9. What's your favorite line(s) or scenes(s) you have written? I do have several, so I'll split it into two categories: Lines that've gotten visceral reactions from readers, and a scene I am most satisfied with the result of (will post the excerpt!). 1- Due to a lovely comment from MajoringInClownery on Chapter 9 of Simulation Swarm. The phrase they used (among the literal essay that was longer than my dissertation at the time) was 'Capturing the tragedy of the mundane'. The section in question I believe they were referring to: "There’s no more apartment, no more early retirement with a purple heart and an office job buried under paperwork to keep him dead to the state, no more becoming a regular at a diner with garlic fries, or even a bar. No more potential driving lessons or stupid fights over nothing that end in ice cream and a movie marathon, no being embarrassing when dropping either of them off for school, no more thoughts of whether or not they’d want to go to his ‘old man’ concerts because he swears that’s what they would’ve called it, no more hope to bicker over what color they could paint the walls, no more making oven burgers for sleepovers that aren’t ever going to happen, no visits from Claire, no talking to neighbors about how funny it is to raise a girl, no more telling either of them that the scars don’t matter because they’re beautiful, no more soothing nightmares, no more puppy, no more constant begging for a parrot like he’s been dreaming of for so damn long.

No more sunshine.

There’s just a dark empty Spanish church, and dark, empty Brazilian shack houses, hills somewhere between El Pueblo and Amparo and Arklay,  the warp of his own shed skin, the shape of a third little girl in his arms as he huddles against the wall and wonders just how the fuck he can be sorry enough to put it back."

2- The second is from Chapter 24 of Don't be a Stranger! It is my absolute favorite because of my unconventional use of the 'Oh, oh.' trope! The excerpt is way too long to share, but it's essentially the moment Steve realizes he sees Hopper as a father figure and begins to become comfortable with seeing him as trustworthy.

3- Third an final is a scene I cowrote with @jeromesankara / @jeromesankaraao3. This is from our WIP fic, String Theory! The chapter is far out from being posted, but the scene in particular is below the cut:

Even in the silence of her own mind, it’s a cacophony. Orchestral in its terrible nature, a betrayal of her own cool head, a shock that brings her back to after Beth had died the first time. 

Selfishly all the same, she stares. It’s distinct, foul, this need. She has to see this fucker die, if only for the comfort of knowing he won’t be returning to wherever it is- to the ‘Sanctuary’.

She almost wants to nod and give Higgs the go ahead when he looks back. Inwardly, she despises how clearly he must read this pain, writ there on her face, but she can’t- she can’t help it, can’t stop it. 

Her eyes drag from the man, to Higgs’ hand, his odd little twitch. It’s not the first time it’s seemed deliberate. Physical. 

With one last glance back at her, another wordless apology, he- doesn't turn back to the body. Instead, he stares at the space between her and the tub, reaches into the space, and lets his fingers hang in the air. Like he had done dozens, maybe hundreds of times before. Except this time, he brings his golden knife inches away from his hand. It stills, like hesitation, and there's the slight flex of his fingers, until he swipes down-

It’s the first time, though, that something has happened because of it. 

And the man screams. Unholy, unbridled agony.

Something gives in the air, a sharp rush, a breeze past out through the bathroom door into nothingness with that screaming. All at once her heart is in her throat, it lurches through her lungs untamed and uncontrollable, a tangible shock- had he thrown the knife? Struck his throat? Had she simply not noticed, is she losing her mind?

The gold knife hovers in the air, just the same as it did a second ago, Higgs' thumb pressed against the back of it. With a click unheard over the scream, he closes it back into its sheath, blood and all. Light glimmers off it. Golden and bright, like a Christmas ornament, it looks far less intimidating than it is like that, that stupid knife. The scream lasts seconds, body writhing up, yanking against its own severed tendons until with a shudder, it falls still. No breath, no sound, no parting words. Nothing left of the man that warned them of the monster still to come.

There is nothing but the air and the dying breaths of a man bearing a message she never wished to hear. 

And nothing killed him.

No. Something did. Because Higgs still made a cut.

And yet Higgs seems completely calm as he watches the still body. Maybe just a little tense from the volume, ears straining to listen for the call of walkers, but nothing else. 

And like nothing unusual had happened at all, Higgs turns to look back at Maggie and asks, "Could be cathartic to kill the walker. If you're willin' to stretch out our little trip a little longer."

Was it the knife?

Was-

Maggie can’t deny it now. She can’t as much as she’s desperate to, that there might just be some merit behind his ramblings, the strings- no, strands, tangible things only he could see. He’d known where those walkers were. Had found them, time and time again despite so many strange odds. 

