Strolling the aisles of a lavish library he had stumbled upon, the man witnessed a small slip of metal roll near to him. ❝Oh!❞ Now, his first instinct was to kick it away in fear it would be a bomb. After a moment of frozen movements, he swayed to the side of the aisle for ten seconds or so. It gave him time to contemplate his options, and once he assured himself it wasn’t an explosive, he thought it best to discover where it came from. The only logical response.
One, two, and three steps were made towards the disk before he was within arm’s reach to it. Bending over, he clutched a hand around it and with a straightened back he examined it.
Dangling it from one hand, he twisted his hand and looked over the two sides of this shining slab of metal. It almost looked like... a computer disk.
A frown came to rest on his face, both lips downturned with confusion. What use it must have, he wasn’t sure he needed to know. Instead of reading the disk on a computer, Abe placed it flat against his blue palm and began walking around the corner of the aisle. Spotting a young woman at a lone table, he couldn’t help but imagine she was the one to have dropped it.
❝Excuse me --- this wouldn’t happen to be yours?❞ He murmured, one hand offering the metal for her to look at.
Bibliophiles ♡ Ophelia & Abe
Functional libraries did not exist in Ophelia’s world. Very few people had an appreciation for literature where she was from (If they could even read at all.) A lot of what managed to survive the nuclear bombs ended up as Raider’s fire kindling. Whenever she was lucky enough to find a complete book or magazine she’d take it. It was one of the reason’s she was teased as a ‘pack rat’ by some of her compatriots. Even if they did not appreciate Ophelia’s eccentric hoarding ways; they eventually stopped complaining. What she had learned in books and the strange objects she had gathered came in handy more than once.
The joy that shown on Ophelia’s fair face was almost infectious. It almost had a childlike wonder quality to it. In Ophelia’s wildest dreams she would have never fancied herself in such a splendid library. She had never been the type of person who lamented over what time period she lived in. A feral nuclear wasteland was what she was born in. Why pine for a life that she could never have? Luxuries such as a clean and operational library did not even cross her mind. Yet she found herself amongst more books than she could have ever imagined.
Happily Ophelia nestled herself into the farthest enclosed corner of the library. The retro beauty was surrounded by a variety of books. The subjects varied from; locking picking, computer programming, fashion magazines, maps, and cook books. There were even a few books in Chinese. For the first time in her life she could read in peace. Not just grabbing glances between gun shots and haggling. She imagined this is what being content felt like.
Between Ophelia’s fingers was a small platinum colored disk. As she read she absentmindedly played with it in; flipped it back and forth. Carelessly she let the precious piece of metal slip through her fingers and it rolled into the isle.

Behind dark goggles were wide blue eyes which kept a careful gaze on the young woman. Uncertain of the reaction she might provide him with, he stood ever so meekly as she processed what he had said. ❝Ah, indeed...❞ He replied with a short nod of his head.
She seemed ultimately undisturbed by his odd presentation --- a reactions he would rarely expect. Even so, the calm would not last as soon as the girl widened her eyes to look at the stain.
A sympathetic look fell to his face and his lips creased tightly downward. ❝Well, if it makes matters better, the stain looks to have dried!❞ In attempt to cheer her spirits, he mentioned this factor as if it would be helpful. ❝That way you won’t have to worry about sitting down again.❞
It wasn’t long before Abe’s head quirked to the side however, his attention caught by the name he hadn’t heard before. ❝Callie?❞
Vigilance
( ★ くコ:彡 ) An unfamiliar voice calling out her name caught her attention. Marie stopped in her tracks, wondering who exactly could be calling out to her. She didn’t really know very many people in this city. Who could it be?
The inkling turned, expecting to see a human. Instead, she found herself looking at someone that she was more so used to seeing, for the most part.
❝A stain…?❞ If she wasn’t so surprised that someone like him was talking to her, she would have been more horrified. Golden hues drifted downward toward her clothing, trying to find the offending stain when she found that she had it in rear.
Her eyes widened, taking in the colorful stain that appeared on her dress and she could already figure out what had happened. Those ink pellets she had received when she had arrived must have burst in her pocket when she had sat down. A frown curved the idol’s lips as she took in stain before turning to look at the other person.
❝Have I been walking around like this for a while? How embarrising …❞ She sighed, shaking her head. Well, no use in getting worked up over now that she had been walking around like this for the most part. ❝I can already here Callie calling me out on it too …❞

