COMM10 Summative Assessment Module 5 (Discussion)
Discussion Video 1 Scenario 1: Kulang sa Pansin Syndrome includes crab mentality and pang-lalamang. In crab mentality, if one is winning, it implies that the other is losing. Thus, the one losing tries to outweigh or “lamangan” the others. In the scenario, after finding out that a different group has a better output, the characters are threatened and tried to outweigh or “lamangan” the other group. When another group has a similar output, they try to underestimate it. Scenario 2: Filipinos usually use humor as a way of coping. When they are not feeling good or something negative has happened, they usually channel it to humor to make their moods a little bit better. For example, Drew, Juan, and Camille cheer up despite the lows of their lives. Scenario 3: The Libre Mentality that Filipinos have is under the Deprivation-Deservation syndrome, a syndrome where the deprivation a person may feel towards something is something they deserve. In the context of the Libre Mentality, Filipinos would display a behavior on taking up opportunities that involves items as long as they are free. When Juan saw Drew at the cafeteria, he took his chance to ask him for “libre.” While Drew initially refused at first, he relented. Camille arrived soon after and also asked Drew to buy something for her. Drew at first also refused but with enough convincing he also relented. Video 2 Scenario 1: Ihinga is under the pagbubunyag. Since it is under pagbubunyag, it means revealing something. In the case of ihinga, it is one’s strong emotion that is usually kept inside. In the scenario, each character reveals their emotions: Juan’s frustration, Drew’s anger, and Camille’s regretfulness. Scenario 2: A Filipino’s favorite past-time is chismis. The Philippines has what they call “chismis” culture, wherein people would gather in one place (or in one group message) and would share gossip with their peers. It is also a way of socializing with other people. In the case of this scenario, Drew gossips with Juan and Camille by sharing his encounter with Lovella. Scenario 3: Throughout the times, Filipinos have been communicating with each other directly. When circumstances prevent them from doing so, one way of messaging others is by passing a message through asking another person to pass on that message. Just like in the scenario, Juan can’t contact Camille, he asked for help from Drew. ----
Post it in your blog with a not more than 250-word essay answering the question – Are the Filipino Communicative Behaviors and the Indigenous Ways of Interpersonal Communication innate to Filipinos? What are the factors that contribute to these communication habits?
These communicative behaviors are not innate to Filipinos. Looking at it today, these behaviors can be observed not only from Filipinos, but also in foreign people. Something like the KSP Syndrome can be observed in other places, even the mensaheng may tagapamagitan.
It is not innate, but we do learn our behaviors through our environment. In psychology, there is the theory of nature vs. nurture (Cherry, 2022). With nature, our individuality is based on our genetics, while nurture dictates our behavior to be based on our environment. In the case of nature vs. nurture, I would say that our behavior as Filipinos would be influenced through nurture, meaning, we are not born with our behavior already intact but rather, we learn our behavior as we grow older and we are exposed to factors such as Filipino tradition and culture.

Discussion:
Mental health issues had and have always been an ever present problem for the people. However, in current times, mental health and its issues has been slowly being addressed and has become publicly known for everyone. With the publicity mental health and its issues has been given, the media are trying to show to the people what these are and how they affect everyone. While some are good representations of it, there are some popular media that can cause negative views and stigmatize mental health issues (Perez, 2016). Due to its popularity, and how mental issues are portrayed, the common people are developing negative views about the said issues and causing more problems. (Pirkis et al.,2006) With proper and good representation of mental issues, it can be destigmatized, and it can let the people know that people with mental issues are also just human. They each have their own circumstances and stories. With people becoming more understanding of others, it may make the world a better place to live in, even by a little.
Our infographic has been separated into four different sections. In our first section, we presented the common characteristics of characters with mental health issues in three different FIlipino movies. These characters are from different eras of movies, with Tinimbang ka Kahit Kulang released in 1974, Kimmy Dora in 2009, and The Trial in 2014. Next, we presented how characters with mental health issues are portrayed in children’s media. For our third section, we presented how characters with mental health issues are portrayed in general media. Lastly, we presented some of the effects of this negative portrayal.

