Ab ode to optometry
Sometimes I like to look
Through the lens of my eyes
To see the world as it is
My brain blurs the edges
The lines on my forehead crease
But sometimes
The clarity of my glasses
Brings me peace
The world in full clarity
The colours are lucid
My eyes are awake
I see all the tiny lines
From time to time
That gets tiring
So I remove my eyeglasses
And see the world
As it is to my mind.

Death by consumption
Isn't it funny,
That the more automated I become
The more machines labor for me,
My body becomes idle
The more time I have
On my hands,
In my hands,
To stare at the content
The algorithms feed me.

RIP: Jacqueline de Jong, artist, author and editor of The Situationist Times. A movement of anti-capitalists, de Jong and her peers produced challenging, violent and erotic images and participated in the student protest movements of the 1960s. Her work remained steadfastly figurative even when abstract expressionism was valorised. Often drawing on monstrous figures, it never shied from political themes. Recently, she depicted the refugee crisis and the situation in Ukraine through her work Disasters (2023), critiquing the concept of "freedom" under European bureaucracy.
"Political events are more often the direct trigger for my work. The interplay of topicality, eroticism and irony; these are things that keep reappearing." De Jong.

A letter to my 30 year old self.. .
Hi, its me, your past self, the you who is twenty-eight, you're outside today- slowly getting a sunburn no doubt, and you're working, still.
I hope this letter finds you in a good place, and perhaps "happy" or "happy-ish'-- i think happy-ish might be good enough.
Do you write much these days? I wonder if you still have the time to pitch new ideas and to write thins for the paper, this is something that gives you a thrill.
I wonder how you are doing with your health, selfishly-- I've gotten this far down the letter and I haven't even asked about others.
How are your friends in the UK? I hope you kept in touch. You love them even though you're far away. Make sure you make the effort. If you haven't for a while—well, this is your reminder.
How is Miles? I hope he's doing better. He's having a hard time, and you're worried about him—I'm sure you remember. Keep calling him, I guess. Make sure you let him know you are proud of him. I hope he got a diagnosis or some relief.
I wonder how Mum and Dad are doing, too. Maybe Gran is gone now? I think we will lose her soon. We worry about her, but we know we're lucky she's been around this long. She is someone you love purely. I know it will hurt when she goes. It will be okay, and I hope that you are okay with it.
I love you, know that-- it feels awkward to say, but I am proud, you've come a long way- I hope the PhD is going well-- remember now, as you're in the throes that you did wholeheartedly want it, you will get there- you didn't think your masters would ever end, but hey, here we are. Make sure you find some love, I hope you're still dating, I hope you still have hope. Give 2026 a wave for me, I wonder what the world is like where you are. I guess all I hope for right now is consistency- just things to not get worse, maybe they are? I hope not.
Listen to some music, btw, you don't do that enough--and for gods sake, eat some cake sometimes. You are allowed.
Yours,
You, but with less wrinkles.
