Okay I had another thought which is that “miss” and “mister” are totally normal honorifics even though they also are words that can mean something else (i.e. I might miss, or let me my mister for the plants). So “mage” can absolutely do the same thing.

since mrs, ms, and mr are all descended from the latin word magister, i propose the gender neutral version should be mg, short for "mage"
