this is a bit of a ramble but my friend and i were talking about 911 the other day (specifically the whole thing with tommy, buck, and eddie) and she causally said “well tommy thinks eddie is an experienced gay man” and i was like elaborate, and basically:

tommy left buck on their date pretty much because buck was still figuring himself out and was new to all of this and tommy didn’t want to wait around for him to ‘get his shit together’ so to speak. so it becomes clear that tommy is only interested in men who he believes are a) queer and b) aware they’re queer/experienced in some way; tommy’s not someone who would go after a man romantically if he wasn’t sure they were also gay/queer.

which brings us to eddie, because let’s be so real tommy was 100% after eddie and then decided if he couldn’t have him then he’d have buck. and why would tommy go after eddie if he didn’t believe eddie was queer and experienced (“i’m your first not your last”). he even scoffed at buck when he said that eddie was straight.

it’s also why he considered him competition in the first place, because eddie wouldn’t be competition if tommy didn’t think buck had a chance in the first place. then it’d just be one sided and tommy would be more focused on buck’s feelings than eddie’s ‘pursuing’.

and the reason it was so easy for tommy to believe that he was in a competition with eddie despite literally being in a relationship with buck is because he put himself in competition with marisol. tommy was trying to win eddie over with the helicopter rides, the wrestling matches, basketball, etc. so of course it would make total sense to tommy that eddie would put himself in competition with him because that’s the exact same thing tommy did.

but tommy was convinced he was going to lose so he left buck before buck could leave him. it wasn’t until “the competition was out of the way” that tommy thought he might actually have a chance with buck.

all of this is to say that i think tommy clocked eddie and that’s why he saw him not only as an option but also as competition, meanwhile eddie is absolutely none the wiser to any of this lmfao
