I share with you a subbed snippet of an analysis made by one of my favorite youtubers, jordi maquiavello, who made a cool breakdown of the wolf's whistle from the last wish!

this adds more meaning to the whole scene, and feels complimentary to the theories of the melody being a somber and mocking version of fearless hero, and a version of ring around the rosy!

if you can, please watch his analysis! it's in spanish, but it's totally worth it. he points out a lot of small details which, I think, hadn't been mentioned before, and I love it so much.

also ngl, I'm almost certain that cinemex refused to screen it because of the political message that pinocchio has

usually, mexican movies that talk about heavy topics or diverge from the usual romcoms and cheap comedy don't do well in cinemas. and not because people aren't interested in them (which is a factor in some cases too, ofc); but rather because the amount of promotion that those valuable productions have in cinemas and other media like tv or radio is dismal to the more "commercial" ones, which always get all the attention.

even worse — if they happen to make it to the billboard and people want to watch them, those beautiful productions get the worst projection times in comparison to the other movies without any apparent explanation.

I also think that cinemex believed that they would get away with it because "it's a kids movie, it's animation, no one will care" and BOY AM I GLAD THEY GOT CALLED OUT BY THE AUDIENCE AND BY THE DIRECTOR HIMSELF

in any case, I'm glad it'll still be projecting this week in most cinemas, and I hope the audience will also stand up for other local directors and actors when it comes to injustice to their art just like they did with memo, because all of them deserve respect and the right for their art to be enjoyed

I think there is no better example of how Mexico treats culture and media made by local artists compared with how it treats foreign stuff than the fact that Guillermo del Toro wanted Pinocchio to come out in cinemas here, and the movie theaters cancelled the screening last second so he had to ask independent movie theaters and local governments to show the film.

Not even because he's a world famous director does a Mexican creator gets any respect in Mexico

sorry for more human au posting. non-exhaustive list of weird things human yellow has done in his life:

almost got sucked into a cult

actually got sucked into a different cult. only for a month until he hit the bricks though

eaten human flesh (only a little and by accident! says yellow. was it related to one of the cults, asks red. no, says yellow, it was at a health awareness convention my dad took me to. after a pause he adds maybe in one of the cults too now that i think about it.)

been a subject in experimental mkultra-esque mind control trials. he didn’t realize that was what it was until long after it was over he just thought he was signing up for normal scientific trial stuff

had several near-death experiences, all from completely unrelated things at different points in his life. one of them was from getting hit by a car. one of them was from contracting a rare disease. there’s more but i’ll stop here.

been a child actor (only for a few months until roy realized he was absolutely not suited for it. this was also one of the near death experiences bc there was an accident on set)

was a delinquent one year as a teen until he maybe committed minor arson on the city hall while blackout drunk. he never found out if it was him but he kept his head down after that.

when he tells them about that last one duck is like OH that’s not weird who HASN’T done that! and yellow is like I KNEW ONE OF MY LIFE EXPERIENCES HAD TO BE NORMAL and they are like high fiving and commiserating and red is wondering how he, who has spent his whole life as The Weirdo, has ended up the most normal person in the house.

dhmis human / normal world au thoughts

ft. red’s weird videos, arguments over youtube influencing, yellow’s metaverse-obsessed computer professor and classmate, yellow’s shitty dad, and random fun facts about these guys’ backgrounds. i’m getting silly with it

red’s weird videos

the other two know red makes weird short films but they don’t actually know what they’re like until he forgets to lock his room one day and yellow, curious, takes a peek and comes out yelling at duck that there’s bloodied viscera covered in glitter all over red’s desk. and he comes home and has to clarify to his panicking housemates that it’s not real meat and it’s for one of his videos. i know i said he wants to work on children’s tv but i mean it in like. the flapjack sense. something weird and fun and a little creepy.

even though yellow is creeped out at first he gets over it. he actually gets really into it and begs to help out. red eventually lets these two help on One project. yellow has really good ideas for like, aesthetics and the stuff that he does is really kooky and colorful. he is doing computer stuff for his major but he is also artistically inclined.

duck tries to make music for the short and it’s not, like, good, but red decides it fits the weird vibe he’s going for so he uses it anyway. duck is the least artistbrained of the trio but he is living with two artistbrained mfs so he wants to participate in like, his own mean and loud way.

also when duck finds out that red posts stuff to youtube he is FLABBERGASTED by how red could succeed as an influencer and not HIM even though he’s tried multiple times. red has to explain that he is not an influencer, he’s a weird short film maker that has a tiny patreon. duck is like well that’s silly you have to build a good parasocial relationship to succeed online. red is like i think you’ve misunderstood that term. duck is like whichever way you slice it i’m more charismatic! and red is like well it’s a good thing i don’t put my voice or face online then. duck asks why not and red responds that he has a horrible stage presence and also his mouth is all fucked up. duck is like well i’d like looking at your face and red is like. really?

and there’s a long silence where both of them wonder if something lgbt just happened in their weird conversation until duck is like anyway being an influencer is— and red is like okay we’re done talking now and leaves to go edit his vids.

