Abhivyakti was a 9 member team project done as the final module completion project in Fundamentals of Visual Design. This was done to conclude all the topics covered which fall under Basic Drawing, Colour and Composition with a video showing transitions of shapes and colours. The visuals as well as music was done completely by the team members.
The team members were (in alphabetic order): 1. Aditi Sharma 2. Arvind A 3. Ashish Kaushik 4. Aswin RV 5. Dr. Madhavi Ghosh K 6. Neena P 7. Roli Dharmsaktu 8. Sangeeth K 9. Yadu Yadav
The task was to become the shapes by ourselves in order to convey the story. The colour, background, theme, etc had to be chosen within ourselves. The music part also had to be done completely by us without the use of musical instruments.

This is the screenshot of the meeting we had to ideate on the theme and story.

We used different virtual mediums to ideate and finally came to a theme to move forward.
After finalising on a direction to move on we divided ourselves into three groups story, editing and music. Groups were divided so as to make it easy for parallel processing since we had to finish the work within 3 days. Everybody contributed their part to all the groups. The name ABHIVYAKTI which means “the expression” was decided during this time.

Mime was also decided to be put in to create a continuity in the transition.
A lot of work has gone into the video as well as audio part of the project within a short span of time.
The video was all about shape transitioning showing the emotions of the shape/form and the human interaction with them. Some of us did face painting to bring the emotion. The whole background were also done by us. The audio on the other hand was a great experiment with the transition happening through ears. We tried audio panning and surrounding also to give the exact emotions of the video.
It was a whole new experience for all of us playing as a team and we could learn a lot from each other and also the project. And it was super fun!!!

Keyword Composition
This assignment was based on creating a composition with simple shapes and colours according to kewords. A 20cmx20cm boundary was taken and then a composition was created in it based on the keywords. Then with an 8cmx8cm window the composition is viewed to find different Gestalt Laws and the Design Principles.

Friendship Circle, square and triangle coming together to show friendship is very contradicting. These are 3 shapes that doesn’t fit well with each other. Here I tried to show different group of people with different views, character, attitude, social and political backgrounds, etc. mingling with each other in harmony to form a peaceful society. Today we fight each other stating the differences in us. But as shown in the image, each shape has a part of the other two in them. The co-existence makes the composition complete. Everybody is the same but in a different way.
Finding the laws

Similarity - Because of the similarity orange and red is perceived as one entity and purple is standing out as another object

Continuity - The triangle is which is not completed is being completed by our brain because of the sense of continuity

Point of Interest - The image shows a lot of colours in them leading our eyes to the black area which is at the centre and it stands out.
________________________________________________________________

Infinite The above image shows the twisted propagation towards inside to infinity just like going inside a never ending loop. Circles, rectangles and triangles are filled with yellow, red and blue colours respectively and the arrangement is such that rectangle sits inside a circle which sits inside a triangle which again sits inside another rectangle and the loop goes on. The loop twists as the orientation of the shapes changes.
Finding the Laws

Similarity - Here the groups are formed visually with the colours

Point of Interest - The focus of attention shifts towards the centre of the loop as the colour interaction to that side is very high

Continuity - Here our brain visually tries to complete the shapes and colours

Dots and Lines
This exercise was done to understand the different design principles using dots and lines alone.
A boundary 20cmx20cm was taken and using lines of 2mm thickness and 3.5cm length and dots of 5mm diameter was put in different patterns to understand the principles.
The principles are mainly as follows: 1. Pattern 2. Rhythm 3. Point of Interest 4. Balance 5. Scale and Proportion 6. Unity and Diversity

Rhythm In the above image I tried to show the rhythm of the music from the movie Koi... Mil Gaya (where Hrithik Roshan calls the alien named Jadoo) in the abstract form. The music is made with 4 notes which I have depicted using Lines and Dots. The music is sent to the space, so it is tilted to show the propagation to outer space.

