fifteen years ago, nathan experienced love at first sight. when he walked into the library on a late wednesday evening, he didn't yet know he'd literally stumble into his soulmate, nor that the other would feel the same way. made as two sides of the same coin, made to feel whole only if together, made to walk side by side until the end of their days, but honestly? nathan never expected that end to haunt him sooner rather than later.
after leaving camp jupiter, but finding out normal life was no longer an option, he thought camp halfblood would be the place they called home for the next twenty years at least. he... thought they'd remain married, fighting the good fight until they decided to retire in new rome. together with lev & nico no less. sure, patrick & lev didn't get along, but he knew that deep down they all wanted the same thing. protect their loved ones, find that happy life they searched for all their lives.
well, nathan knew now that the fates would not allow him his. one moment the love of his life was by his side, shooting him that stupidly handsome dorky smile he ... knew nathan adored & the next ... he was alone, his husband .. just gone. patrick would never have left him, so ... the truth was .. if unbearable ... undeniable.
they'd had a plan, a worst case scenario built during their darkest years in case one of them was ever to be defeated by an unbeatable foe. neither of them were meant to walk this earth without the other. but patrick ... wasn't found, he wasn't with him, he wasn't ... there.
so nathan was on his own, the truth weighing so heavily on his shoulders he could barely breathe most days. but he couldn't die before he knew the truth, before he had proof that patrick wasn't just ...taken & yet he couldn't live on with the knowledge that he'd never get to see him again, never hear his voice again, never... feel his big hands on his slender waist again. he couldn't bear the thought that .... that had been all they were granted after everything they did in the name of a grand cause.
numb, lost... with his heart shattered to pieces & the desire for revenge fueling his every waking moment, nathan was left in camp.
& he couldn't believe he was to face the dark of this world alone from now on.

nathan didn't see reason in false pretenses. why let someone else waste time on ice brick production when he was literally made to do it ten ... or a hundred times faster & with a lot less effort, too? effectiveness was important. there was never time to waste. ever. not even when all they were doing was ... fun. supposedly. he'd judge once they got to that point, although making bricks was ... fine. not the most fun he's had all year, but also not the worst way to spend some time. especially when his husband was off teasing the other, grumpier son of poseidon.
"what are you thinking? tell me what you need and i'll make it." could they use snow pillars to hold the roof?
"yeah! i do know! and yep, my first big huddle i was in was right over there, with a stack of posterboard." the memory was so intensely happy for remy, his first taste of his place in society, right in the mix of their mission, no one could have wiped the grin from his face. even the realization he'd been going about this collaboration all wrong. he could feel silly about insisting on manipulating ice and snow instead of the son of the cold god himself, or he could get to work toward his own skills. organization of resources and building certainly was right in that wheelhouse. now on the right track, remy was able to focus on his plan more intently, moving the blocks nathan could create so quickly, stacking them, and balancing their weight for maximum longevity.
"okay, now we'll have to be super intentional about this curve! we need the roof to be super supported or it'll cave on the first sunny day." frowning at the thought, remy squatted to start doing some calculations in the snow, wanting to make sure the slope was just right.

"... that's definitely what someone who's afraid of falling down the ginormous wall would say." nathan grinned, not meaning to tease too hard, but ... it was fascinating, in a way. camp halfblood was so different from what he knew. in camp jupiter people wouldn't be held back by a little pain. or the chance for it. they'd see that wall & they'd be fighting who got to climb it first. "i don't gloat. it's not about winning, it's about challenging yourself." well, & skill, but he wasn't going to throw that out there. nathan himself would struggle just like everybody else. he was fast & lean, but definitely not the strongest, so pulling himself up there? challenge. "c'mon, let's try it."
javi looked at nathan like he was stupid or crazy. "it's 2023, man! nothing has to hurt." he shook his head some more, grumbling under his breath in spanish about all this misinformation out here, smh. still, there was a small part of him that wondered if he could. "okay, but you can't gloat when you win, promise?" said earnestly, javi did not expect to win and didn't want to have to beat this guy down for any slick comments. or at least that's what he told himself about what he just didn't want to hear.