❝Endearing?❞ He echoed the word after her, a look of surprise covering his blue face. Without a doubt, that would be the very first time he had been called endearing by someone else. It was almost enough to make him smile, the edges of his thin lips tugging tightly upward. ❝Well, I couldn’t have gone this far without good company.❞
Widened eyes met with hers as she mentioned the limitations placed by herself --- the true nature of foresight made her voice colder than before. A simple nod was returned to her as she spoke, although Abe had his own curiosity within. He wondered just how deeply the ability must have affected Shyarly in the past.
❝I see...❞ He nearly mumbled, his face turning down to the ground as he mused. ❝I don’t believe many people could be so strong as to resist your ability. You, Shyarly, are admirable.❞
❝Ah! I did not mean...❞ Embarrassed by her implication, he shook his head lightly from side to side. Although Abe was mostly accustomed to using his gifts to aid him, he did not mean to say that he would use them on purpose. Not after all he had accidentally learned through using psychokinesis, especially. ❝I look forward to learning more of you--- the hard way.❞ He replied while lifting his head at last.
❝Oh, it can’t be much worse than New York City.❞ His teasing manner was clear as he spoke, his mind recalling all the people crammed into one city. Seeing the quaint restaurant doors before them, he made a few quick steps ahead of Shyarly and pulled open the doors for her to walk through. It was only right, he thought, to act kindly to her as she had him. ❝After you, then.❞

“Hehe yes, but it’s rather endearing.” Shyarly covered her mouth which was altogether ineffective in hiding her giggle. Thankful it seemed that their embarrassment would not get in the way of their attempts to please her. Truly that was Abe’s most delightful quality and the reason she had been enjoying his company so much. “You should know that you’re doing very well for what must be your first date in quite some time.”
Shyarly let her laughter fade into a soft smile, curling her fingers from his shoulder to the back of his neck, almost as if petting him. “It appears so. You compliment me well.” She mused as an offhand observation. Shyarly remained silent as Abe expressed interest in her abilities. Thankfully he said nothing of what she usually feared. Still, her face lost a portion of its kindness.
“Any limitations will be those which I place on myself. Future sight is not a power which can be taken lightly. It can control you, if you let it.” Too many years wasted in fear thinking her precognition was protecting her. It was not a large surprise that he possessed a unique ability as well, but thankfully it was not one which could harm them in the same way as hers.
“How curious. You’ll have to find out my feelings for you the hard way.” The inability to use his gifts was possibly an explanation for how disconnected the fishman was acting. Perhaps he was used to being in touch with the feelings of others though physical means. She would make this an exercise in personal exploration though talking instead.
“Of course. You will be impressed at how much of the land these humans can occupy.” Or not, depending on how much contact he had with surface dwellers. Walking on the surface was all to familiar to him it felt. Finally they reached the restaurant.
“Here we are. Lets pray we don’t need reservations.”

Blinking thrice as he regained himself, Abe felt a bit of sympathy for the other. It seemed he was doubting the answer itself, almost as if he knew Abe well. ❝Oh no, although I do appreciate the guess.❞ After all, his origins were often overlooked in favour of pointing out the simple oddness of his appearance.
❝I can only presume you are familiar with kelpies... You aren’t one yourself, are you?❞ Mere curiosity, that was all. ❝You don’t look very skilled at aquatic activities--- no offense!❞ He shrugged, a look of guilt crossing his features after he spoke. ❝I haven’t met anyone who knows a way to escape. Then again, I’m sure they wouldn’t be here if they did.❞
❝My name is Abe, by the way. It’s a pleasure to meet you, mister...?❞ It wasn’t as though he had a bias, but odd individuals like himself were preferred company.
Alec had been rather comfortable in his assumption of the other’s origins, and to hear that he was, in fact, wrong, startled him. He wasn’t usually sure of himself, in all honesty, and he didn’t have that iron-clad belief in himself that Jace did, nor the clear confidence his sister carried. When Alec made a decision, there was usually a small hint of doubt buried at its center. But this time, he had been certain. Or, at least, he’d thought he was. Downworlders were his expertise, after all, but it appeared that even that knowledge had failed him in this place. Alec frowned, the corners of his mouth turning down only subtly, and he fixed his blue gaze on the stranger.
❝ You’re not a kelpie?❞ The Shadowhunter tilted his head. ❝ A faerie?❞ At the second question, Alec couldn’t help but startle. ❝ Me? Well, kind of, I guess.❞ A part of him wanted to elaborate, but a larger part was reluctant after hiding his identity for his entire life. And so he focused on the third point. ❝ Doesn’t anyone know a way out of this city…? We can’t all just be stuck here.❞

