Just received the proof for our upcoming anthology. I’m so excited! I’ve decided to share a little excerpt on this fine Sunday (keeping up with an old tradition of posting pieces of our works in progress on Sundays).

There are so many wonderful stories here, including those by @chele20035 @sohypothetically @lindaghill . And the anthology is free!

He glanced down at the book he held, caressing the cover as if it were a talisman. Her hand flew to her throat where the five-pointed-star pendant hung. The sight of his gentle touch provoked a powerful yearning in Mora’s bones, a yearning to know that sensation.

“I teach literature. Irish literature, of course. Are you quite sure this is a dream?”

“I’m positive,” she sighed.

He chuckled, walking toward the bower, touching the verdant leaves of the plant that encased it. “That means none of this is real.”

Mora breathed deeply to steady her pounding heart. “That’s right.”

He looked across the expanse of the glade upon which they stood, a long line of undulating hills in both directions, swallowed by the fog. “This isn’t part of my memory. I’ve been to the countryside, but this place is unfamiliar.”

Mora walked toward him. “It is a fusion of memories. Pieces of recollections that come together to create this landscape.” She found it easy to conjure the lovely visions from images already in the mind, and he was full of them, both real and imagined. “Do you not find it beautiful?”

His eyes fell on her, discreetly roving over her figure again. It was clear he was a gentleman. “Everything here is beautiful.”

Katniss Everdeen is a performer for The Mockingjay, a hotel and casino run by mob boss Coriolanus Snow in Las Vegas. Peeta Mellark is the accountant who might be a plant for the FBI in The Mockingjay’s business office. The two are instantly drawn to each other, but how can anything possibly end well when they are on two opposing sides? Especially when the mob will have no problem harming Katniss’s sister if she betrays them. 1950’s historical AU set in mob-run Las Vegas.

This story would not be the same without the efforts of @bigbigbigday006 and @gentlemama, who offered their valuable time to help beta this story, and @akai-echo, who provided the amazing banner. Finally, this story likely would not have existed at all without the brainstorming session held with @beanfromdistrict7 in an old Italian restaurant on the Vegas Strip one summer evening in 2014.
