Trifling Moments

While preparing a custom birthday pastry cake, I realized the northeastern dessert never entered the southern market. Of course the south has wonderful decadent pastries like King cakes, cobblers and pecan pies (that’s puh-kauhn for Yankees like me). However, No one in our area knows about trifles.

It is comforting to live in a country with different cultures. We have the freedom to change the English language, make our own traditions, and everything else under the sun! It’s a Blessing because many men and women chose to protect our Land. Whether or not we admit it, as Americans, we are thankful  for their service.

The customer was overjoyed and the trifle birthday cake was a success. More importantly, our sweet (cheesy pun intended) customer was brave enough to share a life struggle. I was honored to listen, share, and Love. A “trifling moment” became a memorable Blessing. Once again, I was reminded why the bakery exists.

Life is hard for everyone. Some people’s lives are tougher than others. We all need to take the time to Love and listen.

Sadly most small business owners only care about money. In fact, I have a colleague who only wants to discuss business. Also, I know a business owner who ignores his “friends” but becomes kind and caring when they visit his store.

Maybe ugly pride is another reason why businesses fail.

Yes- Money makes the world go around, but Love does too.

If we would look at each other before the cash register and our wallets, we could stop the virus of hate. Last year NPR announced the anniversary of the destruction of the Berlin wall. Germany’s symbol of hatred lasted for thirty years. Now they are celebrating. We need to tear down our walls of money and make trifling moments. If we did, there would be more celebrations than hate crime memorials.

Yes- We are a for profit business. However, the profits are used to help others in need and share our Joy. When you make a purchase, we give our contact information in case you need our help.

Everyone Can Do Something

A friend called to discuss her new business project. I was happy to hear the plan was moving forward. She did not ask about the bakery, but since there was a moment of silence in the conversation, I started talking about it. She immediately jumped to incorrect conclusions. I tried to explain the dangers of loving money more than people, but she just didn’t get it.

My anger turned into sadness for my friend. She is in business to have more money for herself. We are in business to make money to help others who need it.

It was then I realized Boo-Shaw Bakery Inc. officially started in 2012, but in reality, it began in 1992. I was 20 years old and did not have enough money to pay for college tuition because of the strict laws in Pittsburgh, PA. I had an A average when they kicked me out of the college dormitory and became homeless. Thankfully I was Blessed to find an apartment within a few months. However, several times, I was thankful for the roof over my head because nothing was in my refrigerator.

Also, I spent a lot of time in and out of emergency rooms because of a systemic illness and somehow dared to survive an assault by sending the attacker to prison.

Today, I am a wife of a retired Air Force Veteran, a national Mayo Clinic case study, survivor of head trauma, and have a professional degree with certifications We are not extraordinarily wealthy, but we are Blessed enough to pay it forward.

Yes – Money is necessary.

Yes – We have to take care of ourselves before caring for others.

However – After we take care of ourselves, we must help those in need.

This world is in trouble. So let’s face it together and do something. Boo-Shaw Bakery Inc. will be around long after its founders are gone. The strategic goal is to care for others. Therefore a portion of every sale will go to a non-profit organization. What will you do?

The Bamboozled Game

Last year our pastry Cookies Vanilla Nut and Banana Pudding won the North Florida Fair baking contest. It was nice to know our comfort food desserts are the best way to unwind and self indulge.

Last week I signed up for the 2020 Florida State Fair baking contest. I listed our Cashew Crumbles sweetened with maple syrup, gluten-free Orange Muffins made with fine-ground white cornmeal, and our Heavenly Chocolate Pastries made with Hershey Cocoa.

After I signed up, I noticed the last page of the entry form stated, “All recipes become the property of the Florida State Fair, including publication rights.”

I was horrified to see this awful clause. Why would a prosperous entity take a baker’s original recipe in exchange for a ribbon? What’s even worse is why someone would give their baking recipe away if it is good enough to sell?

State Fairs are not the only ones stealing from us. Many mega giants conduct baking competitions, pay the inventor a chump change cash award, and make millions selling the baker’s creation.

Whatever happened to the Golden Rule? Mega corporations like Pillsbury should at least give the contest winner a royalty percentage of the revenue made from the recipe.

This is another instance of the have and have-not society. The most significant bias in today’s world is between the rich and the poor.

At some point, people lose their ethical values and start loving the all mighty dollar. As a result, the less fortunate suffer because of it. I am not suggesting socialism. I just think this world would be a better place if there were more people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

Our company is still a small business, but we will grow it to employ those in need by changing the 10-5 Rule to the 10-5 Do unto others… Rule. Reach out to us if you would like to connect 🙂

A few months ago we were invited to give an elevator pitch.  I stood in front of a crowded room and tried to share our story in ninety seconds. Everyone was attentive. Some smiled too. I tried to tell everyone the main strategic goal is to employ others who are disabled and in need of a decent paycheck. It makes my blood boil when I hear about full time employees needing government assistance to make ends meet.