yellow the computer boy ft. colin and warren

speaking of yellow’s computer stuff colin is probably, like, one of yellow’s professors at college. he’s a nice dude to hang out with but he sucks ass at teaching. he’s way too into the metaverse like bro shut up about the future of digital living and teach your class. warren is in this same class but he’s so into the metaverse shit. he keeps trying to get too friendly with yellow and yellow dissociates every time they talk.

he invites himself over to the guys’ house bc he’s pushy and yellow is not fast enough to say no. by the end of the night warren has pissed off both the other two so badly that duck is about to get into a physical altercation with him (at this point the other two have explained why crypto is bad to him so he does not bond with warren over that) and red is considering throwing some fake blood packets at him. warren tells yellow that his friends are assholes and he’s never coming over again. yellow thanks his friends profusely for this.

eventually warren gets kicked out of colin’s class. bc even the metaverse cannot make someone like an annoying man

roy comes to visit

roy rarely shows up but for once he announces that he is coming and yellow is so so so excited for the first time his dad gets to meet the new friends. he spends all day getting the other two to help him clean up and when roy arrives he tries to get him to hang out and play some computer games but all roy does is come in, look around to make sure nothing’s too broken, stare creepily/disapprovingly at the other two, and leave without saying a single word.

yellow says he’s just happy his dad was here but he’s clearly upset and hides out in his room. duck calls roy many names to try and cheer yellow up and yellow gets mad at him about it and they yell at each other and don’t speak for the rest of the night. they make up the next day tho. red ends up being the one who gets yellow to open up bc he’s generally more tactful abt his dislike of roy and also he and yellow have shitty emotionally distant family solidarity.

fun facts section:

yellow and roy look nothing alike and the other two are confused when roy shows up like wait you guys are related? this is also the strongest evidence that lesley is not his biomom because he looks nothing like her either. where did he get it from

yellow Did fall in with a cult once for like a month bc i need to parallel everything from the series. he got out though but not before getting cult married and then cult divorced. i actually think yellow has had a bunch of weird brief experiences in his life that he brings up in passing and then when the other two stare at him he learns that those aren’t just things that happen to people. how is it possible for one man to have been caught up in so many hijinks

red has a shitty emotionally distant family BUT he Is 100% the cool gay relative to his younger cousins. they’re the only ones who get along with him. at some point the three guys go to red’s family reunion and the other two decide to absolutely ruin the party when they see how rude his family is to him.

the other guys do not let red choose the movie for movie night except during spooky season bc he always brings either the weirdest experimental film you will ever see or an episode of an obscure children’s show from the 1950s that gives off massive analog horror vibes but which he finds delightful. i think your tastes are great red and i would love to watch with you

i think yellow’s name in this au is dennis bc i always liked that hc. dennis gold? gould? color puns n shit. i dunno if i wanna go fanon names for the other two. yknow, harry and robin. but either way “red” is what people call red in this universe even tho that isn’t his real name. duck is not called duck though. that would be silly.

i know i’ve humanized them before but i wanted to actually make some cleaner and colored pics of them! also human/normal world au stuff beneath the cut if you want it (even tho these humanizations are not au-exclusive. i use them wherever i want).

yellow owns the house. roy, his rich, neglectful producer dad, let him have it to get him out of his hair.

he lets the other two live with him for free because he’s lonely. which would be a red flag from anyone who wasn’t as genuinely nice as yellow. he’s SO jazzed to have new friends but the other two are staying there because they are broke as hell. eventually they all end up friends anyway.

yellow is the youngest one and still in college (roy is paying for it), and the other two are around the same age and have been graduated for a few years now. red was a film major, duck was a business major (with extremely okay grades), and yellow is studying programming and struggling. not bc he’s bad at it! he just has unmedicated adhd, but that means he’s been there for a few years longer than he thinks he should have been. it frustrates him.

even though red and duck are graduated they are ALSO struggling. red wants to work on children’s television but he is Bad at networking because he can’t seem to do social scenarios correctly. duck is trying to get some kind of job but he’s bad at adapting to new situations so he can’t hold one down. don’t worry guys you’ll get there eventually. but right now red makes weird experimental youtube shorts and duck is trying to do something online as a side hustle. maybe he has a blog or something where he posts his very dramatic and very bad opinions. for 8000 a month he will stop. he almost gets into crypto except yellow and red slowly and patiently explain why it’s bad.

“what about the teachers?” lesley is a work friend of roy’s and used to own the house until he bought it off her. she shows up from time to time just to see how things are going and she always brings one of her weirdo friends with her and it always ends in disaster. but she herself gets along with the trio okay. maybe she just brings her weirdo friends over because she thinks it’s funny. she MIGHT be yellow’s biomom but she’ll never tell.

segueing into family situations from that. yellow never knew his mom and only had roy but has been very neglected by him; roy pays for whatever he needs, but he otherwise doesn’t care very much about his son or give any kind of love. red has a family but they don’t really like him and he knows the family business would crush his soul so he’s out on his own. duck didn’t know his parents and was a foster kid who just kind of aged out of the system.

duck ended up at the same high school as red one year and they used to smoke weed together after class. try and keep up maaaaate. red does not remember this but duck thinks this makes red his best friend. it is pure coincidence that they ended up as housemates. once red remembers this he is mortified that his embarrassing teen self might have been duck’s gay awakening.

they are all neurodivergent. yellow knows he’s autistic but doesn’t know he has adhd. red knows he’s probably neurodivergent but doesn’t want to get diagnosed bc he thinks what is the point at this point. duck thinks he’s neurotypical.

yellow is bi with transmasc swag (he/him). red is nonbinary (he/they) and likes men. duck is a cis man (he/him) but he’s also extremely gay.

