The Year We Made Ours - Chapter 3: November (5,9k)

Who’s ready for some crying and revelations?

Sneak peak:

Charles is storming into the lavatory like he’ll be late for class if he doesn’t hurry — which he might be.

He stops short as soon as he catches sight of the other boy, though.

“Edwin?”

He sees the broken phone on the floor and slowly steps closer. “Mate… What happened?”

Edwin sniffles, wiping his face with his sleeve. “It’s nothing…”

Charles squats down to his level, carefully placing his hands on the boy’s knees. “Nah, mate. You’re crying in the loo. Something has to be very wrong to make you miss class like that. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about.”

Edwin gulps. “I’m— It’s only a dust in my eye...”

Charles shakes his head. “None of that. You’re doing that thing. When you lie not to make someone worry? You look away, then you press your fists together.” He looks down to them to prove his point. “Besides, you’re using contractions. You never use contractions.”

I still sometimes think that the way boys fell through the mirror in the opening scene was not only their character’s introduction but also a very strong and obvious reference to “character A fell first (in case of Edwin — with definite struggling but anyway gracefully and gently), character B fell harder (in case of Charles — with all his might right on his face)”

The Year We Made Ours - Chapter 2: October (6,9k)

After three weeks of exams, the second chapter is finally out! ✨

Sneak peak:

Charles spots a figure in the park. Someone sat on a bench, head down.

As he walks closer, he realises it’s none other than Edwin.

Guess he’s not the only one having a bad day, then.

Charles sits quietly next to him, hands in the pockets of his jacket. “Fancy seeing you here.”

Edwin gasps, turning his head. When he recognises the boy, he breathes out. “Charles, you scared me.”

“Sorry, didn’t mean to.” He turns his head too, assessing Edwin’s face. He notices his fists are pressing against one another. He turns back ahead. “What’s got you escaping here?”

“What makes you think I am ‘escaping’?” Edwin says, staring straight ahead as well.

“Takes one to know one, innit? I always take a walk outside when something’s bothering me.”

Edwin looks down, letting a bit of silence settle in. He sighs and separates his fists to rub his hands on his thighs. “You are right. Something happened and I am not overly happy about it.”

Charles turns to look at him. “D’you wanna talk about it?”

Edwin looks up to the night sky. The stars aren’t visible, consequence of too much light pollution. He hums negatively.

“Fair, I don’t really want to, either.” Charles nods and bents his head. Then he looks back to Edwin. “D’you wanna talk about something else?”

The Year We Made Ours - Chapter 1: September (6,7k)

A Payneland/Painland High School AU

In which Charles, Crystal and Niko are considered the inseparable bus crew. No one messes with them. When Edwin gets bullied in front of them, Charles takes it upon himself to include him into their group. What ensues is a true kind of friendship and the discovery of what love can help get through, all in the span of their last sixth form year. Featuring an (almost) independent trans Charles, an insecure Edwin, Jenny playing legal guardian, walking shelter dogs and being the teenagers that they are.

Sneak peak:

“So, what do you study at HFA?” Before the other boy can answer, Charles puts a hand on his shoulder. “No, wait, let me guess.” He puts a finger on his lips to think. “You don’t look like a sporty chap. No offense. And you’re taking your A-levels a year early, which means you got some brains inside that head of yours. You read. Very old books.”

“Sherlock Holmes is a classic!” Edwin looks offended.

“So… You’re definitely in the Humanities.” Charles turns with a smile for approval. “Am I right?”

“That is still sixteen different specialities.”

“Yeah, and I don’t know them all, so you’re gonna have to tell me, now."

On the one hand yes making Charles relive his trauma was a dick move and also she was an antagonist for nearly the whole season, but I don’t think we give the Night Nurse enough credit for going “no hard feelings about beating the heck out of me and feeding me to a giant fish”

I mean, she was fine, yes. But a) Charles didn’t mean for her to be, that was fully a murder attempt and more importantly b) her being fine wasn’t a foregone conclusion even from her point of view. As far as I can tell if Kashi hadn’t happened to be there she would have spent the next few hundred years stuck in the belly of a fish, which is fucked up, tbh.

But she gets out and finds them and is basically just like “no worries about the fish thing, let’s get you on to Heaven, spit spot” and then when she realizes things are hinky and not going as planned she does Charles a FAVOR. And not a small one! One that could probably get her in a lot of trouble! One that puts her and her life’s work in danger! Because Charles asked her to and Charles looks very polite! When her only previous interaction with him was him attempting her premeditated murder!

Like. It’s no wonder Charles immediately assigns her a semi-affectionate nickname even though by all rights he should want to murder her again for trying to take Edwin to Hell. She’s possibly the first authority figure that not only wants the best for him, he actively and deliberately harmed her and she STILL wants the best for him.

Sneak peek:

“Charles, may I ask you a question? About… your soulmate?”

“Fire away.”

Edwin fiddles with the gold chain of his partner. He softly looks up to him. “When did your connection break?”

“Oh.” He frowns. “Um… About, ten years ago. Never knew why.”

Ten years ago…

“Do you remember… when, exactly? A date, maybe?”

“Uh, not exactly. Just… I know it was early in the year. Like, March or April. I remember ‘cause it wasn’t long before my birthday.”

Something like hope starts to sneak his way into Edwin’s chest. It’s probably just wishful thinking, at this point. After all, the chances are very thin. But… It does concur with the accident. Ten years ago, March-April.

He shouldn’t hope.

But he does.

“‘Oh tu parles super bien français’” Charles parrots the guy in a terrible attempt. “I don’t even know what that means. Could he seriously be more obvious?” He crosses his arms on his chest.

“Oh, you’re so jealous. This is great to watch.” Crystal is delighted.

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

"I’m not.”

Niko turns to him with her cute face and speaks with her cute voice. “Charles, it really seems like you are. Do you want me to distract you? I could paint your nails!”
