If you haven’t made your way over to Workbar Union yet, do it! In addition to it being an awesome new co-working space, they also have a bunch of local art rotating through for you to view - including some by yours truly!
Their ribbon-cutting was this week, so they’re fully open now. Check it out!

I recently took a great workshop on adhesive pre-coated repair materials with Sarah Reidell up at Dartmouth College. The two-day event was hosted by the New England chapter of the Guild of Bookworkers and was super comprehensive. Sarah is as knowledgeable as she is organized and we had a great group of conservators from institutions and private practice - see my write-up on Flash of the Hand!

There’s almost nothing I covet and treasure more than tools when it comes to my work. Read me wax poetic about some of my favorites over in my guest post at Flash of the Hand!

Really, Really Free Events for O.P.C.!
In exploration and celebration of the issues explored in Eve Ensler's new comedy O.P.C., the American Repertory Theater welcomes you to a series of free events, including skillshares, post-show discussions, and an interactive lobby experience featuring artists from our community.
Come by Saturday, January 3rd from 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm to make link stitch bindings with upcycled materials with me! The exposed sewing of the link stitch binding opens perfectly flat, making it great for drawing or journaling. This workshop will be an engaging and enjoyable entry into the world of bookbinding!
Participation is limited, so register here!

Had a great time talking about and demonstrating bookbinding at See Art, Talk Art, Be Art at Washington Street - and there's a nice little write-up in The Somerville Times!

Check out Washington Street's ArtWeek Boston event tomorrow!
Stop by the gallery at Washington Street to meet the studio residents for an assortment of visual stimulation. Artists will be demonstrating various methods of art making, selling trinkets and seeking participants in collaborative projects. Bring a black and white negative to learn how darkroom developing works with Gretchen Ann Graham. Choose a few words and wait while a (short) poem takes shape with Anna M. Warrock. Ever wanted to be a subject of a painting? Now is your opportunity as Danielle Festa scouts for new muses for her oil paintings. See Athena Moore in action demonstrating pamphlet- stitch book binding.  The event will include several other artist stations and will be open to the public from 12-4.

Jen Bryant and Melissa Sweet's book The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus just came out - and it looks incredible! I worked with Melissa last year to create some original leather bindings and pieces to be included in her wonderful assembled collage illustrations and I couldn't be more excited to have been a part of this project! The story and illustrations are really something, so pick it up at your local bookstore or on Amazon!

I had such an incredible experience at Rare Book School this week. For a first-timer, I felt immediately welcome. Intense day-long sessions passed into receptions, group dinners, and nights on the lawn - all while carrying on the same engaging conversations. I had the good fortune of taking Jan Storm van Leeuwen's Introduction to the History of Bookbinding course and am all the better for it. He is a true font of knowledge and a world class teacher. Here's to hoping I'm back next summer!