Module 4 Activity 1
Questions:
1.) Do you agree with the representation of Ati Culture in the Dinagyang Festival? Why or why not?
2.) If you are to suggest to the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc., what can we do/ what can they do to balance cultural sensitivity and tourism in the new normal?
Answer:
1) No, the Dinagyang Festival is a celebration of Sto. Niño and the Ati tribes (Timbrook, 2021). However, the presence and participation of actual Ati tribes, the people the festival is supposed to represent, is at a bare minimum. The festival caters to local and international audiences. It leads to the commercialization and the heightened showing off of the tradition, which erases the actual representation of what the culture is supposed to represent. The representation of Ati tribes in the festival is just surface-level, and no actual thought is given to it.
Dr. Alicia Magos has the same concerns in regards to how the Ati culture is represented in Dinagyang. In the investigative report by Germia, Muyong, and Torreta (2018) called Bili Sang Ati, she has expressed that in representing the Ati culture, the tribes in the Ati competition should "respect the elders and culture and ask permission." With the concerns raised by Raquel Mateo and Leni Ganansyal about inaccuracies, this doesn’t seem to be the case. 2) Further insight on Ati culture can help balance cultural sensitivity and tourism in the new normal. The fact that Raquel Mateo and Leni Ganansyal had the sentiments they had shows that we should provide more exposure to their culture by letting them showcase their culture without interference from outside forces to prevent inaccuracies. Going back to the roots will help people understand why and how they are doing the activities, as well as provide a sense of meaning that is felt rather than stated. However, this plan would not work if there was a lack of financial support for them. Thus, our suggestion is allocating larger income for better programs for supporting and preserving Ati culture and communities. After all, this is a festival of celebration for them.

Cayanan - Module 3 - Summative Assessment
The title of the short video is “The Letter.” It depicts me and my fellow researcher, Katrina, trying to write a letter to Sir Rex to thank him for helping us in our research. However, the pandemic happened. We weren’t able to conduct our research and contact Sir Rex until now. The short video shows an example of us trying to create a "performance" for Sir Rex.
youtube
What identities were you “performing” and how or in what sense were you “performing” that identity in that context? What impression of yourself were you trying to create in the other person's mind?
I was not alone in writing this letter. I co-wrote it with my fellow student, Katrina. In writing the letter, we both agreed on the content and tone of the letter. The identities we were performing were grateful students for helping us and apologetic students because we forgot to send gratitude for two years. To further emphasize our apology, I added more drama to it by stating the reason why we weren’t able to keep in touch with him for two years. For me, I was trying to create an impression of a student who was caught up in unexpected situations. Overwhelmed by the changes, he has no idea what to prioritize first. Thus, there are some things in his life he has forgotten. We were also trying to create an impression of better late than never. Helping us in our research was an act of kindness, and sending a letter is the best way we can return the favor. We don’t want to appear ungrateful for him.
Does the idea of the performance of self or identity mean one is being inauthentic, deceitful, and phony?
No, the idea of a performance of self or identity does not mean being inauthentic, deceitful, or phony. Rather, it’s a regulation or restriction of one’s true self or identity to create a great impression on others. Creating a great impression can help create great opportunities and connections. Some tips are knowing the audience and showing confidence. Knowing the audience can help with how someone should act to blend in or connect with others. On the other hand, showing confidence lets the other know and demonstrates someone's capabilities. In addition, the way one looks also helps create a great impression (Rowh, n.d.). The idea of a performance of self or identity does not mean being inauthentic, deceitful, or phony. Such words are derogatory and negative. The only intent of such a performance is to create a great impression on others. It is done by showing a side of someone's self or identity that emanates an aura of trustworthiness and likeness to others.