Now and then, the lack of water in his body might become an issue. It wasn’t as if he meant to worry his companion with the slight mention of a problem, though it seemed he couldn’t help but do so. A taut look crossed the woman’s face as he told her it was growing difficult for him to move freely, his skin slowly drying from the lack of moisture in the air.
Yet what truly surprised Abe was the actions taken by his companion in order to aid him.
In one quick motion, his body had been scooped into Shyarly’s arms and he lay in her hold princess-style. ❝M-Miss Shyarly!❞
Peering into her eyes, the man felt his face heat up with an invisible blush. Embarrassing? Perhaps, if only he didn’t appreciate the gesture.❝Oh... thank you.❞

Splashed with another dose of water, he looked to the source with a slight frown. While it was true he could use another shower since his last excursion, Abe wasn’t so sure about a stranger hosing him off…
❝I’m capable of hosing myself off, you know.❞ He muttered, one hand raised in protest to the helpful act.

“We’re alone out here, you know?”
Sentence Meme // Accepting
❝I’ve noticed…❞ His tone was flat, almost worryingly so. Without so much as a proper weapon or communication to the authorities back in the main city, the two of them were in a right amount of danger. Perhaps they shouldn’t have climbed a tree with wendigos nearby.
❝You don’t suppose those creatures will go home?❞ Unless of course their home was indeed the forest district.

❝No, no.❞ He chided in a soft volume, careful not to scare off the swimming crustacean. While he kicked his legs to keep afloat near the girl, Abe managed to sneak one more glance to the creature below him.
❝I believe it’s just an oddly formed crab!❞ With his head still out of the water, he used one hand to point at the crab.❝See? Their legs are entirely different.❞

❝Oh–❞ Almost startled out of his position, his neck craned to the side to look at his company. With someone pointing it out to him, he supposed it had been several hours past his expectations. To think it had only felt like a few minutes of pacing…
❝I have, haven’t I?❞ He sighed and reached his hands to straighten his vest. ❝I don’t suppose you know a good therapist?❞ It would be rather beneficial if he had someone to spill all his worries to.

Uncertain as to what she referenced, the man looked to his companion with a rather curious quirk of his lips. It was difficult to see much of the subtle emotions on his face unless someone knew him well. ❝New to this--? Oh, I see.❞ Again, his embarrassment was prominent but he didn’t duck and hide his face this time around. Instead, Abe tilted his head to the side while asking a question. ❝It’s that easy to tell?❞
Nodding to show his understanding, he felt the corners of his mouth tug wider in attempt to smile. She was a woman of much grace, yet not too formal in her ways. Enjoyable company indeed.
❝Why thank you.❞ He replied, bright eyes blinking in a pleased manner. Compliments were always accepted, though not always with a composed face. Abe did find she was full of them, though. With his hands coming to rest in his pockets, he listened on with an acute ear to her interests.
❝Two of a kind, as you said...❞ He jested with her a bit, mentioning the previous time she had brought up their similarities. Yet as soon as she mentioned future seeing, he couldn’t help but slow his pace of walking. Turning to face her more readily, Abe spoke up again. ❝You’re able to use precognition! Amazing---I don’t suppose they limited your usage, did they?❞
❝Not to ask for a reading, of course. I’m able to use psychokinesis myself, you see.❞ They were more alike than he could have anticipated. ❝Not now, however. Somehow the devices used to bring me here have tampered with my physical and psychic adaptations...❞ Right, he could easily realize he was rambling now.
❝Is that an offer, Shyarly?❞ He let out a breath, regaining air after his bout of scientific wondering. ❝To answer you though, I am quite thrilled to see more of this city. An urban landscape can only make up so much of the terrain. Still, I can enjoy the excellent architecture.❞
“Oh its quite alright. I can sense you are rather new at this, no?” She could tell his experience with dating was limited, and mermaids were especially tricky. Most fishmen were too brutish and rash for functioning relationship. This darling was the opposite, clearly with only had enjoyment in mind, yet little idea of how to treat someone who found them attractive. It was just a matter of coxing out his true feelings.
“Just Shyarly is fine dear.” She smiled when they looked back at her, tilting her face to the side coyly. Her fingers remained brushing against his shoulders as they walked. So careful not to damage her feelings. What charity had she done to deserve someone so kind?
There was a quiet laugh as she, blinking down at him. “Well read and well traveled. You sound very cultured. I like a man who can keep my interest.” As well as relax with a book at her side, though more likely in her lap given their difference in size. She could work with travel too, as long as there was plenty time for resting. Her other hand rose to tap he cheek as she thought of a intriguing answer.
“I see. The same, I suppose. I have my interests in the mystical and well as the practical. Scrying into the future is profitable, but I don’t put it above managing my business assets in the present.” Immediately after saying so, she followed it with a condition. “Don’t worry, no readings on our first date. Your future is too good to spoil.” Her predictions did not foresee that this encounter would be the last of its kind.
“You must be eager to explore this city then. Anywhere in particular you’ve found to suit your fancy?”

