While discussing Season 8, Frank Spotnitz acknowledges the importance of Mulder and Scully's relationship:

Still, as much as The X-Files typically leaves volumes unsaid, after eight years no one should underestimate the strength of the bond between Mulder and Scully. “I think they mean everything to each other,” affirms Spotnitz. “They love each other, on a profound level such is rarely found in life. I think people sense that, and that’s why they love these two characters and they love them together. They’d do anything for each other. They’re soul mates.”

This small moment is interesting to me because not only is it uncommon to see Scully a little shaken during an investigation, but also because it shows that Mulder can tell when she's scared, despite her remaining completely composed. He doesn't protest or even question why she wants to leave—he can tell in the way she won't meet his eyes, her shy, non-confrontational phrasing "Mulder, I'm ready to go now," (a typical Scully would say something like "Let's go, Mulder,") that she's a little frightened. He probably could tell before she even said anything.

But for some reason as I was hashing out the linework for this, I started drawing Scully with long hair and it didn't really feel like revival MSR? So I made it end-of-IWTB MSR. lol
