board, they cut the guest list to only 150 close friends and shut off the music promptly at 11 ‘clock.
Being a longtime friend of Jay meant that Baby Girl was of course always invited out to the Roc’s summer house. During one of her last-ever interviews with journalist Touré, held at the Roc’s East Hampton mansion just two weeks before her untimely passing in August 2001, Aaliyah said this about her close friend: “Jay is the sweetest person. I have so much fun when I’m with him. I admire him because he’s an amazing talent, and on top of that he’s a beautiful person. He’s really good people.”
Aaliyah’s close friend Natane Adcock was also privy to the Roc’s festivities—in fact she was the one who would formally introduce Dame Dash, who she counted as her “best guy friend,” to Aaliyah during this 2000 holiday, beginning a whirlwind romance between the two. When the couple returned to East Hampton a year later in 2001 a bed strewn with rose petals greeted Aaliyah on arrival. Two weeks after their trip a different picture was being painted: For five days Dame barely moved from his bed, as he mourned the untimely loss of his “informal” fiance'. And for five days, Jay-Z sat with him on the bed, supporting his best friend through his grief. The whole Roc-A-Fella crew slept over—on the floor, on the couches—while their CEO wept. Due to the circumstances, they knew he could very well be heading to the Bellevue Hospital Center.
Natane would speak on the group’s time together in the Hamptons for a memorial feature in Vibe magazine in November 2001. “I’ll never forget how we laughed our way through the Summers,” she explained.

Aaliyah, Damon Dash, and Natane Photography by @patrickmcmullan aaliyah @duskopoppington@natane
Aaliyah & Damon’s love for each other was unmatched. I can only imagine the goofiness they shared. Her Instagram today would have been full of the love, laughter and such an intellectual mind (not to mention fashion and hair care). ❤️🌹

So, Blackground has a new distribution company (ADA) | @ada_music
Going forward ADA; (Alternative Distribution Alliance) the independent distribution arm of Warner Music Group will assist with the way their music reaches stores, streaming platforms, and digital retailers.
In the US, Blackground distributors have been (per Wikipedia):
>> Blackground (original)
Jive (1994–1996) Atlantic (1996–2000) Virgin (2000–2001) Universal (2001–2012) Reservoir Media Management (2012–2019)
>> Blackground 2.0
Empire Distribution (2021–2025)
Though an exact date hasn’t been officially announced, the change became public around June 2025, based on ADA’s and related press reports (including this flyer ADA released that caught many Aaliyah fans eyes).
What could this mean for the "Unstoppable" album?
What are your thoughts (if any)?

Happy Blessed Birthday to American singer-songwriter, Johntá Moore Austin
In 1998, Austin co-wrote the single "Miss You", which was originally intended for release on Aaliyah's self-titled third studio album (2001). However, following the singer’s untimely death in August of 2001, the track was ultimately included on the posthumously released compilation album, I Care 4 U (2002) alongside other Austin-penned songs "All I Need", "Come Over", and "Don't Worry".
Johntá mentioned in a interview that Blackground didn't think the song (Miss You) would do well and passed up on the song but Aaliyah believed in the song and really wanted it.

Michael Joseph Jackson
August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009
Even Aaliyah once said (on MTV Stripped) 'Thriller' was one of her "Top 3 Singles Of All Time". Aaliyah responded that her "#1 choice" would be "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. She said it was the "Best song in the world, Best video in the world" and that "No one will ever top Thriller". Do you agree with her?

Where were you when you found out Michael Jackson passed away?
The King of Pop didn’t just shape music, he defined it for generations.