The results of my speech were surprising. The feedback was encouraging, constructive, and cruel. I exercised my Faith and did my best. However, it felt like a failure. I questioned whether or not to continue to build a brand for others to succeed. I’m a national medical case study. I could be spending extra time enjoying my hobby.

Needless to say, I fell into a state of depression.                   

One morning, I heard on NPR that it’s the fortieth anniversary of “The Muppet Movie.” They played a part of the iconic song Rainbow Connection by Kermit the frog. I began to smile, and my frustration melted away.

      The Muppets were as beloved as much as Looney Tunes in the 70s. I couldn’t remember all of the lyrics, but I did remember the Hope in that beautiful song. So I went to Google to find it.

As I read the lyrics, I realized I have a lot of Rainbow Connections. Most people have only a few. I’m sure it’s because negative people have said, “They’re only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide” (Kermit, 1979).

  I choose to believe Kermit because I know they are wrong too.

My hearts desires “were heard and answered” (Kermit, 1979).

      So I WILL pay my Blessing forward by showing others to Trust in the Creator of the “morning star” because “look what it’s done so far” (Kermit, 1979).

     If you have friends, family, food to eat, a place to live, and a job……you have at least five Rainbow Connections. My Faith was revitalized. After reading this……I Hope yours is too.

It will take a little longer, but I will build our brand because it’s a Rainbow Connection for the dreamers……and me.

Don't Drink Poison

People often ask why our desserts are so unique. I do not know if it’s because they are family recipes or because I cannot taste any of them.  As a Beethoven in the bakery world, I strive to find precisely the right balance of flavor and texture to create an extraordinary blissful experience.  Our research and development team assist me by providing constructive feedback. 

The team effort results in extraordinary  pastries even foodies can’t resist.

People always ask for samples of our decadent desserts. Normally it results in new customers and supportive friends. Sadly sometimes it results in very strange behavior from at least one person. He (or She) gets angry when they hear the wonderful encouraging complements. 

He (or She) will admit our snacks are delicious.  However, they will start to compare our pastries to their own recipes or tell me “it needs a little more flavor” as if their palate is the only one on the planet.  In fact, some were so jealous they actually  baked their dessert, gave it to our new customers, and asked them to compare whose is better. 

At first this bothered me. Only small business owners know what it’s like to overcome  failures, make sacrifices, and deal with frustrations to grow a brand. We are simply trying to create jobs for others. Plus we try to be a company that is Kind and Patient by not bombarding people with pushy advertisements just to make more money. 

Why do we put others down to feel good about ourselves?

Why can’t we be genuinely happy for other people?

Eventually my frustration turned into empathy. Clearly the jealous bakers are lacking Joy in their lives.

No one is perfect. However….. when we feel the need to compare or critique someone’s efforts, I think we should all exercise some Self-Control by finding out what is missing in our own lives.

Life is too short to drink the poison of jealousy.

Internet Bullies or Genuine Jerks

I started posting to gain exposure for the business. It is relatively easy because running a small business brings Joyful, stressful, chaotic, and even maddening situations. 

   Many people have Blessed us with their replies. So I decided to continue blogging to encourage others because it’s a struggle to accomplish something Good. 

Unfortunately , For every encouraging post there are at least sixty  malicious posts. Hackers work very hard  trying to infect our website. Some have positive comments with pornographic URLs. Others are very long paragraphs with spam URLs and fake email addresses.

Thankfully WP Engine does not automatically publish  blog replies.

In addition,  BrightCloud  provides a free URL and IP lookup tool. Anyone can copy and paste  URLs in their search engine to find out if a website is safe. Plus FreeEmailValidator.com verifies email addresses. I’ve spent countless hours authenticating URLs and email addresses because it’s necessary to publish the Loving replies.

    This life is short.  Why would someone waste time trying to hurt others? I barely have enough time to do my laundry.

Evildoers have been around since the beginning of time. However, I wonder if  the internet (which started as the ARPANET) has created a desensitized world. It happens all of the time. A wonderful invention is eventually  used for evil. The internet has brought us closer ……………………..and cruel people can hurt strangers for fun.

  No one has to see the side effects of their hateful actions anymore.

    I just don’t understand. We all share one need……..the desire to be Loved. I think more people would practice the Golden Rule if they couldn’t hide behind a computer monitor…..don’t you?

Can I call 9-1-1 too?

Public radio recently reported a nine year old called 911 because her parents were trying to make her clean the bedroom.  I couldn’t help understanding her frustration.  Sure this  is minor for adults, but it’s not minor for a child. She had a stressful situation. Why not call 9-1-1?

I wanted to call someone because of  our most recent small business problem.  We’ve been using WordPress for years.  WP Engine (our host) has been a Blessing. However, in order for the business to grow, the website must move to Big Commerce.  This is a huge problem because moving will take a lot of time and effort to accomplish.