nathan liked to think there was more to him than the normal eye could see & no that wasn't any supernatural reference. it just meant that the nathan most people knew was .. different to the one he hid within his heart. not that there was anything wrong with either of them, but nathan ... had no need for the coldness of his godly father when he had nothing to be freezing about. he had the most wonderful husband & they just settled in a place where their favorite people lived, too. his work was going okay even though he wasn't ...quite doing what he wished he was. what else could he possibly wish for?
"like you're going to find a partner in camp. quite i'm the best option you've got here and i'm not sure we want to see how that turns out, do we?" nathan ... was more of a solid ground ..person. a dancer. but he wasn't terrible on ice. "why are you here anyway? did camp jupiter kick you out?" he wouldn't be surprised.
Child of Greece... Raised by Romans... Nathan was... Peculiar. At least in her point of view. An archer... Married to a waterbender... Nothing wrong with Patrick. She adored the son of Poseidon. They shared the same sharp sense of humor but Nate sometimes... Seemed too tame. And maybe too heart warm. But then again... Marry a puppy like Patrick would do that to a person she figured.
"Showing off? No, no, no dear brother. Just getting a little practice in. In case I find a new skating partner, wouldn't want to be rusty now would I? I'd rather to give him a run for his money than the other way around. It's only fair." Figure skating was no cheap sport and her mortal parents poured every ounce of money they had into making sure she was a good investment. And she had made sure to pull through.

@horrificvanity *sticks tongue out at*
nathan had toured the boreas cabin in ...utter disbelief. it was inhabited. it truly was. there were half-siblings living here & yet he didn't get why. because they had to? who'd ...stay here? admittedly he was lucky he could crash at the poseidon cabin himself, but ... he couldn't be the only one with access to other cabins...right? setting down his quiver & bow by a side table made completely from ice, followed by a bag holding his armor, he let a careful finger trace the seemingly frozen surface.
sure, boreas kids were immune to cold, but did they have to live in a cheap copy of elsa's castle? roaming the halls, he let his eyes wander, trying to get a feel for the others of his kind here. with fleur in one room, he hastily stumbled into another to avoid her, but found it occupied. living... room? he couldn't tell with all the ice. "sorry, the room yours? trying to figure out what's what, still." glancing around the room as he made his way over to the other, he held out his hand. "nathan." pointing at the white pony by his side, he offered a little grin, "ghost, behave."

due to the cold not bothering nathan, he didn't bundle up as intensely as most others, so his dark red leather jacket did enough to seem like he was keeping warm - if you asked him. but the sudden cold sure had surprised him even. it .. was comfortable, though - a little homey. unlike the damn boreas cabin.
"i mean, there's harnesses to keep you from dying. hurts, though, for sure, but don't all lessons?" training in camp jupiter had been ..brutal. relentless. merciless. maybe that was the reason the inhabitants of both camps were so different in nature. he'd seen a girl chew bubblegum with an open mouth earlier. nobody seemed to mind. "i think it's exciting. i suppose asking you to race me's in vain?" the other didn't exactly look like he was ...game.
javier was no stranger to melancholy in the winter, and this new cold front had made everything feel desolate every time he stepped outside. generally, he hadn't, but then had ran out of cereal and it was an emergency. now he was hustling back with three bags full, snugged in a big grey parka.
"not in a long time. it was more like back when they had to make up shit for us to do? now there's a bunch of real life challenges, right? actually life or death." as if to say the snow agreed with him, he pointed all around to it.

"where's a will there's a way, you know? we've got talents of all kinds here, someone's gonna be able to fix it. isn't this the place you all huddle up around for ....festivities and connecting and all that?" no such thing at camp jupiter, that was for sure, but nathan hadn't decided yet which he preferred. the cold, military style had its charm & effectiveness, as did this here. or else camp halfblood would be in a lot less good shape than it was. clearly. watching the other get dressed for the weather, nathan had his arms crossed & actually took a moment to think of advice. but as someone who hadn't build an igloo himself before, he was somewhat new to this, too.
he unfurled his arms & let some of the frozen matter lift & whirl around, his eyes glowing bright blue - even more than usual. "how about you let me worry about the block production and you focus on the building?"
"y'know, normally, that would be a very salient point; but i don't think it's comin back, bro." remy inclined his head across the distance of his blueprint to where the bonfire was buried beneath a foot of wet and heavy snow. "at least not until the snow is gone. might as well remake it into a space we can gather in?" he followed the other's gaze to his clothes and nodded, solid point, pausing construction for just long enough to bundle up, hopping on one leg or the other rather than sitting. "you have any good ideas i'm not thinking of? otherwise, i'll get started trying to build blocks."

location: olympic wall open to: all you cuties
winter had taken over camp in a quick stride. he got here a few days before, had seen the first signs, but nothing could've prepared him for the cold winds that sucked the last breaths out of vegetation within camp walls. the cold didn't matter to him, it didn't mess with him personally, but he did usually feel ... melancholic to see the world stand still underneath a layer of ice in the winter. after a quick trip to the garden to find it somewhat lifeless, nathan had given in to the pull to check out the most likely.... most impressive building in camp. it reached so high, nathan could swear one could ascend to the heavens up there.
but it was even more impressive to watch it work. gears turned & areas all but changed entirely. "fascinating, ...isn't it? you ever tried it?"