Emman's Silly Little Meme (Module 3 Summative Assessment)
Thesis defense, an event in which most of the people that go through this cannot avoid to feel things. It can make you nervous, excited, or even feel impending doom. Nevertheless, it is a vital part when undertaking your studies. For my 12th Grade, presenting a CAPSTONE study was a requirement for me to be able to graduate. My partner and I prepared for this to be able to get a good grade. During the defense, my mind was wandering to all possibilities of me somehow messing up and ending up with a low grade. Thankfully, we were able to finish the defense with no major problems, and we got a somewhat high grade to add.

Questions:
a. What identities were you “performing” and how or in what sense were you “performing” that identity in that context? What impression of yourself were you trying to create in the other person's mind?
-The identity I was performing was the identities of a student and a researcher. My capstone project partner and I were presenting our study and trying to leave an impression that we know what we are doing and that we know our study well in order for us to be able to get a good final grade
b. Does the idea of the performance of self or identity mean one is being inauthentic, deceitful, and phony?
-Personally, no. According to Hecht’s Communication Theory of Identity, there are four frames or layers in which your identity is seen and shown (2021). As a human, I think it is natural that everyone puts on a facade to show the world as a way to connect with others. All of those are not fake, rather they are just one aspect of your identity, and that the person is the summation of all the layers that a person has. Each layer adds a complexity to a person, and that is what makes humans so unique and beautiful in their own different ways.

COMM 10 - Module 3 Summative Assessment (Ardeña)
Description:
Around July of 2022 after Graduation, my friends and I gathered for a celebration at LaFayette Park Square. We spent a day having fun and then drinking. This day was a little ironic because it was a Sunday, and Sundays mean deep discussions on Christianity with my family. My parents are the religious type, so I play the role of the “quiet, religious daughter” for them. That Sunday wasn’t much different from the other Sundays, and my parents and I had a conversation about Jonah and the Whale.
Questions:
a) What identities were you “performing” and how or in what sense were you “performing” that identity in that context? What impression of yourself were you trying to create in the other person's mind?
This social interaction presented two of my identities. With my friends, I can be hyper and reckless, and authentic. With my family, I am well-behaved and quiet, and inauthentic. Being with my friends at that moment, I was able to be myself without having to worry about getting scolded or getting told to behave. The identity I performed with my friends is an identify that I was comfortable with, perhaps it is the identity that is the closest to what I perceive as the real me.
b) Does the idea of the performance of self or identity mean one is being inauthentic, deceitful, and phony? Explain in not more than 200 words. Cite a source/reference.
With this in mind, I think that performing an identity can be inauthentic if you mostly perform an identity to meet the needs of others, and it can be authentic if you mostly perform to meet your individual needs without worrying about others. This idea was influenced by Rousseau’s authenticity concept through amour de soi and amour-propre. Amour de soi is described as “self-love based on individual survival” while amour-propre is “artificial love based on other’s expectations” (O’Shaughnessy, 2020).

Albin's Identity (Activity 1 in Module 3)
Who is Albin? How does he view himself? How does other people view him? With the use of the four frames of Communication Theory of Identity, let's see.
a. What is the basis for the labels you use to refer to yourself?
The basis for the labels I use to refer to myself are how I see and think of myself and how I think others view me.
b. Which of other people’s labels for you do you identify with and why? Which of these labels do you not identify with and why?
I identify with most of the labels given by other people. I believe I’m aware and true to myself and show my identity to others. I’m an introverted person. However, once you get through me, I’m a fun and humorous person. The only label I don’t identify with is knowledgeable. I still don't have the confidence to confidently say I'm knowledgeable.
c. How did/do you become aware of other people’s notions of you? And how do others’ notions of you affect your concept of self?
I become aware of other people’s notions of me by observing how they interact with me. Sometimes, I even ask them what they think of me. Though, I only do that if we’re close enough. I also ask the people close to me what other people think of me. I use the notion of others of me to evaluate and improve myself.

