Tiktok Ban UPDATE - IT IS BACK

I am able to access the app again?!

I don't trust it... what's been changed, what will be changed or what deal was made to make this happen?

Personally, this has shown me that I was too reliant on Tiktok for a lot of information and I will continue to work to diversify that even if the app stays.

Pandora's box was opened last night, the cat is out of the bag, and I will not be going back to how I was before yesterday.

TikTok Ban - Day 1

What I've done today:

1. Created new email on Proton Mail

I've been wanting to find a new service since they starting putting ads in Gmail that look like emails. This was the final straw.

They have a free version!

2. Moving accounts over to this new email

I know I won't finish this today, but my goal is to move a few logins each day.

3. Moved from Chrome to Firefox.

Also, switched what firefox searches from Chrome to DuckDuckGo (I havent used DDG before, but google doesn't get my data by default anymore either).

Wow, both proton and Firefox offer so many more user protections that I never knew was an option while on Google.

-tracker blockers (I already had ad blockers, realizing it wasn't good enough)

-alias emails. Absolutely everything wants your email, this gives you an in-between email that forwards to your actual email. The idea is if they sell your data/get hacked they aren't giving out your real email.

Thoughts today:

Before this ban i would not have gone out of way to make these changes, the effort wasn't there for me to learn it. But now, totally different situation. I am actively searching out alternatives to big tech and i refuse to use meta products. Happy to take the time to learn these new systems, even if it is a slow process.

I know i am not the only one doing this. I don't think they thought through how much this will radicalize people! The incoming administration started this problem and we will not forget. We have receipts.

Tiktok Ban - Day 0

Tiktok stopped mid-video, for me, on January 18, 2025 at 7:33pm (edit: i meant to post this last night... i think i may have been in shock because i didn't actually post it? last night feels like a blur.)

Reading the message felt surreal, felt sickening. It's a pivotal moment that changed everything, even if most people don't realize it yet.

Thoughts:

I can't believe they actually did it... Do they not realize what they've done?! The impact to individuals that lurk on there to feel connected, or post to 1 follower because it was somewhere they felt their voice was heard, to the economy for the small business they've just squashed and the revenue that tiktok brought in, along with so many other amazing points other creators have pointed out.

Even if TikTok comes back online in the US, it won't be the same. Mentally, this moment is burned into users minds. It will forever be tainted by the sense of betrayal, the stench of capitalism and the propaganda our gov tries to shove down our throats.

My degree is in Humanities, and while my focus was religious studies, I intend to start really digging in, analyzing and documenting everything.

it’s not the fact we don’t have the entertainment anymore on tiktok it’s the fact that we DONT have a unfiltered platform to talk about what’s happening in the world. Maybe this only goes for people in the USA but we don’t have a MAJOR PLATFORM THAT IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE US GOVERNMENT TO COMMUNICATE ON.