@divinelyembraced
after tasting the outside life, even if only for a short while compared to the time they'd spent in camp jupiter, being back in some camp.. was bittersweet. sure, he had fond memories of camp jupiter & they didn't have to leave, per se. life had been fine. they'd spent many years honing their skills, had found to each other, so it wasn't like nathan had needed to get away, but they'd sat down & spoken about it. giving mortal life another chance now that they could defend themselves, so to say. they tried. at least they wouldn't grow old wondering if they shouldn't have tried again.
getting settled in this new camp would take some time, he … felt. it was so different. so much more lax from the looks of it. boreas' cabin wasn't necessarily his favorite place to be, but he assumed he'd be moving into patrick's anyway. he didn't marry to spend his nights alone in bed & he couldn't be making patrick sleep in a house made of ice. he wouldn't try. finding him was easy, nathan knew him better than anybody else in this world. beach would be his first stop. surely. nathan found him there, as expected, alone & just watching the water. ghost was trotting alongside him as they approached him, "hey, thought you'd be here. did you check out your cabin yet?" he was rambling a little, just enjoying the sight of the sea, but glanced to his side, blue hues hoped to meet blue in return. patrick felt like .. well, a little off. "you good?"

with patrick wanting to spend the day with nico while his fiencé trained - or whatever he did all day, nathan had yet to properly speak with him, nathan decided he'd take a stroll through town, maybe pop into the force for some specialized arrows or something. but first, he'd get acquainted with camp - the layout, the shape, ways in & ways out, vulnerabilities & of course, inhabitants. camp halfblood was so different from what he knew, he had yet to decided if ... for better or worse.
he'd been told there was a lake & he actually found it somewhat easily & with it... a face he knew. unfortunately. apparently, he wasn't meant to find peace in camp with his little sister around. another child of aquilo's boreas & one he'd met before. still the same, it seemed. he was quite sure, the last time he saw her, she was on the ice - which he had provided, mind you, spinning.
"sure, too busy showing off, i see. just like i remember. hey, sis."
[Location: Frozen Lake] [Open to: Anyone]
Could anyone really blame her for loving the winter and snow? She was a daughter of Boreas and she took pride in the ichor that ran in her bloodstreams. Besides... She made ice her livelihood. As a figure skater she had spent more time spinning on blades than enjoying the sun. And sometimes that showed.
Granted, there she was, eyes cold and focused as she slid over the frozen surface of the lake, her hair in a tight, high ponytail, and when the moment came she took impulse, her body using the momentum to spin in the air and then glide gracefully, only then noticing she was being watched, smile forming on red coated lips. "Hey. Didn't see you there."

the cold didn't bother nathan - per se, if not for the ominous happenstances around it. he'd heard about the woman breaking into camp & sending some of the demigods on a merry chase. boreas aquilo was on his side, so he was outside in the snow in a loose blue button-up & dark blue jeans. he'd come to investigate the crime scene, but instead walking into a bob the builder episode. how to build an igloo? he wanted to tell him he could help with that & neither of them would have to break a sweat, but he didn't want to crash that party just yet. he noticed a puppy dragging clothes outside & could help a small smile. companions. loyal to the end. "you should put those on, too cold for the likes of you."
he let his thoughts run wild, trying to recall everything the other had said. "you wanna build an igloo by the bonfire? might not be the best idea."
[ location : dark bonfire ] [ open to : everyone! ]
"no like see, listen. trust me. if we build this part out here, the peak of the structure will--well wait, it's a dome, so i guess it technically doesn't have a peak, but it'll go right over where the bonfire was...." definitely not ready to quit playing in the snow just yet, remy is spatially sketching out an igloo to sit between all the cabins, dragging his boot through what's already fallen to create trenches as a guide to follow. "now, full disclosure, i don't have much experience with snow, but i'm confident i can figure it out." luckily max had caught up, dragging remy's coat and boots out to him one by one, because he was ignorant enough to freeze to death on accident, and was now playing himself.