Point of Interest The point of interest is the way in which we create patterns and shapes to indirectly direct the viewers eyes to a point. In a concert the whole crowd looks to the stage where the performer is performing. This above image is an abstract form of the concert happening where the performer is the dot and the line depicts the crowd looking to the stage.

Balance The lines and dots are irregularly arranged even with small tilts. If we observe the composition closely we can see that it is not at all balanced in any manner with the elements being slanting or horizontal or vertical lines and dots. Still the composition as a whole is balanced visually. This is because our brain tries to connect the shapes in the most simplest manner and the blacks fills the negative space.

Food, Music and Colour
The assignment was to think of our favourite food, associate it with a song and then colour the feeling on to a paper.
This was done to observe the association of colour, food and music. Connecting 3 senses at a time, this was an experiment to understand the way they are related to each other with our memories and emotions.
My favourite food is the “Sadya” (സദ്യ), which is basically a thali with 18 dishes consisting of pickles, khichdis, sambar, dal, etc , 3 to 4 different sweet dishes (like kheer), pappad, banana and small snacks like banana chips.

The way this dish is served is itself an art with a specific place for each dish and a specific order in serving the dishes one after the other.
The song that gets connected to me when I think of Sadya is “Shyama Sundara Kera Kedara Bhoomi” composed by AR Rahman and lyrics by late P Bhaskaran for Asianet, a television channel in Kerala, as their theme song. The song describes the very diverse yet beautiful state of Kerala
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aObgm5wQPdA
Just like the song describes the beauty of the state, Sadya is also very beautiful and evokes memories as well as emotions in me a lot.

This was a group project on the interaction of colours visually and also through audible means. Group Members : 1. Neena P 2. Jagath Narayan 3. Aswin RV
The video is divided into the colours in the colour wheel and the audio at each point corresponds to the complementary of the colour at that point of time.
This project helped me understand the way colour is perceived. Even the concept of the experiment we took was to challenge the emotions while we see and hear. The exact emotion of either the colour or the audio was not conveyed properly since it contradicts with each other at each point of time. This helped me understand that all the senses come together to create the perception of a colour. Also the result was completely the efforts of the team as a whole and it helped me grow as a team player.

Understanding Gestalt Principles
The Gestalt principles are the rules of how we perceive things. They are mainly: 1. Similarity 2. Continuity 3. Proximity 4. Symmetry 5. Closure 6. Figure-Ground
Here are photographs of some examples that I could find at my home.

Closure and Proximity This figure shows the proximity of the shapes due to which visually our eye closes the whole shape as a circle even if they are not interconnected.

Similarity In this figure we can see two bottles with pink lid and one with white. They are visually grouped according to the colour of the lid due to similarity in colour.

Continuity Some lines of the grille gets hidden as the Almirah is in front of it. Still our eyes visually completes the lines due the sense of continuity.

Symmetry and Similarity The above image is symmetric horizontally, vertically and at 45 degrees. Due to the Similarity of the colours in them, i.e. blue and white, they appear as if they are lines going diagonally.

Similarity The image shows set of paint brushes where due to the similar colours of the brushes, we tend to group them accordingly. Even the colour of the bristles helps to group them as synthetic and natural animal hair brushes.

Proximity This is an image of the arrangement with which an insect had laid eggs on the outside of a glass window in my room. The proximity plays the role of bringing them visually into a quadrilateral shape.
After the observation I could find that almost everything we see around has any of the Gestalt Principles because our brain tends to bring up a pattern to simplify the way we see things. Also almost everytime more than one principle is visible at the same time.

Colour Changing Experiment
The experiment was to find the character change of different objects and materials when the colour is changed. I took different food items and also a hand sanitizer spray bottle to try this out.

This was a fun experiment as I could find the change in colour changing the characters and also understand the way we perceive things with colours.

Books are the source of knowledge and they are the ones which gives meaningful colours in our life.
So I thought this is the best way to represent a colour wheel.
