snow was the person pushing the initial rule change to allow two victors (*fight me*). well aware that he would change it at the end.
but it was him. the more i get to know snow, it seems to be clearer that he was the one to suggest the change. all he wants is to prove his thesis. that anyone -- children, the righteous, lovers -- will turn on others when it comes down to it. when their lives are on the line. especially covey women. and now he has the perfect opportunity. a boy with blonde curls, professing his love. all for a girl who is a whisper of a songbird from long ago. one who blushes at him. who holds his hands. who kisses his cheek. and now snow has his chance. a chance to finally prove things right. to prove his entire existence. to see the face of another boy's face as a covey woman betrays them. snow is more than happy to agree to a suggestion. he's already getting his popcorn out.

the crazy thing about the “weight of the betrayal” Coriolanus does to Sejanus is it doesn’t mean much more than a plot point and stepping stone to Coriolanus and it would’ve destroyed Sejanus.

WE GOT AN ANSWER THANK YOU CLERK CARMINE!!!!
Why’d I lowkey clock that?
The districts at least, because it gets him “harassed by peacekeepers, fired from jobs, arrested, even” which is harsher than I expected but good on Suzanne Collins for that tbh. sorry clerk carmine.
The Question of Everyone’s mind:
Does Snow Support Gay Rights? Does The Capitol? What is Their Attitude?
I believe that they support it, but that it’s looked down upon so people wouldn’t flaunt a gay partner the same way they would a straight one, but there aren’t any laws or biases against this. In the districts however, I don’t think it’d be as supportive.
To find all the layers to this, we’re gonna have to go through how the capitol views children. Obviously, expendable, but they want more children. Can’t do that with gay people, which is why they look down on it, but it’s not so many gay people that they should outlaw it and because individual capitol people like to be ignorant (abt possible baby shortage if there’s a lot of gays), they like to believe that it won’t affect them (it doesn’t) so they ignore it if it’s their friends or family. Which is why it isn’t at all outlawed but it’s also not flaunted.
However, if it got to too many of the population, the capitol/snow would probably outlaw it due to the need for children to, yk, continue as a species.
You may be asking yourself why children are important to the capitol, and it’s not a why but more of a how do we know they are? Peeta’s speech.
Peeta talks about how they’re all going to eradicate each other, how the DISTRICTS need to cease fire against the CAPITOL to prevent a dangerously high loss of life. This was in his speech, by the capitol.
Feel like it’s worth mentioning that Panem was formed from America, not exactly known for their treatment of gay people, or trans people, but I think the capitol would see trans people very differently (more on that later).
In the districts, Katniss talks about the expectation to have children. How many people do, how it’s the norm despite the terrible conditions those children will have to live in, and how even victors from other districts choose to have children (knowing their chances of getting reaped are high).
I for sure think the capitol pushes child-having ideals on the district children at an early age, both for the hunger games and again the expanse of Panem. Snow is exactly the type of guy to constantly be worried about us killing off each other (never conquesting outside of Panem, his talk about wasting life).
The districts grow up with the idea that you need to have children, and that you need them even. Gale talks about it, even though he’d never be a good father and doesn’t want them. Katniss knows she’ll have to have them with Peeta (as a victor) and I wonder if that’s not as a role model to the capitol and districts, too. “Look, these victors are having kids, you need to too!” or something along those lines, which is exactly the kind of thing he would do.
The only (99% sure only) openly gay character in the hunger games series is Barb Azure, an outsider. Barb wasn’t raised with that same mindset, and the gal down the road she’s seeing may know this. Lucy Gray mentions that district 12 always looks at them with distrust, and Barb not wanting kids by being gay could be a reason.
Anywho, in conclusion the districts don’t like it but won’t kill you and the capitol tolerates it and is fine with it but it isn’t encouraged.
Post inspired by this anon I got on a different account but wanted to answer here.

Now that that’s cleared up, their view on trans people.
Honestly I don’t think they’d treat them any different, and seeing how common cosmetic surgeries are in the capitol it’d be easy to get top or bottom surgery too. Probably hormones as well.
The districts probably wouldn’t care, but I think they’d make you use your agab due to the readings, but after they’d mostly be supportive.

crazy how Coriolanus doubted Lucy Gray’s decision of trust being more important than love and then proved her right because the second trust was gone so was his love for her.
and then he warned Haymitch about Lenore dove’s trustworthiness BECAUSE he loved her.

Countdown to Sunrise on the Reaping (SotR) book release.
What's the burning questions about Haymitch you hope is answered in this book?
What are your predictions about Katniss' family or ancestry in SotR?
Were you shocked about Haymitch's life story in the chapter preview that's been released?
Any other thought about SotR?
Thank you.
@curiousnonny
Ooooh I can’t wait to find out!!!
I think we’ll find out just how much of a rebel he was before his games/during and how much he hated the capital, which will be great.
I predict that it’ll be CONFIRMED Katniss is related to the Covey and we’ll learn a bit more about her parents.
I did not read the chapter preview.
No more thoughts other than excitement! I was a bit disappointed to see it wasn’t going to be from a career’s perspective but I trust Suzanne to make it fantastic no matter what.
#ignore I’m posting this after the first chapter#ballad of my ramblings#bosas#the hunger games#sotr#sotr spoilers#thg sotr

