Diana draws circles and spirals with her fingertip on the back of Carol’s hand. She rests on her side watching as the other stirs out of her sleep. There’s a smile creeping at the edge of her lips. Bruce had called her early in the morning, just as the sun was beginning to rise on her part of the world, with odd news but in regards to Carol - potentially good news. 

She hovers over her, hair tucked against her body to kiss Carol on the cheek. “Captain, I have news of a mission for you,” she teases with her voice hushed as to not abruptly end the blonde’s sleep.

sleep is a rare commodity in this whole superhero business. and a deep sleep? forget about it! yet, that’s exactly the rare feat carol has achieved, her eyes hooded from exhaustion and her breath ragged from feeling like she was sleeping on a cloud. a cloud that might have just been diana’s breasts, now that she thinks of it. all that bliss is receding into the past now, sadly, as she hears diana lulling her awake. don’t get her wrong, there’s far worse ways to be woken up, like that time the sun literally almost fell from the sky. 

❛ does this new mission have to do with breakfast? ❜ she grunts, a pathetic little pop of air from her mouth, and rolls over to lay on her stomach, face delving deeper into the fluffy pillow. ❛ ‘cause i could probably go for breakfast right now. ❜

he already saw it, the way the others had stared at the memorial in the middle of the cave, the blood-stained suit small enough to fit a middle schooler and the engraving he’d spent hours painstakingly perfecting. the way the looks on their faces changed when they looked at him. bruce knows that fear well enough - the revulsion, the disgust at seeing the thing you hate the most, that you’ll never become. 

not that carol will get to that point, that place bruce barely managed to crawl his way out of. but she can, she’s capable of it, and that’s the point. 

that being said, that’s not the only reason that he draws comparisons. if it happens to get under her skin - well, he has no complaints about it. 

❝ just because you don’t like to think about it doesn’t make it less true. ❞  a huff of air escapes from the side of his mouth.  ❝ and i don’t think that you know diana and clark as well as you think you do, if you think they would allow anyone, let alone me, to take advantage of them.  ❞

❝ fine. so taking advantage of them is a little too strongly worded. ❞

she’s conceding, but definitely not surrendering. she’s not in the mood to give him the twisted, satisfaction of being right. like he needs the jerk off material. but even carol can admit when she’s stepped into murky waters, and she’s not in the mood to drown. the stink of beer is on her tongue, coating her mouth, but it’s something else that invigorates her veins. she steps towards him with every intention of sizing him up. he’s taller, obviously but she stands more certainly, a woman in complete control of her powers. if not her other inclinations. 

he’s got lips that feel like they’re in a perpetual smirk, but maybe that’s the alcohol speaking. it’s like she’s determined to assess him and find all the ways he doesn’t measure up. 

❝ a guy like you, who lives in the dark? yeah, sometimes he’s actually a pretty good dude when you look close enough. but i am looking at you, wayne, and all i see is someone who’s a little too in love with his own darkness. ❞

she flicks an imaginary piece of lint off his shoulders. she hopes it stings him.

Carol has caught her alone. A knack for that even with the distance of time between them having come and gone again. Diana tucks blonde strands of hair behind Carol’s ear and relaxes her arm on the dip in her shoulder.  The number of times Diana has considered a return to Themyscira to speak with the scientists about a teleportation device - if it’s something possible for them to make. It would bridge the gap and maybe take away some of the strain that keeps them together and apart at the same time where they live their lives separate except for but once in a blue moon. “Hello there,” she smiles. “Long time no see.”

it’s the curve of diana’s smile that gets her. carol has witnessed the birth of stars, the end of galaxies, but they’ve got nothing on the conception of that damn smile. a smile that makes her feel fuzzy in the chest, like maybe she’s had too much soda, but in a good way. her fingers are curling at the waist of diana’s skirt, feeling at the bone of her hips. ❝ i don’t want to think about that right now, ❞ she admits, meaning that she doesn’t want to consider how long it’s been or how short this time will be. her gaze shifts into the look of a puppy, those pleading brown eyes that have a knack for getting her both in and out of trouble. usually the former these days, but she’s really counting on the latter here. ❝ think i could kiss you? ❞

outsiders would think she has it all. hot amazon booty call with some alien babes on the side to keep her warm at night. well, outsiders would be... partially right. she’s been gone for not even god knows how long, but she’s here and diana’s here. she gives a glance towards the lack of a ring on diana’s finger, before silently pondering whether diana would wear one at all. carol has tried to pop that question more than once, but the truth is she’s never been really serious about it. or maybe she was and she tells herself she wasn’t because it’s easier that way. anyways, it doesn’t matter. she’s here after an absence that stretched out to be as long as the sky, but she is here now and diana is here now. because she’s feeling brave, carol loops her fingers on the waist of diana’s skirt, bringing her close. ❝ hi. ❞