 I didn’t want to do it. There are SO many things small business owners have to do. Why would I create more work for myself?

When I finished whining and complaining like a nine year old girl, I created an account in Big Commerce. I couldn’t find reasons to keep our WordPress site. 🙁

Big Commerce has Google Shopping, better drop shipping integrations, and other features like Printful.

Thanks to Printful, we will soon be launching our Eat Some, Wear Some collection.

                                                                                                         I still want to keep the comfort of WordPress. Plus I’m sure the nine year old  wants  her room the way she likes it.

Nevertheless, we will both become better people by exercising  Self Control.  This will be the last post until our Big Commerce store is ready.

I guess it doesn’t matter if a person is nine or ninety. We only grow to the threshold of our discomfort.  It’s the True  way to experience the  Goodness in life.

Why do you do it?

A friend and I were talking about her new business plan. I wanted to help with her brainstorming session and possibly get some business tips. She purchased property to create an outdoor eating area. Several independent food trailers will supply delicious lunches to customers.  

I was on board with the idea until she wanted to charge the small business owners an unreasonable monthly fee. I asked why would she  charge so much.

Her response was, “I’m in business to make money.”

It made me wonder how many other businesses are taking advantage of their customers for the love of money.  

I know it takes money to run a successful business. Unfortunately It takes money to do almost everything. However, is it worth stepping on others for money?

I did some soul searching to find out why we have a small business. We know our business is FOR helping former inmates, disabled veterans, the homeless and others who need a second chance. However, it was necessary for me to find out WHY we started one.

Initially we had to use a contract manufacturer. It was difficult, but rewarding because we still call Fairlight Bakery (now Bake Works) our friends.

 When a commercial kitchen opened in our area we were finally able to make our own products. There were a lot of hard days at YourProKitchen in Panama City, but the bond we made with Jeff Lawrence was priceless.

Now we have our own private bakery. There are  countless stories of Loving, Kind, and Joyful moments with many people despite the difficulties of business.

  I’ll admit there are many times we’ve considered giving up. Looking back, I now see giving up is not an option. There are too many people who do not realize Loving others is important. No one is perfect. If we would think about reasons why we do things, a simple random act of Kindness could brighten someone’s day. 

Sooner or later eventually we’ll need that Kindness too.  For us, it’s all about relationships.  I hope it is for you too.

WHY???????

A few years ago we upgraded from a shared commercial kitchen with gas to our own bakery with electric. It took several months of failed attempts to make our products in our new electric convection ovens.  We went through the process of “getting to know your oven” with different pans, temperatures, times, and even a science engineer. For two years, our gourmet cookies were great. However, we still had to scrap some because they were too big or too small to package. 

I was frustrated, but I was told all bakeries have to throw away a percentage of their products. So we accepted the setbacks.

Always All Natural Ingredients

Guess what we learned several weeks ago? We’ve been using the wrong ovens. We were not using Imperial ovens which are designed specifically for baking.

Wouldn’t it be great if “Back to the Future” was possible?

Trying to stay positive, I experimented while waiting for our new oven to arrive.

Maybe we could start selling pancakes 🙁

Why do we have to fail in order to succeed? Life is short. Why is the 80/20 principle true?

Mr. Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

Mr. Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”

Mr. C.S. Lewis said, “Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.”

There are many other encouraging words about embracing failure. However, there’s one I didn’t see. We say, “Failures make you a humbled success and grateful for everyone who helped get you there.” Don’t give up my fellow small business owners. We’re cheering for you all…….even the gourmet gift shops  🙂

What about this? What about that?

Although we have sugar free and gluten friendly all natural desserts, I wanted to make a new healthier snack. 

I tried to blend oats, berries, honey, and other ingredients. My goal was to create a great tasting healthy treat that doesn’t have deceiving ingredients like rice syrup. 

I gave the snack to part our Research and Development team……….…it was awful.

Feeling defeated but choosing not to give up, I tweaked the recipe and tried again. As our team tried the second recipe, it felt like I was on the show Chopped.

The second recipe was better, but needed improvements too. 

During this effort, it was interesting to discover the vast differences in tastes. Some people could not taste flavors. Some wanted the snack to be crispy, but others disagreed.  As we  were brainstorming improvement possibilities, there was also a debate whether or not coconut has a mint aftertaste. 

  I wanted to give up. However, I realized we have not seen this type of snack in stores. We were developing something new.

Version three was packed with flavor……but.…..a few people made more minor suggestions.

As the desire of banging my head against a wall increased, I noticed something.

Coming Sooner or Later

If trivial things like taste buds are so different, wouldn’t our personalities be equally as different? Wouldn’t our perceptions be immensely different too?

It also makes me wonder if we could stop the hate in this world just by being Kind, Good, Gentle, and Patient to others who seem different.

I think it’s worth a try…..don’t you?
