Miscellaneous chimera xenobiology notes yaaaay

aka my various notes attempting to make the biology of this fantasy species that my Teto (and her family) belong to make some sense. Obviously it's fantasy and these are fantasy creatures with fantasy abilities, so there's only so much one can go down the "realism" front before just going "man fuck it it's fantasy", but I still wanna just do fantasy biology because it's fun. yaaay

Chimera are, to put it short, an evolutionary attempt at the ideal apex predator. Their unique appearance, seeming to have the traits of multiple different classes of mammals, is the result of very delicate convergent evolution and mimicry, and also the reason for their namesake. They belong in the carnivora order, and are earlier mammals who are (albeit very distantly) related to felines, though share some traits with what would branch off into primates and later, hominids. Despite their humanoid appearance. They are ambush predators by nature, so as a result have the body structure more befitting for an ambush predator unlike their human lookalikes, with strong jaw and hind leg muscles ideal for short bursts of speed. Early chimera were 6-limbed mammals, with their extra appendages eventually evolving into wings. They were climbers, using their two sets of arms for climbing before evolving flight, and like other gliding (or in the case of bats, flying) mammals, eventually evolved to glide and fly rather than climb for efficiency.

Chimera evolution was a process unlike that of any other mammal on earth. Their evolution was based entirely on mimicry, though unlike uses of mimicry in nature mainly being used by prey animals to avoid predation, or even that of some predators to attract prey, their natural selection-based mimicry was rather centered on adapting to rapidly changing environments with unprecedented speed. With specimens being frequent climbers, they evolved hoofed back legs akin to ungulates for ease traversing steep and rocky terrain, despite hoofed mammals being herbivore specimens. With the evolution of primates, they began to also take after them. The primate species that would eventually evolve into the humans we know of, which had high dexterity, stronger communication skills, and resistance to many pathogens; a trait an ideal apex predator would hope for.

That being said of course, all animals are ultimately still just that, animals. Despite being a highly adaptable predator species, chimera are not superior to any other animal, and are still vulnerable to injury or even death from fights with large prey animals or territorial disputes with larger predators, and of course, human causes. As with most ambush predators, they exhaust quickly. But as chimera display sapience on par with humans, the need to hunt for food has ultimately diminished as human societies advanced from relying solely on hunting for food. Hunting is now mainly done recreationally, but still has sufficient risk of injury, so it's usage has declined much in recent years.

Addendum on fire breathing abilities:

Chimera and their ability to breathe small spurts of flame is a very flashy display, though this ability is not used for attacking purposes like one may think. It is instead a very dramatic threat display, used in earlier non-sapient chimera as a way to challenge rivals over disputes involving territory or food. This process is made possible by a small sac in the throat that stores byproducts of digestion, and a gland located at the back of the neck that secretes a highly combustible fluid. When firing off a blast, this fluid will be pumped into the flame sac, where it will be manually heated up and combust, the sudden kinetic energy sending the flammable digestive byproducts out from the mouth, where they quickly burn up. Due to their fire-breathing abilities relying on using digestive byproducts, chimera must maintain a stable diet to produce it. It is for this reason that fire breathing displays were also used in courtship, as stronger flames meant a better diet, which would indicate strong hunting skills.

And that's it for just my general biology notes!! I might compile this into a fun visual thing sometime, but it's just fun to write and imagine stuff!!

Kasane Teto headcanon masterpost [remake]

Gen lore post for my teto design you see on my profile sometimes!! Figured it was a good time as ever to remake this since the original post has some very dated cringe old info that is still up via reblogs so I think it'd be better if i remade the whole thing LOL. Created in late 2020 when I drew teto with more beastly chimera features and this specific design stuck with me!! I've accumulated a decent amount of xenobiology headcanons related to her specific species of chimera since then. behold my little beastie. Funfact she kinda behaves like a sona/mascot therefore she ages with me!! So at the time of writing this post, she's in her early 20s.

Teto is a species of humanoid chimera with moderate shapeshifting abilities. She's able to appear anywhere between her full chimera form (above) and a fully human form! Shapeshifting was a learned ability in monsters as both a mechanic to better hunt, and also a way to blend in with human civilizations as they progressed.

Teto and most chimera commonly shift to hide their wings to aid in stealth while hunting/stalking prey, and just for general ease of access. which is why drawing her with wings is optional!! I didn't wanna draw her huge wings every time cause thats a pain. Chimera have very large wingspans, so as a result they can sometimes struggle with taking off from the ground, often needing to fly from a jumping point. They're also capable of breathing fire, but only in small spurts, so it's more just used as an intimidation display than for actual attacking purposes.

Chimera are (obviously) fully sapient predator species like humans, but unlike humans, are obligate carnivores! Teto however, ignores this and loves eating non-meat human food and then complains that her stomach hurts all the time. Chimera are also much more in touch with their species's instincts than their human lookalikes, and human behavior is a learned trait. They can purr, hiss, growl, and roar to an extent, though it's more like the kind of roar you'd hear from a mountain lion or bobcat than a tiger. Chimera are also very long-lived, having a lifespan of 100-120 years, with records of lifespans even going all the way to 150! There are two types of chimera, venomous and nonvenomous, and they're physically identical except for their tails. Venomous chimera are a sub-species and are basically genetically identical save for their serpent tails, while nonvenomous ones will have harmless forked tails like Teto. Chimera venom is highly dangerous to humans and small animals, but a human can survive a bite if they seek medical attention within an hour of being bitten. All chimera are immune to their snake tail venom though, even the nonvenomous ones, though a bite will still cause some dizziness and shortness of breath for a short while. If one parent is a venomous chimera and the other not, their child has a 50/50 chance of being either.

The snake tails on venomous chimera are not alive beings, but are rather very intricate natural mimicry used to warn other animals to steer clear of the tail.

I also have designs for other members of Teto's family who I don't draw as often, Ted and Tei! Tei is Teto's cousin in this specific setting, and since I've gotten some questions about this in the past, Tei is not an albino chimera! She's just got white hair and pink eyes, but those aren't a result of albinism. She's teto's white trash cousin

The youngest sibling of the Kasane family, though now she’s more of a young adult than a teenager. Still very rowdy though, Teto is a carefree girl who's always hated the idea of being tied down to anything. Refuses to be bossed around, unless it's by her brother.

Kasane Ted Age: 33

Gender: Male, goes by he/him pronouns

Teto’s older brother. Is stoic and protective of his younger sister, and helped raise her when she was little. Taught her how to hunt, and also taught her how to master a human disguise. Is notably fond of cooking, and will cook and season his food as humans do despite being able to eat raw meat perfectly fine. A generally easygoing man, tries to keep Teto out of any antics to a... moderate degree of success.

Sukone Tei

Age: Late 20s

Gender: Female, she/her pronouns 

Teto’s cousin, who was a notoriously bad influence on her as a kid. Lives away from the Kasane siblings, but drives up to visit often. When she was younger, she'd often used to wrestle and play-fight in the woods with Teto, as Ted was too old to play with her. Her and Teto still meet up occasionally to sneak off together and get into trouble, usually much to Teto’s hesitation, but they end up having fun in the end, most of the time. Tei is a venomous chimera, and although she claims that she has never poisoned a human, Teto doubts that. Has she? We'll never know.
