I got recommended “Sailor Song” by Gigi Perez. It wasn’t bad. Maybe I should listen to more music. It helps drown out… everything.

Mason didn’t speak his name, but he didn’t have to. The distaste in his voice, how quickly he said it—as if to get the bad taste out of his mouth faster—made it clear.

He handed the blunt back to Mick, letting his hand brush against the other man’s just a millisecond longer than he had to.

The room was thick with tension. They’d done this song and dance a million times, but Mason knew they’d do it a million times more, as long as Adler lived and breathed, Mick would go back to him. And as long as Adler lived and breathed, he’d hurt Mick. And Mason would be there to brush him off, like always. Never anything more. And he was okay with it.

(That’s what he told himself, at least.)

Same old shit, same old struggle against himself and Adler—a constant battle, push and pull that, more than often, left Mick to lick his own wounds. Left him to drink and smoke dope, just to feel anything else but the ache deep within his chest. But that could also be the few years of smoking catching up already.

The sound of footsteps dragged him from his stupor of self loathing, glancing lazily to see Mason: disappointment clear.

“ ya here to complain? Well, office hours over. Leave me alone. “ Mick grumbled, face scrunching before glancing elsewhere, attempting to stop the familiar churn deep within his gut: clawing up is neck.

To stop himself from asking Mason to hold him, kiss the bruises away, show the most minimal amount of intimacy Mick could never gain from Adler.

What a joke.

Mason crossed his arms, staring down at the mess that had become of the man before him. He wished he could say that this was the first time he had seen Mick this low, but he’d never been a liar.

“I hate to say I told you so,” he murmured lowly. He stepped into Mick’s space, plucking the blunt from his fingers like he owned it and taking a hit. He blew out the smoke on a sigh. “But I told you so.”

The room was quiet except for the ticking of the clock on the wall until he broke the silence again.

“How bad is it this time?” Mason asked, softening his voice. Mick was far from a fragile little dove, and he was well aware of that fact—Adler, the bastard, wouldve clipped his wings long ago if he was—but Mason couldn’t stop himself from treating the other man like one.

He’d always been a bit of a fixer. And it seems like Mick was the little machine that always found its way back into his gentle hands, ready to pick up the pieces and put them back where they belonged.