And that man had died with nothing but a slight flick of Higgs’ wrist in thin air. 

Something must click then. It settles into her face like she’s watching the sun crash into the earth, eyes wide, mouth caught half open like she means to suck in a breath. 

She can’t. 

She can hardly find the words to speak- it’s stupid to ask what, much more why.

“It’s- you-“ tears are starting to well up in her eyes, threatening, stark.

3. What's a fanfic idea you have but haven't written yet? I actually have a document set aside for ideas I haven't written yet! You may be dissapointed to hear that not all of them are Resident Evil, but here I go:

I should've updated the mermaid AU to this list as well, since I've only posted a single introductory chapter and keep flip flopping on how to proceed with the first main chapter after the prologue.

8. What kind of document do you use to write? Microsoft Word? Google Docs? Straight in the AO3 Textbox? I used to be an avid Microsoft Word user when I had easy/free access to it in college, but now I pretty much exclusively write in Google Docs. I have discovered that google docs, does in fact, have a character limit- so each document tends to contain about 30 chapters. This also makes it easier for volunteer beta readers to access! During the events of Simulation Swarm and in your anatomical drawings, it mentions Leon and Ashley have venom glands. What kind of venom do they have? (Paralytic, neurotoxin, necrotoxin, cytotoxin, haemotoxin, secret mutant other thing???)

Oho! You noticed! I'm totally not giggling and kicking my feet or anything! (For those who don't know - this is related to my fic, Simulation Swarm on AO3! For those who want to ask questions about it feel free to drop them in my ASK BOX) ⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒𓆫⭒⭒⭒⭒ Anyway, it's primarily a neurotoxin, very similar to most scorpion species. The main concept is that their venom is partially fed to some degree by leftover chemicals broken down in their renal system (kidneys) and then further processed prior to full digestion, and finally sent along to the glands at the end of their tails in the bulbs! However, by the nature of the neurotoxin, it can act fairly quickly and almost appear as a paralytic at first. Ultimately, what it's doing is breaking down the nervous system so that prey cannot effectively react when they're attacked - it keeps neurotransmitters from slotting into place on neurons.

By their sheer size, they do produce a LOT individually. The average human being is more than 3 THOUSAND times bigger in mass than an larger scorpion, and it takes about 1.5 milligrams per kilogram of scorpion venom to kill a person. The average scorpion produces not even a fraction of that, daily (its like 1.3 x -10 to the 24th power). I ballpark, based on their mass (lots of math I won't get into) that they produce 5-10 grams of venom daily, depending on their diet and if any was used the previous day. That's enough to kill four to five grown human adults a day! Extra fun fact: they are immune to their own venom, and affected very little by each other's!

Higgs is an Abuse Victim and I'm Tired

Hi. I think I'm about to make people mad with a hot take.

Spoilers under the cut for Death Stranding 2, as well as discussion of abuse and victims and assault.

Higgs is a male abuse victim. And I think if Higgs was a woman, he'd have been treated much differently.

And I know what you're gonna say. "Isn't this the 'you'd like Amelie if she was a guy' but in reverse?" No, actually! Because I hate the President in DS2 and he is basically having the same purpose as Amelie but that's not what this is about.

Higgs has been abused his entire life. From his Uncle to Amelie to the Beach. We know in his journals he was beaten regularly, there's even evidence of sexual abuse as well, but that part isn't as concrete as the fact that Higgs was raised in a living hell in a shoe box he could not escape from. So what did he yearn for above anything else? Power. Control. He took power back in violence to save himself, and I think that's really all Higgs has done after.

He knows violence keeps himself safe. It keeps himself safe when his DOOMS weakens and he has to kill to 'recharge' it. People liked him, though. Veteran Porter looked up to him. He started finding purpose. Maybe could have let the violence go if he didn't meet his next abuser, Coffin, who used him in her terrorist activism against Bridges and further poisoned the well.

Higgs was abused and he was left to rot in his abuse his entire life. He was a male abuse victim who was not expected to be savable. Fragile, meanwhile, was literally healed of the physical scars of Higgs, even. She will never completely recover from what Higgs had done to her, but she has the support to help her become a better person.

"But he abused Fragile!"

Yes! Which brings me to my next point. Fragile is ALSO an abuse victim under Higgs. He took away her youth, basically assaulted her and tortured her, and soiled her company and made everyone think she was a monster. But y'know what? Fragile was allowed help. Higgs, though, only spiraled deeper and deeper.