Angelique's Identity (Activity 1 in Module 3)
Description:
In the making of this infographic, it was my thoughts and my loved ones' personal observations that helped. I have a lot of sides to me. To my family and to my churchmates, I'm this quiet and polite girl who everyone treats like a baby. To my high school batchmates, I'm this introverted person who you can ask for advice. To my closest friends, I'm loud and like to joke around. Despite all the different sides I have presented, they have one thing in common: it is a side that I have. Despite the contrasts, it is still me.
a. What is the basis for the labels you use to refer to yourself?
I based the labels on my own perception and mostly from the perception of others, particularly those who are close to me.
b. Which of other people’s labels for you do you identify with and why? Which of these labels do you not identify with and why?
I mostly agree with the labels, but I agree with being observant and open-minded the most. People tend to perceive me as a chill person, someone who isn't exactly judging and will accept you regardless (with a few exceptions, of course). I tend to think before I speak so I also agree with being observant of people and my surroundings. A label I do not identify with is being warm-hearted. There are moments where I am crass, which contradicts with me being warm-hearted.
c. How did/do you become aware of other people’s notions of you? And how do others’ notions of you affect your concept of self?
I become aware when they start to stare at me. As a person with a disability, I have my fair share of surprised looks, so I'm used to it. Also, I become aware by talking to them if given the chance. Their notions can affect me especially if their notions are negative.

Emman's Labels (Activity 1 in Module 3)
One's identity changes. It is a dynamic part of a person that grows and develops as one continues to live and experience the ups and downs of life. The identity of a person is the current culmination of the past experiences, hardships, joys, and sorrows that they have gone through up to that point. Not one will have the same identity if you look closely and deeply enough, and that uniqueness is what makes us human.
Questions to Answer:
a. What is the basis for the labels you use to refer to yourself?
The basis of the labels that I use is from self-introspection and how I think about myself. Most of this is skewed to the negative side due to a (self-assessed) declining mental health.
b. Which of other people’s labels for you do you identify with and why? Which of these labels do you not identify with and why?
I identify with most of the labels that were given to me by others, however there are doubts in the back of my mind that says “Are you sure?” which has been getting louder. An example would be the label “sociable”, since most people that have met me in person have said that I exude an energy that makes me approachable, in which I would say that “Yes, I probably do.” but due to social isolation brought by the pandemic has made me doubt it. This self-doubt has made some effect on how I perceive myself. There are some labels, however, that I would not identify with. The label “frank” is one I would consider not identifying with. Since I am not a confrontational person, I don’t consider myself a frank person, in which both words are associated with each other. The process of identifying oneself is always changing so all of these might change in the future.
c. How did/do you become aware of other people’s notions of you? And how do others’ notions of you affect your concept of self?
I became aware of their notions through asking them about me for the enacted frame. I asked my friends and most of them answered me in more or less the same ways. In the relational and communal frame, I have asked some acquaintances about how they see me and my friend groups. This has affected my concept of self in a positive note. It has reassured me that I am not just a nobody and that all will be alright.

Our thoughts and insights
The three of us were not persuaded by the ads and we have our own reasons.
Angelique came to the conclusion that the ads she watched were not able to persuade her. The ads were made to aid each politician’s cause during the elections and since it has already been months since the Philippine elections were over, she can only feel nostalgic in a way, but not persuaded. Also, with the reputation of Filipino politicians in general, there is this form of doubt, though, of course, she does believe that not all politicians are involved in corruption and other negatives that will be drawn to their reputation. All in all, she thinks that each of the ads has something missing that doesn’t exactly persuade her to it. The term she would be looking for is its effectiveness. After all, identifying an ad’s effectiveness is a recurrent problem in advertising (carmagnets.com.au, 2015).
For Emman, he has learned over the past years observing every election, be it local or national, that almost all politicians are sleazy scumbags. They must have some sort of hidden agenda or something that is hidden in the shadows and that most of the time, the only choices are evil and that it is only a matter between choosing the lesser evil. Most of the ads did nothing to change this belief.
Finally, the ads are not for Albin. For Albin, ads are too short to show enough credibility and personality. In addition, ads are mostly scripted and it doesn’t show authenticity. In a study by political scientist Alexander Coppock, ads persuade people only by a little regardless of its content, context, or audience (Cummings, 2020).
