ahh i do think hawkes presence definitely adds something interesting to the dynamic ! i cant say i personally ever considered it through any gender or sexuality-specific lens as there isn't any indication that queerness would be perceived shameful through andrastianism specifically and none of the sexuality codexes mention free marches either. also, i do live in my own little world where sebastian isn't straight locked lmao, but even if he is - there isn't anything in the canon to imply that he *wasn't* straight in the past and gave it up for religious reasons. i do understand why some people draw that conclusion or find that an interesting aspect to explore, as it's kind of unavoidable to associate andrastianism with catholicism. i just. don't personally care for it, i guess. guilt relating to sexuality and eroticism in general is definitely a part of it, maybe just not orientation-specific. i think. for me, anyway.

ahhh this isnt even as much a response to op, i just felt the need to point out how lost some people get in the catholicism of it all sometimes. it all makes it that much more evil that sebastian is unnecessarily straight locked bwahaha

anyway! many thoughts. much guilt to be had for sebanders or honestly just sebastian as a character on his own too. just maybe not in this sense, i think?

You enabled me, so here goes.

What gets me about sebhanders and sebmhanders specifically is that Sebastian is the femHawke exclusive romance, yet, since the dialogue and narrative are the same for male and femHawke, it's implied that Sebastian feels just as strongly about male Hawke but doesn't allow himself to act on these feelings.

And this is so interesting to me considering the theme of repentance for past sins yet succumbing to them in the end is very much part of his character arc; and the theme of history repeating itself is also very much part of the overall story.

So Sebastian is attracted to the male Hawke, but believes this attraction is sinful. He becomes attached to Elthina because of the purity he imagines she possesses—which we know is not true—and he finds solace with her and in the Chantry.

And considering how attached he is to the idea of purity and to this very flawed woman, and considering how quick he is to anger, I think it's pretty clear that the abyss of his past life still calls to him. He's so desperate to maintain control over his life. SO FUCKING DESPERATE.

Now, enter Anders, the literal antithesis of everything Sebastian clings to.

Anders is a mage. Anders is messy. Anders is angry. Anders is selfish. Anders commits blasphemy. Anders doesn't feel bad about sleeping with women AND MEN. But most importantly, Anders sleeps with Hawke, and everyone knows about it.

Sebastian knows about it and can only watch this terrible, blasphemous, selfish, angry, undeserving person get what Sebastian himself can't have, because only Sebastian's sinful past self could have pursued a same-sex relationship with Hawke. New Sebastian can only hide from this in Elthina's holy skirts.

AND THEN ANDERS KILLS HER.

And all hell breaks loose.

Oh, Sebastian's obsession with "your precious Anders" is so good. He invades Kirkwall because of it. He invades the city months after the Chantry explosion, even though Anders most definitely left already, just because it's the only way he can cope with the hate he feels. It's like he's possessed by vengeance, and there's something so sexual about it.

He tried to save Hawke from this sinful relationship, but now he's full-on villain mode, obsessed with killing them both, and I'm not saying that gay threesome could've fixed him or made him feel better, but god. he needs it.

I also think that @ayesopod captures this dynamic —only alluding to Hawke's presence in the narrative, mind you— perfectly.

Sebastian's struggle with his gay attraction towards Hawke and with handers relationship, his subsequent sexualization and villainization of Anders as the ultimate sinner, and the resulting desire he has for Anders are so important to me. It's such a beautiful pipeline. They destroyed him. They destroyed the thin veneer of purity and all the pretense, so he's going to destroy them in return.
