This is really funny to me as a chemical engineer because sugars are actually shockingly difficult to synthesize from petroleum. The best non-biological synthesis pathway for glucose and fructose starts with formaldehyde and produces a basically random blend of sugars in a variety of lengths, half of which aren't digestible because they're the wrong chirality.
