Link lifts the Slate up to eye-level and lines both of them up on the screen, flashing the camera a toothy grin before snapping a picture.  Deft fingers swipe through to the album to show his baffled companion the image of them now secured in the Slate’s memory.  Sidon’s expression is bright with wonder, a sort of dazzled look on his face as he stares into the camera.  Link thinks… that he looks happy.  A memory…  The Slate begins to feel heavy in his hands, thinking of all the memories captured on the Sheikah Slate that he simply can’t remember.

Taking pictures… he didn’t really get it until now.  Not really anyway.  It was a memory.  What if he lost his memories again?  An irrational thought.  But it makes it seem all the more important to use the Slate’s camera.  He’d cherish this picture.

Learning to Swim Compendium Entry

Compendium entries are intended as world-building for the LtoS fic and are entirely my own headcanon.  Feel free to use/riff on these ideas in your own fanworks.

On Hylian Gestural Language

Hylian Gestural Language, or Hylian Sign Language, was initially discovered by Gabin the Fruit Merchant, a Hylian of Castletown.  Whilst travelling the far reaches of Tabantha Region Gabin discovered a small village of Hylians, long cut off from and forgotten by most of Hyrule.  The people of the village spoke with a combination of truncated words and hand-signs that Gabin learned while he sheltered in the village.  When Gabin left he took the knowledge with him.  Eventually the gestural language became common short-hand within merchant circles, often used to carry out less than savoury business.  There were also rumours that the language had been co-opted by the Yiga clan to communicate noiselessly.

Hylian Gestural Language remained quite niche and useful for very little besides trading until Princess Nyore Hyrule was born.  The Princess came into the world with little ability to speak due to mal-formed vocal chords.  Her parents, the King and Queen of Hyrule, desperate to give their daughter the best possible life sought all kinds of solutions from magical to scientific.  Eventually they came to know of the merchant language and commissioned Talu, great grandson of Gabin, to teach them.  Due to Royal sponsorship the once rudimentary language was better-developed, recorded in the Royal annals, and further disseminated amongst the people of Hyrule.

By the time of King Rhoam and Princess Zelda, Hylian Gestural Language, while still quite bare-bones linguistically, was well-known and well-used.  It was taught to the Royal Family, and most of the upper-class and well educated, including formally trained Knights and Guards of Hyrule.  In addition, the sign language was known amongst Hyrule’s other prime races, namely the Rito, Goron, Gerudo and Zora peoples.

Now, one-hundred years after the Calamity, Hylian Gestural Language, as Hylians knew it, has been mostly lost.  Once again it finds itself a language of Merchants, Yiga, and Outlaws.  There may yet be a few scholarly sorts among the now dispersed Hylian population that know of it from their parents.  Now the long-lived Zora alone remember the language as it was.  And Link, of course.

Hylian Gestural Language, even at its peak, was always practical.  It includes letters, numbers, basic greetings, and other essentials.  One might say ‘tomorrow’ or ‘yesterday’, or ‘thank you’, but not describe the colour of a thing or the way a meal tastes.  Link uses it in combination with spoken word and acting-out to communicate.  Of course, to anyone but those who remember the language, he seems especially mysterious and quiet.

my biggest pet peeve wiht the english language is that you don’t have sin/sina

in swedish if u have two people who use the same pronoun u can always tell whos doing what bc its like ‘han tog sin väska’ (he took his[own] bag) and ‘han tog hans väska’ would be that he took the other persons bag

but in english its like if u have 2 ppl w/ the same pronoun:

“she took her bag” whose bag????WHose BAG was it her OWN bag or the other her’s bag??????????????

“he ate his donuts” were the donuts his own???? did he fucking eat someone elses donuts??? YIU DONT KNOW bc english is a bullshit language