One of the most interesting reasons on why Coriolanus and Lucy Gray never would’ve worked out is their differences in love languages…let me continue without sounding corny.
Coriolanus showed love (and has been shown love) his entire life through acts of service. His father fought for their country and for them, Tigris was the provider of the family, always serving Coriolanus and the grandma’am, and because he didn’t have money Coriolanus did things for other people—he was the one who did the group project, he was the one who helped that teacher, he was accustomed to doing things for other people (even when it wasn’t motivated by love, but for power) unconsciously.
With Lucy Gray however, words of affirmation (and just words in general) are how she’s loved and been shown love her entire life. The covey sings their love, she channels her love into songs, and she makes her love known by TELLING people about it.
Both of their love languages have been used as lies to the other, though.
Coriolanus has had multiple people leave him after telling him they’d stay (his mother, father). He’s grown up in a world where most words ARE lies/tools for deception. That’s how HE uses them himself. To him, all words can be deceiving, so he doesn’t trust them.
With Lucy Gray, acts aren’t exactly deceiving, only dangerous, so she doesn’t trust those. Billy Taupe played with them every night but he still went off with Mayfair. Jessup guarded her for weeks but he still tried to attack her (not his fault of course, but still something to consider). Yes, they used words to lie to her too, but it was their actions that ended badly for them, that were faked.
So of course Coriolanus and Lucy Gray can’t completely unconsciously trust each other. Everything about the way the other one loves seems fake to them. Coriolanus showed he loved Lucy Gray by coming to 12 with her, Lucy Gray showed she loved him through the song written, but that was how THEY loved, what they were used to, not the other way around.
And we know how important trust is…
So, it’s only predictable that it crumbled. Coriolanus’ act of running away with her was for selfish means, not a show of his love, and he was ready to throw it all away. Lucy Gray tricked him and lied about getting the katniss. When their own languages of love became foreign, there wasn’t any left at all in the relationship. Coriolanus leaves, Lucy Gray disappears, and the world carries on.
#one of the reasons it’s so important to acknowledge that Coriolanus DID love Lucy gray#bosas#ballad of my ramblings#ballad of songbirds and snakes#the hunger games#coriolanus snow#hunger games#lucy gray baird#coriolanus loved lucy gray#coriolanus x lucy gray

this is such a great addition and analysis, THANK YOU! never feel bad about “hijacking” one of my posts I love it when that happens!!
your point about Coriolanus seeing love as a weakness is so important because you’re exactly right, that’s the reason he messed up w the rule change. he only used love to control, but he couldn’t understand it completely so he couldn’t control the outcomes completely and now he’s defeated.
again thank you, this was so great to read!!
the crazy thing about the hunger games is if they’d never rescinded the rule about 2 tributes during the game then the rebellion might not have happened because of it…
like seriously, the only reason Peeta & Katniss were the face of the rebellion was because they REBELLED against the games. if they’d just let both of them win, then even though there’d still be danger, Haymitch surely would’ve coached them to just be overflowing with gratitude for the capital and blah blah blah.
plus, both Peeta and Katniss wouldn’t have hated the capital so much after, even if they did still have to keep up the love story. I’d bet they’d be on better terms because they wouldn’t have all that pressure.
like Coriolanus is smart but he’s also great at shooting himself in the foot.
the next games, just make it clear it was a one-time thing and like hope for the best and that everyone forgets it because it’s a quarter quell.
its possible I’m way off here but I do think it’s at least worth considering.

It really is endearing how Peeta is fleshed out and humanized more during Catching Fire, but it’s also the book where he’s peak hearthrob because Katniss falls so hard for him.
Compare the first and second book:
The Hunger Games
He’s introduced as a character that did something selfless who Katniss is really grateful to
Other than the conversation about his mom and staying true to himself (which I would argue is two of his most emotionally open points in the books) his interactions with Katniss are very amiable
He saves Katniss from having to share her story about Lavinia
The intent of his plan with the Careers was to protect Katniss and though it backfired a bit he mostly executed his plan to perfection and achieved his goal in the way he expected
Catching Fire
The book opens up with him being icy towards Katniss
He gets really angry to the point of throwing a lamp during the Victory Tour after he sees a man get shot
Gets withdrawn and cold during the three months of coaching for the Quell
Peeta even admits that his plan for the Quell seems like a long shot with the way Snow wants Katniss dead
Clashes with Katniss slightly more relative to their last games when he makes of fun of her for being pure and doesn’t gravitate towards the same victors she does because he’s being super pragmatic
There’s a subtext of Peeta being a little more ruthless than Katniss here for a bit because she doesn’t want to befriend people she may have to kill. Peeta doesn’t want to kill anyone either but he’s still willing to befriend people he plans to kill later
His pregnancy announcement does cause a lot of trouble but in the end it doesn’t achieve his goal of stopping the games
He fully fails to convince Katniss to not attempt to give up her life for him during the Quell
And all of these inklings of flaws are justified, he’s a traumatized seventeen year old boy who doesn’t even have a supportive family, but it does provide a different perspective from the first book. In the first book when Katniss’s view of the world is smaller, and it’s just them in D12 and the Games Peeta has this image as a kind merchant boy from a mean family who succeeds in protecting Katniss. Catching Fire makes the world so much bigger while at the same time giving Katniss a closer view of Peeta. Now the president is after them and they’re having to mitigate damage to protect people they care about. They’re losing any control they had, culminating in them being put in a death match again. Now the kind boy from a mean family who succeeds in protecting Katniss is still very kind but gets angry and withdrawn sometimes, is from a mean family that makes him think there’s no need for him, and has plans that are brilliant but do fail sometimes because he’s just a seventeen year old kid trying his best.
But from the narration of Catching Fire you wouldn’t know that because Katniss falls more in love with every page she’s with him.