Duck knows (or at least has an idea) of what's going on. however, his self-preservation instincts are probably what make him unable to actually try and do anything about it, and also that out of the three, he's the most subjugated to lesley's wicked will thanks to being the only one who can be actively replaced.

still, he does his best to avoid any of them getting into situations that can be too dangerous, are directly harming them three or are off script, even if he acts as if he doesn't care:

he's the only one aware that the whole "jobs" situation is just, wrong, and out of control. of course, he acts like it's directly affecting his egotistical ass, but he notices how the environment changes red and yellow into idiotic slaves for peterson's company. also, he's the only one who snaps out of the illusion in the workplace and actively tries to do something to save yellow from his accident, accidentally helping them all escape from the corporative hell and wrapping the lesson. what's his pay for helping out his friends?: getting blinded by a pound.

in ep 3 he's the first to point out that lily and todney's ideas of family are extremely weird and arbitrary, even trying to persuade them to stop by saying the main trio is already a family and that what they sang in the family song didn't even made any sense. later on, in the house of the twins, he's the one who tries to get yellow and red back home because things feel wrong (again). his doubts, questioning and interference is what get's him kicked out of the house first.

in episode 2 he's the main target. quick mention to how he recognizes red as his best friend, because he probably remembers a variant of the fridge scene from past cycles. without duck there —who in his own way is able to talk some sense into both red and yellow, they just end up succumbing to their grief. it all ends with yellow digging him out of the grave and red creating a replica *, situation that leads to one of the ducks being killed. also, his credits song straight up predicts the teachers from the next episodes. he, just like red and yellow, recognizes the loop.

in ep 4 he's the one who saves yellow from warren. the fight was mostly for comedic effect.

in ep 5 he tries to convince red that getting out of the house is dangerous and unnecessary. yellow joins in trying to take red out of his idea. ultimately he was right: things go wrong, they end up in a dumpster **, and red's efforts show themselves as futile because lesley brings them all back. she probably loved sucking that tiny hope for freedom out of red's heart. I think duck's uneasiness also has a lot to do with ep 5 of the original yt series, like a reflection of what happened to him during that episode. he probably was nervous about dying again, now in a more painful way.

the final episode shows him as the most worried about yellow's change — it isn't only because of his superiority complex. duck probably sensed that whatever that yellow tried to do in this new state would inevitably trigger the loop that they've been living in to start over again. and it did. I think that's also why he was so hurried about bringing yellow back to normal, and why he also celebrated the book being shredded (since it was probably all made of lies, knowing that there's a force bigger than lesley and it would make a pretty messed up joke to have all of yellow's search for answers be ripped apart. it also probably helped the next loop start earlier and become easier. imagine a new loop with smart yellow guy? who knows how much trouble they would get themselves into?)

*: apparently, duck has a sort of shared consciousness/hive mind with his replacements. they share the same memories and is probably what makes them able to sense the loop and become aware of the situation they all have found themselves into. also, if he sometimes forgets things (like red and yellow), it's probably thanks to either lesley or a higher being's will, he's the puppet of the main trio that can be more easily manipulated to fit their narrative. he also has a connection to his big boy and bigger boy versions, and red does too. when yellow is taking the walk upstairs, red and him are talking about the weird blob thing that transformed into himself (stain edwards), and how they're experimenting on it. unrelated, but this can help to confirm that stain was the duck that was "killed" and then pieces of it were taken upstairs to mess with yellow's morals, too. it makes sense since it was an unnatural copy, one which had its own values and form of thinking, and probably wouldn't be as easy to control.

**: it's also possible that they never even escaped the simulation they're being kept locked in in the transport episode. when red guy's watching the fire they created to keep warm, a can of duck made out of felt appears in the fridge right behind him. apparently that "real world" is nothing more than a layer in the simulation made to discourage them and prevent them from trying to escape again, or to fool them all again if they reach that dumpster during the next loop.

Yellow and Red are both Aware in very different ways in the new DHMIS.

Red seems to remember the cycles as he did the first season, with how he says "we live in an actual NIGHTMARE" and is DESPERATE to leave the house. he also gets angry at the pattern of the show that they watch on their television. he's the one to disrupt the song to remember to go to Duck's funeral.

Yellow, while later BECOMING aware of the cycle and the creator, Lesley, is the one to break the fourth wall and ask thw audience questions as a kid's show usually would. additionally he makes note of the phone numbers. while he frequently sees his Other Self and has weird moments, he is the one to address the camera and audience directly.
