The emotionally intense experience of the first Tattoo.

Do you believe too, that the firsts are always special – first bicycle, first crush, first thrilling experience, first trip with friends, first book you read, first love, first major accomplishment, first Proposal, first promotion, first time you hear “I love you” from a special person, first flight experience, first kiss, first job, first break-up, first relationship, the first “We are having a baby” reactions, first time you hear ‘mama’ or ‘dada’ in a baby voice……. First Tattoo!

Yes, this blog post is about being tattooed for the first time and the emotional roller-coaster ride of it.

This was the day when I checked one more thing from my “bucket list.”

So, today I shall be sharing a few good to know things before getting inked for the first time. Let’s get started.

What would you like to get tattooed? – In my case, I already had a design in mind. Actually, I have made all the tattoo ideas in my personal notebook that I would like to get on my body. This is for the reason that whatever you decide to get today, would be on your body for the rest of your life. (I wanted to get a boomerang.)

And not just what, also decide the size of the tattoo. How big the tattoo would you like to have? Not forgetting the fact that the bigger the tattoo, the higher the amount of time and money you would have to spend on it. (I wanted my first tattoo to be a small one, of about 3-4 inches; as I did not know how much manageable the pain would be for me.)

Also, before settling on your tattoo design ask Why? Why would you like to get that particular tattoo? You should be hundred percent sure that this is not just a Tattoo-lust phase. You should have a firm reason for it to be on your body forever i.e., you must believe in that idea.

I chose Boomerang as I am an ardent believer of the law of Karma –

You get back from something whatever you have put into it.

Be independent (You do not really need anyone to play boomerang with)

Whatever you give to the society, good or bad, is what you receive.

I was sure that I wanted to get a boomerang for my first tattoo.

Tattoo Studio – An important decision for getting a tattoo is to choose the tattoo artist or the tattoo studio. Either you trust the tattoo studio and let them decide the artist for you, who will be best in your kind of tattoos. Or research enough to be confident that you chose the best tattoo artist for a forever thing on your body.

I had come to know about Iron Buzz Studios from one of the tattoo artist I had been following for a long time. Before scheduling an appointment I checked the complete website of the studio. I was captivated by their work because they customize all. I was a little nervous and excited at the same time.

However, when I arrived at the studio, my nervousness was put to rest. The atmosphere of the studio was welcoming and comfortable. Although, I found them to be very expensive, yet they are also one of the best in India so I was willing to pay a little extra from my savings account to get something really special to me.

Placement of the tattoo – This is a very important decision. Just like the design, I had already decided that I would like to get this tattoo on my right hand, between the forefinger and thumb area; so whenever I outstretch my hand for a firm handshake, the person kind of guesses my Life philosophy. (Yes, I had put in that much idea for a 3-inches sticker on my body.)

The member of the studio informed me that tattoo on the hand, below the wrist area is not that everlasting. The ink may fade away after sometime. So, we spent quite half an hour to decide the placement for my tattoo.

You should not hesitate about taking a lot of time deciding your tattoo area, not only because placement decides the pain, but also because it is going to be on your body for the rest of your life, so you might as well ask yourself again. Knowing this, I chose to put mine on my right inner elbow area. (Massi’s idea, Thank-you)

(If you want be cautious or have second thoughts about getting that tattoo permanently, ask an artistic friend of yours, who is good with face painting or colors to paint your tattoo where you would want to have it)

The pre-tattoo nervousness – If you are getting it for the first time, undoubtedly you would get nervous. I was nervous to have something drawn on my body which is going to stay there forever. While they were setting up the lights, the inks, the machine and the needles, I had lots of thoughts running in my mind.

Is this happening in reality? – Should I get it, maybe I should not? –  Why not? – I had been planning it for years. – Is my tattoo design good? Or maybe I should rethink about it? – Would I ever get a government job? (As if I was ever going to get any!) – What if people laugh at my tattoo? Is it childish like me? Or is too complicated to understand? Well, then it is going to be good conversation starter. (HaHa) – What if somebody comes to me with an urgent need of blood? I would not be able to help them. Oh no, I would not be able to serve the sole purpose of being in a Universal Donor blood group! (Rashee, you are 22 yrs old and you could not donate blood even for once in your life, thanks to the layers of fat flesh covering your nerves) – Hey, how would everybody react? Would my mom welcome me with chappals in her hands?

And then I heard, ‘Are you ready?’ All I could give as an answer was my nervous smile.

I am glad I had Massi with me all the time for support (and to click pictures, of course.)

The excitement of getting a tattoo for the first time overpowers your nervousness and you reply in affirmative ignoring the pain you are going to suffer.

All right, let’s do this.

Talking about pain, it is NOT as painful as you think it is. Whenever a tattoo-virgin person sees a tattoo, they always think about the pain the person must’ve gone through. Whenever I saw a person with tattoo, I always asked them how much did it hurt? The ratio of Very much and not much had always been 50:50. It is so, because the pain is not limited to the capability of bearing the pain but also depends on the size and placement of the tattoo. It hurts more at near rib cage area, on your chest, at your spine or your inner arm. So I am assuming, the fleshier the area is, the less pain you’d bear. Yes during the shading part, you may groan a bit.

When I heard the machine running, I thought I was going to scream in pain as I had heard from my tattooed friends that it hurts a lot. It does not hurt you “a lot”. Yes, you read it correct. The pain of needle piercing your skin continuously is absolutely bearable. If you have had your limbs broken, your foot sprained, your head banged, menstruation cramps, delivered a baby, punched someone in face; believe me you would survive getting a tattoo. If you have longed to get a tattoo for years, but could not, because of the presumption how much it is going to hurt; go and get a tattoo.

The first look – When I saw the artist drawing a masterpiece on my canvas body, you know what I felt? My mom is going to welcome me home with shoes in her hands. Hehe.

Dream coming true would be dramatic to say but it was. You’d feel the way you felt the first time you held your newborn baby in hand, or like witnessing the sunset at the place you had always wanted to go, or like launching your start-up. Yes, not exaggerating, it was overwhelming for me.

This is the reason why I mentioned that the firsts are always special. You always remember it. Because you had either only dreamt of it or wasn’t expecting it to happen ever. The idea of getting a tattoo (and then actually getting it) gave me adrenaline rush. It slightly empowered me.

7. The aftercare – Do not mess up the after tattoo care of it. Although the tattooed area is secured by a tape, yet you got to take a little care of it. C’mon … pamper that little baby of yours by not stressing it out with all the stretching for about 2-3 days, and moisturize it enough after taking the tape off.

8. And then starts ‘The Reveal’ phase, where you cannot stop showing your tattoo to almost everyone you know. The big Facebook announcement, Instagram posts, WhatsApp shares, Snapchat stories, etc., to everybody in your friends-list.
