This was inspirited both by Marvel's 'What if...?' and a fun post on Tumblr.
What if... Ragnar decided to avenge the Wessex settlement rather than conceal it in order to continue his plan to raid Paris? King Ecbert, forever the survivor, comes up with a simple solution to their problem:
A treaty Ragnar and his people can have their promised land returned to them, this time with added security to safeguard the settlement and in return Ragnar and his people agree to leave all wishes for bloody retribution behind. To further their mutual agreement, one of Ragnar's sons will be guided by Ecbert's own Grandson, Alfred. They will be joined together, with Alfred guiding the older boy.
Many years later, a much older Hvitserk is determined to break free from the suffocating culture of the Christians to fully embrace his Viking life, however King Alfred of Wessex has other ideas and is determined to keep his dear Godson Hvitserk on the good path, ruining all of Hvitserk's attempts to be a true Viking.
There's only so much a person can take before they break, question is, which boy will break first?