Higgs is still an abuse victim. And even in the shallowest of times where he was allowed to grow past being a victim, it wasn't for long. And it's because he had power to protect himself from being a victim again that he's seen as worse than the devil.

Now, Higgs did awful things in DS2 too. He killed Fragile. He tried to kill a baby. He brought violence into the world. I don't think DS2 Higgs could have been saved. I think he was past saving at that rate, as painful as it is for myself to admit. But he wasn't always past saving.

Higgs just walked on broken legs ever since he could crawl.

Higgs never had the chance to heal. This is even BEFORE the fact that we talk about this man constantly drowning in chiralium that drives people insane. And do you think being stranded on a beach that is so soaked in chiralium it can keep an eternal fire burning... for eternity is a great place for your mental health?

He didn't give weakness because he wasn't expected to. He wasn't allowed to break down when Extinction depends on his work, when God is in his ear telling him that he's finally achieved power to end the suffering he had endured. Higgs was given power he always craved and he was going to use it to stop suffering. Meanwhile Fragile just existed licking her wounds and waiting for someone else to get Higgs on his knees for her.

Fragile had Sam. Had Bridges. Higgs did not. Higgs had abuse. And maybe it's because Higgs is a man that he was expected to carry the pain of a lifetime of being used. Because his abuse also came from women. But I don't think anyone's really willing to talk about that, nor how Higgs has never had a figure he could trust to even begin healing.

And I'm fucking tired of people treating Higgs like he's a demon because DS2 forgot about his entire history and turned him into a one dimensional cackling monster. Higgs was not allowed to change because the story didn't want him to. The story only wanted a villain.

"But what does this do with Higgs being treated differently as a woman?"

Because women in this universe in general are treated differently. I know that's a blatant Kojima thing, but look at all the female characters and tell me that if they did what Higgs did that they wouldn't be forgiven in some way.

Amelie is just as abused in what is expected out of her as Higgs is. But she gets protected because she didn't have a choice. And yet Tomorrow clearly made the choice to not follow the path of Extinction at the end of the game after the fucking baby vore. So apparently. The choice has always been there. Thanks for that, Kojima.

Just look at Amelie.

Amelie. A fucking. Extinction Entity. Is forgiven. She started the Homo Demens. Not Coffin. Everything began with her. She strung Sam and Higgs along in a game to reconnect the UCA so she had a proper foothold to begin extinction. Even more than that, her being an extinction entity is a closely guarded secret throughout the entire world. No one breathes her name. But Higgs? Nah. Fucker tried to blow up the world all on his own. He's a boogeyman.

I could keep going. I want to keep going. But I'm just tired.

Edit: I'm adding one last note about how this game loved to string around the idea of trying to stop cycles of violence by supporting one another. People being brought into the Magellan crew to be supported. Even if Higgs couldn't be saved, it would have been nice for a single person to be like: "...Hold on." And really thought about what causes a person to be too far gone. No one speaks Higgs' name outside of venom.

He's just a Boogeyman. A monster. He is only evil.

DAMN I can't believe I haven't seen this design for plagas Leon yet, he's so delicious. THE MANE OF SPINES. THE COMBO OF THE REGENERATOR AND VERDUGO. GRR!

leon s kennedy - shapeshifter au

au where leon (and helena) were too close to the blast zone from tall oaks. they managed to get through the night fine, but over the next few days, radiation sickness started to set in.

they're both actively dying. withering away, decaying from within (and out).

sherry's reunion -> she promises to save them. even if it means sacrificing her own life. leon, stubborn as all hell, denies her help. but he can't do shit lmfao.

sherry chooses to be a lab rat again to save them.

leon, having experience with las plagas, still had/has some leftover imprinting from his infection forever in his dna. through experimentation, on the brink of death, sherry's donation (she's fine, probably donated some plasma or some shit), right before leon's time runs out... his body starts healing. it's a success.

... until he starts getting a little too healthy...

or to summarize -> leon's survival and previous infection fuckery leads his body to overdo the regeneration. for awhile, he's cycling between ugly, monsterfucker sexy, and his normal self. it takes awhile, but he learns to control it himself. bam, shapeshifter.

as for helena, she makes it through, too. perhaps she becomes a lil buggie herself, but absolutely gains regen abilities. (consider she's more c-virus influenced)

i also wanted to give leon a bit of a jiggly tummy, but it didn't come across very well. the goal -> a pouch. a lil wiggly thing like a cat. (think somewhat like regenerador's, but maybe closer to the spitter's from l4d2)