❝Yes, well not entirely.❞ Truthfully, there were much more fascinating aspects to the woman besides her sharp teeth. It was only one of the intriguing factors, he supposed, although he could idly realize her interest dwindled. He could only presume a lady such as her was hardly the type to enjoy being prodded for examination.
The teasing manner in which she mentioned danger was fully returned to her through his tone of voice. ❝As long as I won’t be needing my first-aid tools.❞ He was somewhat serious, though his expression hardly shared the minor concern he felt. It would be a good way to explore the aquatic sub-regions, he mused while placing his hands in his pockets.
❝I---❞ Oh, how he had forgotten his manners before the scientific pursuit. With an open mouth, the man shook his head in apology, not certain whether she was truly offended or not. ❝I apologize, Miss Shyarly.❞ Tilting his head downwards in embarrassment, he let out a short breath. It was not long before he felt her hand come to rest on his shoulder.
❝I didn’t mean to refute your excellent company, of course.❞ He mentioned while lifting his chin at last, his eyes looking into hers. A moment of her playing with his scales, however, and he nearly startled by a ticklish feeling. ❝Ah--em... Well,❞ Having saved himself from exposing his ticklish side (or so he hoped), Abe’s lips tightened upwards as if smiling. ❝I enjoy reading, my library was filled to the brim. Stilk, I suppose what interests me more is travel. A friend of mine has called me a workaholic but I have to say, it’s not entirely about the assignment...❞
❝And you? What catches your attention most?❞
Shyarly brought up her hand to her mouth, running a finger along her lips. “That’s what has you so intrigued?” Her smile faded slightly. He certainly was not wrong, her teeth were extraordinary strong and regenerated instantly when removed. Those had all been talents taught by her brother however. They had no place in the life she lived now. Shyarly took the moment of pause to comb her hair over. “Thank you, but I don’t bite.”
She returned her focus to the adorable fishman at her side as they walked, her grin quickly returning along with a giggle at how he proudly displayed his credentials. Very impressive, surely, but not the qualities that were going to catch her interest. “Oh my, your impressive skill set might be wasted if we just swim together. I see I’ll have to plan our outings to have a bit more danger, so that I can make full use of your talents.”

Shyarly put a hand over her breast looking mockingly offended by such blatant prying. “Asking about my world before you ask about me? I’m hurt dear. A gentleman should treat his date with more attention.” Such a discussion of her world would quickly devolve into merfolk politics and it was all down hill from there. She would have pegged him as the type he liked a good book, considered themselves knowledgeable in all subjects. But people were not books, not the sort you could turn to the right page when you needed. It was his people skills which could use some work.
“Worlds apart or no, we are of the same kind and I find you cute.” That was really all that mattered for now. Shyarly reached down slightly to put a hand on his shoulder, fingers paying gently on his scales as she spoke. “Tell me more about what you enjoy Abe. Besides your work.”
