E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
Oh! Oh!!!
Is it time to bring back The Gatsby Gang Storms Area 51?!?!
I THINK IT’S TIME TO BRING BACK THE GATSBY GANG STORMS AREA 51.
I wrote it for the lovely @ask-the-great-gatsby and others in the Gatsby fandom back when I was but a wee lass of fifteen. It was absolutely cracked-out and stupid, but I loved it and had a lot of fun writing it! (And it turned out to be pretty popular—it’s in my Top 5 fics on AO3 for both hits and kudos!)
What makes it even better is that this isn’t just my most cracky/hilarious contribution to the Great Gatsby fandom, it’s also my ONLY contribution to the Great Gatsby fandom (besides some cartoony art and helping the proliferation of the #yeet Tom into the sun tag). In the height of my Gatsby obsession, I had lots of ideas for fanfic and wrote the beginnings of several. But the only one I finished, and published, and that saw the light of day? This one.
I could also mention that both fics I’ve written for the Secret History fandom—Aristotle’s Theory of Angry Birds and the multi-chapter A Dire Contagion—are absolutely ridiculous crack. I haven’t added to A Dire Contagion for a while, but maybe I should resuscitate it! And I haven’t really written anything super cracky for Cowboy Bebop yet…maybe it’s time to change that? 👀

one of my favorite things about the great gatsby is that despite being the narrator nick gives himself the "background character" role and decides that none of the things that happened are his business. he's there the entire time, follows gatsby around and generally has a very detailed perspective of all the people involved in that mess. he knows who cheated on who and why, he knows who is unhappily married, etc. this being said his mission is to watch everything and then write it down gatsby running over a woman with a car and then getting shot to death has nothing to do with him and could have not been avoided

Still thinking about how Jay drifted around Nick his whole life. He tried to go to college at St. Olaf’s in the next town over. Fell in love with his cousin. Served right next to him in the war. And then Nick moved in right next door.
Some things are just meant to be.

It does pain me knowing that if Nick was a woman but literally nothing else changed, the chemistry between Nick and Jay would be understood by at least 75% of the readers. But because Nick is a man and doesn’t outright say on the page “I am a homosexual and I have a crush on Jay Gatsby” it’s just been lost on people for a hundred years

Still thinking of Nick saying he talked to Jay often at his parties but found he had nothing interesting to say.
Thinking of their conversation being ‘boring’ because for the first time in a long time, Jay found someone who was willing to talk to him if he wasn’t lying. Jay had so little going on in his life at that time that he could speak openly and truthfully about and Nick stayed and listened to him anyway.
It was only when their relationship turned transactional that Jay had to start lying again and things got ‘interesting’.

Love that Nick was like “yeah none of this mattered to me in the summer of 1922……..I just worked and spent time with Jordan………I didnt care about Jay Gatsby……….” And then proceeds to give us explicit timelines where he could not possibly have been working full time, admits he lost track of Jordan for much of the summer, and lets on that he and Jay spent so much time together that he started having to do welfare checks if Jay didn’t come over or call him.
Like, okay, Mr. Honest. You only care in retrospect. Mhm. Sure

a crash crash course on the golden age of hollywood
to state the obvious, this is not meant to be a be all end all guide. it’s just a start for people who wanna know more about some of the essentials of the era. there’s plenty of people and movies i didn’t include but at least now you can listen to vogue and understand all the references.