BIO
The Grays have always been lawyers. Nathan’s parents met through their parents’ law firms and everybody before them did, too. His sire would always say that was their secret to success. The Grays worked only for themselves, taking up cases that were profitable for them, those who would provide the most publicity with high chances of success. Nathan grew up in his parents’ law firm, spending most of his time after daycare, after school, after highschool there - every free minute of his days were spent in an office chair, running around the lobby, annoying the receptionists until one of his parents would come and scold him, tell him to sit back down and learn, because one day he'd be sitting in one of those office chairs not to play, but to work.
Sometimes he did. But most times he decided that everything else was more fun than listening to adults ramble about laws and consequences and contracts. In highschool, they let him work for the firm - it was simple jobs like sorting files, proof-reading and the like, but every single Gray lawyer went through the same process when growing up, so Nathan would, too. While other teenagers his age were out playing football or making music, Nathan was sitting inside his father’s office - ear pods in his ears with soft music playing most of the day and doing paperwork for the firm. He realized very early on that he was different. In more ways than one. One would be his well-kept secret, the other was diagnosed when he was eight years old. ADHD. His issues - as his parents had been addressing Nathan's ticks.. finally explained, but at what cost?
It was never the same after, but his parents tried their very best to raise him like he wasn’t the black sheep in the family. In a family so so dependent on the public opinion of their business, a child - and he was the only child of Liara and David, with a mental illness, as harmless as it might seem ... was not a good thing. At least they let him keep the music going when he worked, knowing that otherwise he’d never get any work done. Despite all that, despite the difficulties he was put through - despite the disappointment he could see in his parents’ eyes whenever they looked at him, he graduated at the top of his class and went to New Haven’s University to study Law and only a year later as expected.
Of course he did.
Nathan knew nothing else - had been molded into a lawyer before he developed the ability to decide for himself what he wanted to do with his life and besides, he’d brought enough shame over his family, he couldn't disappoint them yet again. ADHD was punishment enough in itself - if you asked him. the constant thrum of voices whispering at him, day and night. Nobody who wasn’t affected by it would understand. But he had given up trying to explain. So he found his own system, his own way to deal with the disadvantage and make the best of it. He wouldn’t be where he was if he hadn’t been born feisty and stubborn - a trait inherited by most of the Grays.
But, during his time on Campus - his family loosened the grip they had on him, sure he’d follow suit like he had been taught to. Classes, study, sleep. Rinse and repeat. Nathan though, found himself drawn to the outside more and more, found himself exploring a world he’d never really seen before. He drank, he woke up hungover. He dated, he fell in love, he got his heart broken and regretted ever giving up the celibate life his parents wished on him. He was alive. He was not just one of the voices - he was flesh and blood.
Love hit him harder than he expected, especially because it came in the form of a very handsome fellow student who wasn’t just someone equally misplaced in their respective family, but felt the same instant draw towards him. Like a moth to light. Love at first sight. And boy, did it hit them hard. Both their families would never agree, so they kept their love a secret all the way through law school. Nathan finished a year late and yet before Patrick and managed to get into the DA's office. Officially he was going for experience, but deep down he knew he'd never work in his parents' firm - his sense of righteousness would never allow him to. He wasn't selfish, he wasn't ready to sell his soul for money and publicity. He wanted to help make the world a better place.
When Patrick finished a year later, he joined Nathan and they worked together for about a year until - at holiday festivities at work, their parents caught wind of their relationship. Co-workers had commented on how adorable they were with their matching scarves and beanies in the winter and had freely elaborated when approached for more information. When presented with options on how to proceed - from both their parents, they knew they had only one option. Flee. They packed their bags and fled to the other side of the continent. San Francisco was their target location, but two demigods traveling alone were too juicy a sight to be let go. They were attacked during their stay at some motel a few miles away, saved by a son of Mars (?) and found out about each other's abilities.
Taken back to Camp Jupiter for safety, they both decided to stay and help fight the fight. Or prepare for it anyway. Sure, they had their ups and downs, but they held their own in Camp. They talked for a long time as their ten years mark neared and decided to try for a normal life again. Back to the east coast, using the connections they still somewhat had (Nathan never quite stopped getting involved in cases.) and for about a year it all went well. But then they were attacked again. And again, in their own four walls (the office).
Maybe they shouldn't have been ignoring the call.....
During their stay at Camp Jupiter, they found out about Camp Halfblood and that theoretically that's where they were home. Properly. So, both once again packed their bags and set out for Long Island to find refuge in Camp Halfblood.
Feb 13th update.
