on living in the states, as someone not born here. (came when i was grown)

rose: i have learned so much! over the past year or so i have visited the national gallery of art, i have worked with low income youth from public schools, i have been blessed to meet people from the chinese and vietnamese diaspora. there is so much love here. like things are very difficult for many, but there are genuinely organizations that try to solve problems. it gives me hope, that there are people who see with clear eyes and feel with large hearts. staying in my home countries would never have granted me this experience. i've gained fluency in spanish, seen snow, experienced car-centric infrastructure (hate it!!!). the privilege of learning in a different society is something i feel every day. and it is such a whirlwind. i have learned about mumble rap, about the history of country music, about black hair care. there is so much i absorb just by being able to listen. also the food is pretty good! i dont eat animal flesh but i tried pozole (a mexican soup) and it was so comforting that i wept. inshallah hispanic people start moving to shanghai and saigon bro we need them. like its ok that the states are mean i will treat yall better!! also discovered bad bunny the music artist from a friend and whoo boy he is so fine. based off the topics you can probably tell that i like food. and art. and music. and yapping!!

bud: i've conencted well with my bosses for internships. gottenn involved in mutual aid orgs in my community. i look forward to continue work w them for as long as i can. learned a lot about US legal system and i hope to get involved with advocating for prison reform. there are lots more concerts that i can see bc its cheaper here a lot of the time so once i build up my monies more then maybe i can go! also want to learn to cook more soups from different cultures. rn its 40 C where i live so i am melting away but SOON i shall master the art of minestrone. also glad that i met friends here and i hope to continue deepening our bond! many of them are busy in summer but once university begins again i wanna have more sidequests. also i wanna date someone seriously like dawg why are americans allergic to commitment. i come from countries where ppl are willing to do arranged marriage and going on 2+ dates means you are dating/partners. no talking stages unless yall r chatting and havent like gone on a date. i like making ppl flowers and candy n shit like come onnn i want a uni romance. so thats something i am definitely hoping for but i can live without it.

thorn: genuinely did not understand how mean ppl are sometimes. like i've never been called names based off of my gender experession or identity before. and any weird comments i did get in asia were from elders. but ppl have literally opened bus windows to call me a tranny before. and i go to school in a progressive area. also--i work with kids and its really hard to watch stuff that goes on with ICE. like im afraid, its not fun. my financial aid is secured through an outside scholarship that i have but its so unfair bc those masked demons crawl everywhere. it is scary. the kids are frightened. i worry a lot whn they dont go to practice (i coach debate in schools) that something has happened. kids at the schools i work with have been taken. i worry about gun violence as well. i dont know how people deal with the knowledge that people can just get dangerous military grade weapons. that was probably something that really hindered me like i was very afraid at first of violence. also healthcare here is so costly like damn that ambulance is not made of gold buddy. many seem to be under the impression that i am from commie hell. i am not. china and vietnam are countries w certain issues, as is the US. i came here to study because the unique history and structural issues of america are something i am interested in. yet ppl be treating me like i fled!

all in all i am grateful for everyone i have met and everyone i will meet. it can be lonely here, but there is great beauty in this place's resilience.
