I spy, with my little eye, a photo that was faked by an AI image generator! Can you spot the clues?
FB is turning into a parade of fake AI images churned out by click-farming pages. More misinformation is on the way. Learn some tricks for spotting AI photos!

I know I say that I'm kinda nuts for doing the amount of visual research I do, but at the same time: Specificity is SO much more compelling and real feeling, and imo not getting references often makes things look more amateur.
Eg. drawing a sofa- my mental image of a sofa is something like this:
Tumblr media
Like. Its a sofa. It works. But it's not very convincing, the pillows are kinda wrong at the back, and it's not really giving any information about the owner. Even if you want a basic sofa... What kind of basic.
Tumblr media
comfy and cheap?
Tumblr media
kinda rigid?
Tumblr media
inherited? ------
who does this comfy cheap ikea sofa belong to anyway?
Tumblr media
guy living alone?
Tumblr media
teenage girl?
Tumblr media
Grandma?
Anyway I'll get off my soapbox but specificity is sexy and fun and it can do your storytelling for you!

Multi-pamphlet book tutorial
Last week, I showed you how to make a mini pamphlet book.
And that's GREAT, but what I really need for my purposes is multiple types of paper in their own separate booklets bound together into one thicker book.
Guess what! I've already shown you the hard part. The rest is easy.
You will need:
Several pamphlet booklets, tutorial here
Scissors
Xacto knife
Thick cardstock or thin cardboard
Something heavy and flat
Glue
So you have made a pamphlet book.
Now make more of them!
I am using a different pamphlet for each type of paper: blank sketch paper, graph paper, watercolor paper, tissue paper (for pressing flowers, duh), and one that's literally an empty cover with no papers in it. (I'll show you what that's about later.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Take all the evenly-sized pamphlets and stack them on top of each other. These are also called 'signatures' in the fancy world of book making.
Glue their covers together.
For best results, spread the glue evenly. The easiest way to spread glue evenly is by using the edge of a piece of cardboard to swirl the glue around until it's thin.
Tumblr media
Stick something heavy and flat on to and let dry.
This is Harold, who is not flat, but he is a heavy object. So I stick a book under him. It's just easier to illustrate that the booklets go under this way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once it is dry, we cut the cover. I'd prefer a thicker paper than cardstock for this, but this is what I have.
Lay the book stack on your cover paper, mark the width, the height, and the spine, so that the paper wraps around the whole thing like a taco.
Cut the excess. Crease the folds where you marked the spine so that the stack of booklets fits nicely. If your cardboard is very dense (more like chipboard), then use an exact knife to score the fold*.
*'scoring' means making a shallow cut that doesn't go all the way through so that the thick piece is easier to fold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glue the crap out of the inside, lots of glue on the interior of the spine. Spread evenly with the edge of spare cardboard.
Set the papers inside, make sure the spines on the pamphlets sit snug in the cover spine.
Put Harold back on it. Wait for it to dry.
Once it's dry, you have a book! This is not tge most elegant way of binding a book together, I know, but it is a simple way to do it using skills that most people know.
Maybe one day I'll get into coptic stitches and hard backs and all that, but today? Today you know how to make a book that makes the brain go brrrr.
"But Lee! What's the thing you were gonna do with the empty spot in the back?"
Great question!
When you make your own stuff, that means you can do whatever you want with it. So I am taking that back panel and I am gluing an envelope to it.
Why?
Tumblr media
SO I CAN KEEP STICKERS IN IT!
Now slap a sticker on the cover and you're done!
Tumblr media
Nice.
Cheddar Bay Biscuits approved.
I thought the safety icons on the box I made this with were cool, so I cut the repeat of them out and made them part of the cover. I especially like the one that says 'fear rain.'
Anyhow, now you know how to make something out of garbage!

hello! I was scrolling through your blog (delightful) and found the post about Beef and his whiskers position, and I'm ashamed to say that in all my near-thirty years of being around cats and thinking I understand them pretty well I never thought to pay attention to the 'circle shape'. could you please expound a bit on what to look for when it comes to whiskers position and how to interpret it? Beef is an absolute sweetheart but looking at a brachy cat as an example makes it a bit hard for me to generalize. thank you!
Thank you! And also thank you for your patience--- I wanted to give some really good examples and have been scouring my blog for the best circle whisker cats I could find.
Picture heavy post under this.
Tumblr media
so this is the cat grimace scale. It's a sort of way to visually see if a cat is in pain/distress, and it gives a simplified view of the things I'm going to discuss. It's important to recognize that whisker shape/position is just ONE piece of communication and doesn't tell the whole story. A lot of this is also based on CONTEXT as well.
When you're looking at a cat face, here are the things you really want to pay attention to:
Ear position—Ears facing forward, ears slightly pulled apart, or ears flattened and rotated outward.
Orbital tightening—Eyes opened, eyes partially opened, or eyes squinted.
Muzzle tension—Muzzle relaxed (round), muzzle mildly tense, or muzzle tense (elliptical).
Whisker position—Whiskers loose and curved, whiskers slightly curved or straight, or whiskers straight and moving forward.
Head position—Head above the shoulder line, head aligned with the shoulder line, or head below the shoulder line or tilted.
Tumblr media
Calypso's huge whiskers give a REALLY good visual on the 'circle shape' to look for. You can see her whiskers are pushed forward and are loose and curved. She's feeling playful and engaged! She really wants to know what I'm up to and what's in my hand (spoiler alert, it was treats)
Compare that to this later picture, taken after she heard a dog bark nearby:
Tumblr media
Her muzzle is tighter. Her whiskers are pulled back a bit, and are straight. Her ears are set differently as well, one pulled back a bit. She's concerned, but not terribly worried about this strange sound.
You can also compare it to this handsome lad:
Tumblr media
Again, his whiskers are fairly straight. They aren't pulled back as far, but he's still very tense. He was extremely tense and upset that I took his water dish away from him (because it needed to be cleaned and changed).
Tumblr media
Milo is another great example of excited whiskers. They're pushed forward and curved, forming a sort of circle. Like Calypso, he's interested in what I'm doing and feeling playful. He was very interested in the toy I was throwing for him.
Tumblr media
Gumdrop is a good example of a more relaxed whisker position. She's curious, but not feeling playful. Her whiskers are held very loosely rather than being pushed forward. Her tail nub is up, indicating friendliness and confidence.
